If you have a CD that carries differences between "user data" and Error
Correction Codes / Error Detection Codes then you can't duplicate it perfectly
because the firmware of your CD-driver will correct errors automatically
(That's why PlayStation CDs "couldn't" be copied. Basically you can' write
what you want onto a CD but 280 bytes for each sector must be a function of
2048-byte-data. It is 4 bytes for error detection and 276 for correction.
A perfect duplication is possible, though, with cdrdao and generic-mmc-raw
driver which has a narrow choice for hardware support.
I got this information from the CD-Writing-Howto - Italian version by Giuseppe
Corbelli.

I had a similar problem and just figured out how to fix it. Assuming you
have root access, log in as root and use "userdel -r <user>" to delete
youself. Then use "useradd -d <dir> -m <user>" and "passwd <user>" to add
yourself again. The next time you log in and try netscape, you'll have a
fresh copy waiting for you. Worked when I screwed something up and every
time I opened the address book netscape crashed.

You don't understand. I am talking about bash. Run bash with -x set.
I.e. put "set -x" in the scripts or on the bash command line, as in
"bash -x ~/.bash_profile". Yes, it most certainly does do something
very visible! That's the point. Read the man page again.

Subject: Best E-mail Client?
Date: Wed, 21 Mar 2001 22:47:11 +1200

Folks....

I have been using Netscape for mail on Linux for a long time because it
supports HTML and Javascript and graphics.

But it has also lost some of my mail...and the address book doesn't work
worth squat. I can put entries in there, but the TO: line never finds my
nicknames...so I have to manually enter the addresses anyway (v4.76).

I also have PINE set up....and the default mailer with RH 7.0....but
they all lack HTML, javascript and graphics.

Is there a good mail client? I use Lotus Notes for my work e-mail via
VMWare in a Windows 98 VM. I would prefer to use a Linux mail program
for my personal, non-work mail.

Opera doesn't have a mailer or I'd try that.........the browser is very
good...though it doesn't support plugins or most other essential
stuff....so Netscape is still No 1.

Help! This is bugging me.

What he suggested are insertions into "initialisation string" (sort of config string)
of the modem and are usually in the modem manual booklet.

You don't want to use an 486 to encode mp3, the CPU is simply to slow (even
my P-133 is not much fun). But you could use a 486 to serve mp3-files via
an internal LAN (I do this at home) or as a ftp-server (our old university
ftp-server ran on a 486 with an external SCSI-disk-array and it was really
fast...)

Don't use a 486 to rip cd's an encode them to mp3.

> I have install disks for RedHat 6.2
If you wan't to use your 486 as a linux-server, I'd take a 'light' linux
distribution like slackware or debian. At home I use debian on a 486 with
40Mhz, 16 MB RAM, EISA-SCSI-Controller, 9GB HD-Space and it works fine as
a router/fileserver/mailserver/newsserver

Why do you need this stuff? Do you want to catch the latest trojans?

Use PDF-Documents instead. ps2pdf is a very good tool for that.

Try StarOffice 5.2. It can handle HTML-Mails, though I didn't check the

Indeed Linux CAN boot from a logical drive in an extended partition. The
only restriction was that the kernel reside within the first 1024
cylinders of one of the first 2 IDE disks, and I believe even that
restriction no longer applies to modern motherboards and new versions of
bootloaders --

One word of warning concerning Star Office.....!!!!

The installer blows bat chunks... Download the binary file - switch to
root - enable all the permissions - and then install by the user account
you will be using it from...Else you'll find out the hard way that it
isn't a very friendly installer...

I see what you are saying. cdrecord needs a character device. I am using
a stock scsi kernel but... I'll try that, the rest is my thinking through
this whole deal... =) Thank you for the help and I'll keep you posted.

Andy

cat /proc/devices shows sr and sd under block devices, but sg isn't under
character devices, hmm... I installed the default scsi kernel rather than
the bare.i in the Slackware setup though...

I thought that was strange too that I didn't see aic7xxx in
lsmod or cat /proc/modules. But now thinking about it, I shouldn't be
using modules since it is a scsi kernel. I have no problems booting
off the cdrom, using the devices at all, except with cdrecord. Reading
Jorg Schilling's documentation, I suspect he would tell me that I have a
firmware bug, shouldn't use a buggy GNU make, anything except that his
software doesn't work with SCSI/Linux very well =) BTW, no problems in
WIN98 or WIN2KPRO. Anyway, the only reason ide-scsi loaded though is that
the script had modprobe ide-scsi, or something equivalent (and i left the
ide part of the script in there...) I Just rebooted.

yggdrasil:~# lsmod
Module Size Used by
iBCS 135456 0

parport 6724 1 [lp parport_pc]

I had to put modprobe sg in one of my startup scripts, otherwise it (or
scsi_mod) wouldn't load automatically. According to the README, sg.o is
/needed/ for cdrecord. Everything works fine w/o sg though, e.g. never
any problems using the devices.

LOL, don't try cat /proc/kcore (unless you can read heiroglyphics (spell
it?) =)
