Date: Sat, 17 Mar 2001 16:12:00 GMT
Anyone have an idea of what a process name enclosed in [] (i.e. square
brackets) means on the output of a ps -ef command.
O/S is RetHat 6.2 - command is: /bin/ps -ef
As in:
root 2 1 0 Feb25 ? 00:00:00 [kflushd]
root 3 1 0 Feb25 ? 00:00:01 [kupdate]
root 4 1 0 Feb25 ? 00:00:00 [kpiod]
root 5 1 0 Feb25 ? 00:00:00 [kswapd]
root 6 1 0 Feb25 ? 00:00:00 [mdrecoveryd]
Answer is worth a couple of bonus points in my Linux class for the
first correct response.
Any help will be greatly appreciated...

Is there something strange about that? Do you EXPECT telnet (the clear
text, unencrypted, reference utility of tcp terminal sessions) to be
installed and running on a default install?

Install telnetd. Think about enabling it. Don't use it (you are clearly NOT
an administrator). When you find root logins over telnet are disabled,
don't post again. Man securettys. Install sshd.

Welcome to the world of distributions run amok. Redhat was changing things
so much that I quit using it. While they were going for GUI based config
tools, they changed the format of the normal files, moved them around, or
worse, eliminated them, to the point that edit based config doesn't work.
Then the GUI tools don't do everything and left me hanging with no way to
do many of the things I did the "normal" way.
You're running into the same thing. Have a talk with yourself and find out
how you want to manage things on your own computer. Once you have that
figured out, then you can decide if Redhat is still right for you, or if
you want something that only another distribution or system can give you.
If you can't figure out what you do want, then I guess you have to try some
of the choices and see. But don't pay any attention to the people who say
you need to do things the same way everyone else does; there is no on thing
that everyone else does because as you can see there are lots of different
distributions, and they are different.

No.
}Can I, in other

}the master boot record in the first 1024 cylinders?
Yes.
Here was the problem: I couldn't get the Debian kernel and drivers to
install on my circa 1992 i486 notebook computer with 20 megs of ram and
impossible to upgrade BIOS. The Debian chicken-pecking-at-the-keyboard
installation program ran fine until it came time to install the kernel
and drivers. The installer would accept and read all the disks; the HD
access light would come on: I could *hear* the heads moving. But when
the installer flipped to the "checking the state of your system" prober
to determine what the next default step should be, it stayed at
"Install Kernel and Drivers." Repeating that step produced an error:
"error writing to temp file: Success." Which is about as cryptic as you
can get.
I suspected the HD was the culprit, because of its honking big size
compared to what the BIOS was prepared to handle. I flipped to some of
the alternate consoles and saw error messages about *being out of room*
to write suchandsuch a file.
Here's what I did to solve the problem:
I erased all the partitions on the disk; changed the units to cylinders
so I could get right up to 1024; made the first partition about 950
cylinders; changed units back to meg, made the swap about 40 meg; made
the rest one big partition. This was pretty much a stab in the dark
based on the Hard Disk Howto's mention of the 1024-cylinder problem.
The Debian Installer had no further problems with the kernal and
drivers, nor the base system.
Thanks to all who contributed.

Nice summary. I agree wholeheartedly with all that, of course! RH
indeed changed things so that it became easier for programs to mess with
the system, and harder by far for humans! Lots of different tiny little
config files is great for updaters and installers and package
managers, because they can't edit! But humans edit very well. So
RH made their distro hard for humans to manage .. sysadmins either
ripped out their guis or worked around them when necessary - rarely
could one work with them. Sigh.

On linux kernel 2.2.17, i have this constant error when i run mgen or drec,
"ifconfig: unknown option -e"
apparently there's no such option in linux... i don't know what effect it
has...
Has anyone solved this problem or should i just ignore? I am not sure if the

imap stream tcp nowait root /usr/local/sbin/imapd imapd
pop3s stream tcp nowait root /usr/local/sbin/ipop3d ipop3d
imaps stream tcp nowait root /usr/local/sbin/imapd imapd
Then I created the certificates.
/usr/local/ssl/bin/openssl req -new -x509 -nodes -days 356 -out

Hi!
I have a problem with masquerading with my suse distripution. Ususally there
are some modules like ip_masq_ftp, but I don't have those modules. Does the
2.4 kernel not need those modules? How can I start masqerading? (the line:

And I'm not able to start masquerading with the Suse-firewall. When I'm
enabling the Firewall (START_FW=yes) my internet does not work any more
because linux doesn't find the network interface cards.
I thank you for your help.

Do you mean:
"Programs swapped out to disk will be shown without command line
arguments, and unless the c option is given, in brackets."
I took this to mean that the "c" option needed to be specified in
brackets...guess I was a bit too literal...
Thanks for giving me a different way to look at it.

this is not your question, but firewalling changed again with the 2.4 kernels.
I could not get the original SuSE 2.4 to work, but a downloaded 2.4.2 was fine.
I only have one NIC and no modem though - it is an intranet server.
