How about a perl program:
#!/usr/bin/perl
# fixcase.pl file1 file2 ...
for (@ARGV){
$ucn = $_;
tr/A-Z/a-z/;
rename($ucn,$_);
}
After typing the above in an editor, save, make executable, run:
./fixcase.pl FILE*TXT
will change all the uppercase filenames matching to lower case.

There are pros and cons to all of the solutions posted here.
1. Loadlin is another boot loader. To the best of my knowledge it will not
let you run Windows without rebooting.
2. VMWare is the only one which will allow you to run Windows and Linux
without reinstalling one or the other. Some people say it is too slow and
too expensive. It also takes alot of resources.
3. Win4lin installs in you Linux system and you will not be able to run
you old Windows apps without reinstalling them also. It does not access
your current Windows file system. It actually allows the new install to
run in an ext2 file system. You will not have access to most of you
peripherals. However, you may find it will meet your needs.
Hope this was helpful,

I don't think LaTeX (or any other mark-up language) is well
suited for doing things like magazine or newspaper layout where
there is a very irregular structure and you want to manually

What facility??? Having a slave NIS server? That's what I'm saying that

Why waste a process? Use your shell's expanding capability:
# cd /usr
# ls */vi # to find vi for instance
This may miss dot files but for quick and dirty searching, it's faster than
find. Of course, if you have a very large number of files underneath your
current directory, it may fail because there's not enough space to hold the
current command line (* is expanded into all files on the fly by the shell,
of course).

It also won't find files named "vi" in the current directory or
in directories more than one level deep: it won't find ./vi or
./foo/bar/vi or ./a/b/c/vi. The "find" command will.

I'm not exactly sure what you are looking for, but basically, to my
knowledge, there is no authentication involved when doing port forwarding,
i.e. it is not possible to restrict forwarding to specific users. This is
due to the way port forwarding works, it looks only at the IP addresses and
ports -- remember that TCP/IP (the protocol) does not in itself carry any
information about the user of a packet.
If the users are on different machines and if you know the IP addresses of
these machines, it is possible to allow or restrict packets based on this
information with ipchains/iptables rules.
You may be looking for a (non-transparent) proxy instead. Such a proxy can
authenticate a user before giving access to a resource and maybe you should
try that avenue instead.

Hello!
My subject says it all:
How to add one's own bookmarks??
I can't find anything which would allow for doing that in realplayer
for linux.
While Realplayer under windows had that since the beginning (at least
since the very early versions I knew), there is still nothing like
that under linux. What version is it now? version 8 or so, I just
wonder...
Well, I know, one can write scripts to launch realplayer with some
specific URL, but still I would find it much more comfortable to just
be able to select my bookmarks from a menu *inside the running
realplayer and to add my own as well.
Any ideas? How do you manage your realplaye bookmarks?

Hi there
I have tried installing OMS (a DVD player) ... I downloaded the tar file,
untarred it in a directory using my normal username (ie no root). Then I
changed to root and tried to install it using the instructions provided
(the basic configure, make, make install) ... when I typed ./configure, it
started doing its configuration then came up with the following few last
lines before terminating ...
checking for glib-config... no
checking for GLIB - version >= 1.2.5... no
*** The glib-config script installed by GLIB could not be found
*** If GLIB was installed in PREFIX, make sure PREFIX/bin is in
*** your path, or set the GLIB_CONFIG environment variable to the

configure: error: Cannot find GLIB: Is glib-config in path?
I've got a full Mandrake 7.2 installation (latest one, with latest kernel
and x windows). I tried to download the GLIB mentioned ... I did, installed
it and everything and still gave me that error. HOWEVER ... when I'm my
normal username and i type glib-config ... it runs it! But when im root, it
doesnt ... and cant install OMS using my normal username. And I get this
quite a lot too ... when I install a package, I dont seem to find it ...
and sometimes other programs depend on them. but nyways ... hope 'll get
help.

Hello,
don't know about such an explanation, but you could check it out, or even better
let your students find a way to find all files belonging to one group and
understand from the result?
You could do this with one short line in bash Ie.:
for g in `awk 'BEGIN {FS=":"};{if (! ($1 ~ /root/)) print $1 }' /etc/group`; do
find / * -group $g -ls >> group.results ; done;
This may take some time, check the group.results file if it's done, I left out
files
that are set GID root, as many files belong to root...
Of course this needs to be run as root, lets see if your students can work
something
like this out...:-)
Good luck

Can any one give me some advice on what partitions to set up and the size
they should be? From reading the info on the web, there seems to be lots of
conflicting information, but so far I plan to set up the following,
/ 200mb
/usr 850mb
/var 50mb
/boot 10
/home 320
Swap 64mb
My main concern is that the /home partition is not the correct size. The
book I am using says that you do not need this partition, but a lot of the
stuff on the web says that it is worth setting up and that it should be "set
according to your needs." As I am new to this I do not know what my needs
will be!
I intend to run Linux on a stand-alone lap-top, single user. I have 64mb
memory and 1.5gb hard-disk.

I would love to see this 'forensic' software they speak of. They claim your

Also at the cost they are charging its almost becoming cheaper to buy a new HD,
