I work on Compaqs all the time (unfortunately) and you ain't gonna get that
modem working under Linux. the entire Presario line, including desktops, use
something similar to but still worse than a WinModem. If you have to replace the
modem in one of these machine you MUST use the quick restore cd (wipe and reload
the original software) just to get an OE replace functional. This little tidbit
came directly from Compaq tech support for authorized technicians. Your best bet
is to disablt the modem (removing it is not an option as it is several parts
inside your laptop) and get a PC card modem like the Meghertz Xjack series or
USR sportster series. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but Compaq still uses
many pieces of proprietary equipment.

Has anybody gotten acm-4.7-8 to work? I included acm-4.7-7 with my
RedHat 5.1 installation and couldn't get it to work, so I tried 4.7-8
and got the same message as before:

Subject: Stuck creating boot floppy for system restore
Date: Mon, 28 Dec 1998 06:21:22 GMT
I have created a boot floppy with a kernel that loads and recognizes all
desired system devices (in particular, the scsi card through which the
jaz-disk backups need to come for a complete system restore). Since I'd like
to keep this floppy as simple as possible (its only purpose being for
emergency restores), I was hoping to be able to fit enough of a root partition
on it to be able to run cpio, but . . .
After hitting return to the prompt for inserting root floppy, it grinds away
for a second or two, then comes to a complete stop with the only option a
<ctrl> <alt <del>.
I must not have all the necessary files, so I was wondering if anyone knows
what might be missing, or how I can find out. The Bootdisk-Howto helped me
get this far, but it goes into all sorts of complicated procedures on how to
compress the file system, which I'd rather avoid, if at all possible. Anyway,
even with compression, it would be nice to know what a bare minimum bootable
root file system would have to contain. There are a whole lot of things
started up by init on the basic Debian linux install, not all of which may be
necessary for a simple standalone system whose only purpose is to run cpio and
shut down. It would also be nice to know of a reduced list of special files
to keep in /dev. I have pared down both /dev and the /etc/rcn.d directories
considerably, but it's a tedious task and almost impossible without knowing
for sure whether something is going to be critical for the boot up sequence.
So far I've made sure that I have the following:
/sbin/init
/sbin/swpon
/sbin/swapoff
/bin/mount
/bin/umount
/usr/bin/setserial
/usr/bin/find
/usr/sbin/cpio
/etc/kbd/console.map.gz
and I've taken everything out of init.d, rc0.d, rc1.d, rc2.d and rc6.d which
does not deal the above (rc3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9 have been completely emptied).
Anybody see some "red flags" in this scenario? And really, the best would be
if I could just find out what others surely must have already perfected in the
area of simple emergency restore procedures involving nothing but a single
minimally configured floppy.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

This is a level or two below what your looking for, but try the free d/l
of Sybase at www.calderasystems.com
You're going to have to develop the GUI, but its got the database
features your looking for and its free for commercial use on linux (if i
read the license properly)

Well, if you can stand to deal with a <shudder> text setup tool, pppsetup
works fine. It might require an edit so that it doesn't stop after the
first screen, but since this version is newer than the one I used, maybe
that's been fixed.

I spent tons of time working on getting connected until I found out that my
ISP used PAP. Worked immediately after I said YES instead of NO.
Yeah, it ought to be easier. So should a lot of other stuff. Life goes
on.

Are you running at a 24-bit color depth? If so, that's the cause --
Netscape's got a bug that causes this exact behavior at 24bpp. Try
reducing your color depth to 16, or increasing it to 32, and it'll be OK
again. If you're desperate to not do this, either put up with it or get
Accelerated-X, which (IIRC) allows you to run programs in different color
depths. I can't promise this will fix the problem with Netscape, but in
principle it should, if I understand the claim correctly.

To everybody who read my previous message with the subject "Am I stupid or
am I stupid" and who experienced the same program. it's 2 a.m. right now and
I finally connected to my ISP. Thrilled? O.K., I still don't know why I
couldn't connect with the scrips, but I downloaded a program called WVdial
from http://worldvisions.ca/wvdial/ and wow!!! it worked. The program is
very simple to use and doesn't seem to do anything fancy, but it works. So,
try it. I wonder what command line the program issued. Best of luck.
P.S. I still want my scripts to work, 'cause otherwise I don't have the
sweet taste of victory.

Subject: modprobe: can't locate module net-pf-5
Date: Mon, 28 Dec 1998 07:36:04 GMT
After compiling my own 2.0.36 kernel under RH5.2, I get
error messages in var/log/messages (as well as while booting)
Dec 28 02:03:00 kitty modprobe: can't locate module net-pf-5
Dec 28 02:03:06 kitty modprobe: can't locate module net-pf-4
This is added to var/log/messages when starting ppp. The ppp
connection however does work. (I have compiled ppp into the kernel,
i.e. not as a module). One thing I noticed is that the file
'/boot/module-info' is still the one shipped with the default RH5.2
kernel, i.e. hasn't been updated when recompiling the kernel.
Any suggestions??
Thanks !!!

Kernel version 2.0.35 supports LS-120 ide drives...the kernel will have to
be compiled to support it. After that, automount the drive just like any
ide hard disk (with disk in drive). Or, mount by hand. Use ext2 file-
system. Mine works great. Don't care for the grinding noises they make,

Subject: pppd permissions
Date: Mon, 28 Dec 1998 07:52:31 GMT
After upgrading from RH5.0 to 5.2, I'm having trouble with
my dial-in perimissions for non-root users - executing my
dial-in script 'imci', I'm getting the error message
kitty[/boot]19:imci
/usr/sbin/pppd: using the name option requires root privilege
kitty[/boot]20:
This happens although I've executed
chmod a+s imci
so everything should be executed with root permissions....(this
worked under RH5.0). Any suggestions?
Thanks a lot
Tom

Well that's your problem right there with RedHat. Just as you can
tune Slackware's install by picking and choosing package sets, so can
you (and should you) do with RedHat.
I used & learned Linux on Slackware for two years. Slackware had one
huge disadvantage: the lack of sophisticated package management. I
switched to Debian which gives me the best of both worlds. And Debian
is filled with sharp touches that give it a nice integrated feel. I
suggest you test Debian out Ruben
