Actually, I did ^w-d, and saw the syntax highlight, and, while that's
not so bad, I guess I'm still a bit old-school. :) And, since I can't
yet figure out how to hack ~/.exrc and/or ~/.vimrc, I'll just "alias"
it in my ~/.cshrc. Of course, that doesn't work when you ":!vi file"
from within vi. :)

BTW, I'm running Slackware 7.1.

in a text, how can I have some of the output be different colors. Like
ls --color=always puts out color text. But on a text file (ex: /etc/motd ),
how can I have colored text. Also, in a script, how can I put out colored
text. I know there are some type of hidden charactors, but what are they?
Thanks in advance.

Another question. I am building my own little distribution for my box, and
how do I add a little message right before the login screen? Thanks.

I'd say that word processor vs. typesetting program is *the* key issue
for most of the people I know who love one of LaTeX/Word and hate the
other. I'd disagree about this being due primarily to the difference
in quality, but rather to the difference in how one thinks about text.

In a typesetting program, you're forced to think in terms of the
structure of your document (this is a chapter heading; this is a
paragraph; this is a list). In a word processor, you *can* think
about document structure -- using style sheets -- but it takes
discipline to do this consistently and most users prefer to "format by
finger-painting" (I'll make this large and bold; I'll press <Enter>
twice after this; I'll type increasing numbers before each of these).
This brings me to my next point:

> Factor 2: ease of use.

It's easier to get started with a word processor and easier to dash
off quick, throwaway documents. With a typesetting program, it's
easier to make global, structural changes. For example, if you decide
to change the formatting of all of the chapter headings in your
document, LaTeX knows what a chapter heading is; Word does not --
unless you use style sheets, in which case the ability to dash off
quick documents goes away.

Once you start writing large documents, a word processor's initial
easy-to-use appeal goes away. You end up navigating through deeper
and deeper menu structures; you have to learn how to write, modify,
and extend style sheets; you may even find yourself having to write
code (in, say, Visual Basic). Is that still so easy? A typesetting
program takes a little longer to learn initially, but once you
understand the basic concepts, they carry through from beginner's work
through the most complicated document you'll ever write.

This is very true. I once used the equation editor in PowerPoint
(same as in Word) and swore I'd never use it again, it involved so
much effort relative to LaTeX (or anything in the TeX family).

I'd add that people who prefer word processors tend not to be
perfectionists in terms of their document's output quality. They
don't see why typesetting guys (like me) cringe when we see improperly
indented paragraphs, lists, etc. or simple inline equations like
"f(x+y)" in which the parentheses and plus sign are italicized along
with the variables. Gack! It all looks equally good to them. Of
course, it is *possible* to do this right in a word processor, but it
requires more time and effort than most users are willing to exert.

I'm happy to report that this advice worked for me too. I can finally
upgrade to 4.0.3. Horay! I'm running a low-end desktop machine with the
SiS 530 card. Shouldn't someone report this to the XFree86 people for
inclusion in a FAQ or just to bug fix the sis driver? Who do we contact?

BTW still can't get XVideo working properly. xvinfo reports:
X-Video Extension version 2.2
screen #0
 no adaptors present

Does it just not work with the sis 530?

After looking around, I can't find anybody who is working on the SiS
drivers. I wonder how much C skill it requires to work on the current
drivers.

I have got slackware working to a reasonable level now, and the rest of what
I want to do involves the internet.

However, I can't seem to get connected. I am trying to use the Gnome PPP
dialler utility supplied and every time I try to connect it simply informs
me that the pppd daemon died unexpectedly. Same applies when trying to pull
the ppp interface up through other utilities (namely the ppp status applet
for the panel). Calling /usr/sbin/pppd as root gets me the normal garbage
printed to stdout.

I was wondering what could be wrong. I tried to use wvdial, but I can't find
it installed...

How does this affect whether you can upgrade to 4.0.3 or not?

I'm asking because I have a SiS 630 card which someone else managed to make
work for me by recompiling the kernel in Mandrake 8.0. Now I've installed Red
Hat 7.1 using the kernel he comiled for me. I also try to use my XF86Config-4
file but when I startx it uses XFree86 version 3.3.6a and it wont work.

When I write XFree86 -version it says version 4.0.3.

Do you have any suggestions how I solve this problem.

Thanks in advance

Subject: Enabling /dev/dsp for RW perms during telnet session
Date: Thu, 14 Jun 2001 18:02:18 GMT

I have Mandrake 8.0 installed on a small machine, and I want to use it as a
remote MP3 player. That is, I'm telnetting into it via an old laptop and
running MP3Blaster at the console.

If I log in as root, MP3Blaster is able to find /dev/dsp and use it. If I
log in as "mp3" (which is a user I created and added to the audio group), it
doesn't work. If I log into the system locally as "mp3" and telnet in as
"mp3", it works.

After a while of wrangling, I finally figured out how to make it work the
way I wanted it to - I had to chmod a+rw /dev/dsp. This worked great until
the machine had to be rebooted. Upon reboot, the permissions for /dev/dsp
were returned to their old crw------- permissions.

So, what I would like to do is find a way to permanently assign permissions
to /dev/dsp so that it can always be used by any users. Since this is on a
closed LAN and I'm the only one using it, security isn't really an issue.

Any help/info on this would be great. I've done a few groups.google
searches on this topic and turned up some answers, but none that were
detailed.

Thanks!

Did you set up the ppp stuff properly? See man pppd.

Well, before, I could only get 3.3.6 to work. 4.x had lots of visual
debris before I altered the config file with a couple options (see
earlier in this thread).

You need to make sure that the symlink /etc/X11/X points to the right
version of XFree. Under Mandrake, this pointed to
/usr/X11R6/bin/XF86_SVGA for 3.3.6 and now points to
/usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86 now that I'm using 4.0.3. It's probably the same
or similar for Red Hat.

The config file XF86Config-4 should be picked up automatically when you
run the new 4.x version.
