I want to use Linux as my desktop on my job but I need to be careful cause they
are a big windows shop. I thought it would be easier and less trouble
(especially if the so-called pc people come by) to just install Mandrake 7.2
Win4Lnx and then when I knwo they are comming I can jsut boot into windows real
quick.
I run WIndowsNT which has the bootup option screen and the FAT filesystem. Can
I install Win4Lnx on this system with out messing up the NT bootup options
screen?

Well, it's obviously not debian, since it's stable. Must be your power
supply or ventilator.

No, debian stable is stable. That's what it means. I run many machines
all perfectly up to date with stable.

This is obviously a EBCK. You just have to find it.

Both of which can run on a 286. :-) But the "SX" suggests a 386SX.

Small Linux (http://www.superant.com/smalllinux/) claims to be
runnable in 2MB, I think.

Maybe. Try asking on comp.os.minix and see what they think.

True, but as the OP said he would be newbie and sendmail should run on his system
(preinstalled MTA on most distros)
it should be a lot easier for him, to change this one line and reload sendmail, than
figuring
out how to build a new sendmail.cf with m4.
Anyway, his distro should have some tool to set this and make it even easier, but I
don't know about mandrake,
as I use SuSE which comes with yast, that allows easy sendmail setup (ie. if you're
on dialup and want to set sendmail
expensive) of course this setup tool want let you do much with sendmail, but for
most home users it's quite enough...

I put together a linux box at work here, it has the DPT smartRaid VI.. It
also has 2G of RAM on it.. The install was great, simple kernel patch,
compile and install.. The RAID works great IF I tell linux that there is
only 900M RAM.. I'm not sure exactly how high I can go, but at 960M, the
RAID initialization fails and /dev/sdc is not there..
Any ideas on why this happens and how to get back over a gig of RAM?

I have a P120 with a 1.4 Gig Drive runnning Caldera Open Linux 2.4. If
I reboot the machine it hangs when it gets to the part entitled "Auto
Mount Daemon." It can take up to 4 minutes before it gets past this
step. This does not happen upon subsequent reboots - if they are
performed within a few minutes of the first rebbot.
Why does this take so long to come up - could it indicate a problem with
my Hard Drive?
Thank you

If you leave the sendmail port open it does, yes.
If you only use sendmail for sending mails externally and distributing local
mail, then also yes. (Even with the SMTP port closed to external connection
attempts)
The only advice ANYONE can give you after you've been cracked is...
backup important files such as /etc and /home.
Wipe the hard disk, and reinstall.

Hi!
I just set up a new machine from scratch with a 2.4.1 kernel and devfs.
Everything's just fine, only the cdrom doesn't work. The drive is a
perfectly normal atapi device connected to the primary ide as slave (master
is the hard disc). /proc shows me valid information about it. Now if I only
could mount it...
I tried some symlinking but it didn't work. The devfs faq doesn't contain
much information either, save for praising itself.

In general ATA devices are supported by recent kernels. And PCI is no sweat

Hey, Windows came with my computer, but I don't regard it as an
advantage. <g> I agree that usually sendmail in your distribution's
default configuration will do what you want without too much trouble. The
problems arise when you want to start changing things. A guy sophisticated
enough to set up his own multi-drop mail server will probably want to do that.
Of course, he could probably grok sendmail well enough to do what he wants,
but why go through the extra pain? (Not to mention sendmail's rotten security
record, although it _has_ gotten better as of late.)

OK, then...what does 'ls -l plusnode.gif' say? What does

VIA AC97 gave me a hard time under linux. Yes, it is true that ALSA
works, but if you are interested in games (the quake series) you are out

the "mmap" features quake needs, or did anyone manage to get sound in

Actually, it's looking for glib-config SCRIPT (i think it's a script anyways)
executable. It NEEDS to be in your path. You might end up needing gtk-config and
esd-config and many others, depending on what libs it needs.
1) Make sure glib-config is in path
2) Make sure you do: export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$LD_LIBRARY_PATH:/usr/local/lib (or
