hello,

I'm trying to execute a java app with giveconsole (executing once, when xdm
is launched)
The problem is : it is executed as root (no problem with that) but without
any environment variable (here's the problem ...)
when i do a /opt/jdk117/bin/i686/green_threads/java resident &

I get an error : java: error in loading shared libraries libjava.so:
cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

any idea ?
maybe using the environment variable of user 'sales' ?
How can i do that ?

thanks,

Subject: Serial port tapping (DosEmu)
Date: Mon, 26 Mar 2001 11:40:20 +0200

Hi all,

I like to know, if I make a named pipe, then tell dosemu to use it as a
serial line, how can I prevent dosemu from reading its own input ? Or
better, how do I prevent a writer to the pipe to read its own input ? I have
some code and my principals seem to work, that is, you can build such a pipe
and use it as a serial line, the data I receive is usefull. But there is one
problem. After the writing process writes, it has to sleep so linux can
schedule the other side.. but sometimes I miss a byte or two, probably
because the other side didn't get to the reading and then the writer reads
and unfortunately reads its own input...

What do I want? I have a dos program which writes to a serial port and
ofcourse expects some data back as confirmation. Now I want to tap off those
serial lines and write back the appropriate bytes (by telling dosemu to use
my named pipe as a serial line). Most of the time this goes allright, but
sometimes some bytes are missing(or better: misread) and the program fails.
(most probably due to scheduling since failures are not reproducable and
irregular)

Now I am not a great linux programmer, so any help would be appriechated. I
created the named pipe with 'mknod p' perhaps there is a standard pipe that
prevents the writer from reading its own input? Or perhaps it is a matter of
some status bits. Or perhaps it can't work since dosemu prevents it ? Or
perhaps there is a better approach...... maybe If I write a device driver
with a special device... (just like a pipe) ?? or perhaps the latter has
allready been done and I just don't know it ??

any help please..

to configure your network you can use "netcfg" command under root id,
you will see in interface what is your network configuration (you must
have at least two interfaces :eth0 and lo).

Thanks everyone
I was refering to path as in $PATH
Using Red Hat
And the winning response is
/etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit

When creating the tar file, just add the z option. This will automatically
compress the file with gzip. Then , to decompress it, add the same z option
(tar xvfz file.tar).

To uninstall cron: rpm -e crond
to install it again, mount the Red Hat CD-ROM, go to /cd_dir/RedHat/RPMS/
and run rpm -Uvh crond-xxx.i386.rpm (where xxx is the version number)

PD:
You should upgrade your distribution. Red Hat 7.0 is avaliable since long
time ago.

You can use gzip with the z switch tar has (Ie. tar -cvzf test.tar.gz /path_to/)
or use bzip2 for even better compression (Ie. tar -cvIf test.tar.bz2 /path_to/).

check the manpages for more info:
man tar
man gzip
man gunzip
man bzip2
man bunzip2

Hello.

How can I set up a news conference which can be used by, for example,
Windows Outlook? The server is already connected to the internet
(www.compaqconfigurator.com) , and the news server has already been
installed.

If important, the server Linux installed is Cobalt Linux 6.0

Thank you for your help

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi

Just wanted to compile glibc 2.2.2 but I run into problems. make stops
with the message:

execv: Permission denied
path/to/source/build/sunrpc/rpcgen: C preprocessor failed with exit code
1
make[2]: *** [path/to/source/build/sunrpc/xbootparam_prot.stmp] Error 1

[and some more about leaving directories and errors making this stuff,
but it's on an other computer without floppy or network. Don't ask me
how I get the software on this machine :) ]

I did check the FAQ but there was nothing about 'preprocessor', 'execv'
  nor 'rpcgen'.
I did check some Glibc-HOWTO, same result.
I did check some some GCC-HOWTO, same result (there is a reference to
atoi() and atol(), but this was of no help to me).

Now I'm stuck.

Any help out there?
Maybe some pointer to some other faq or newsgroup, if I'm wrong here?

Thanks,
Andreas

I'm not sure if I understood what you mean, a real news feed will cost some
money, if you only want to make some ng available, I would suggest using leafnode
to send/receive news from you ISP news server.

Hi!

I am using the automounter (autofs-4.0.0pre7-87) on a Suse 7.0 system to automatically
mount some directories. After the specified timeout I see some message in
/var/log/messages
===========
Mar 26 14:41:57 xxxxxxx automount[2120]: running expiration on path
/server/xxx/.mountpoint/xxx
Mar 26 14:41:57 xxxxxxx automount[2120]: expired /server/xxx/.mountpoint/xxx

But the shares are not unmounted. I get that messages every 3 minutes (timeout) until
I manually unmount them.

Any ideas where to start looking? Thanks in advance,

You can check to see if linux has recognized your card by typing "ipconfig".
This will display loopback, and ethernet connections. Also, you can use
"dmesg|more" to see the boot up sequence and see if it list any eth0 lines.

I read your message and the replies to it - and have to agree you - even
more: for a linux beginner who uses a machine only for one person it is
_completely overkill_ to have more than _one_ partition (+swap).
Dont think "server" - think "workstation"!
He will use this machine alone. So why does he need a /usr, /var, .....
partition???
Especially on such a small harddisk it will happen for sure, that one of
his partition is full while on others there is still plenty of room.

For single user machines I cant see any reason for more than two partitions
(root and swap). When he has gained some experience later on and want to
setup a _real_ machine he can take a look on his machine and find out how
many space is used by each directory and then do it the "right way".

I have to say that all my workstations (all single user) have still only
two partitions - only the servers are done the "right way".

greetings,
Martin

I started to post only masquerading portion of the script, but thought the
firewalling portion might give you some ideas about other ways to use iptables.

If you want to check what you have "visible" to the outside world,

I like your masq setup, more succint than mine.
