mgetty will definitely work, once you have set it up correctly.
Did you read through the extensive mgetty documentation?
Try "info mgetty".

Hint: Since you're using a nullmodem cable, mgetty won't do
anything unless you have started it with the "DIRECT" option.

You burned the disks incorrectly. You should have used the "burn from
image" command to create a bootable CD from the ISO image. The exact
way of doing this depends on the burning software you use.

Burn new CDs with the correct command.

You should "install" the new kernel, not "upgrade". That way the old
kernel is not removed.

Consider the usual software thankyou list:

  Many thanks to the following people for their helpful comments and
  contributions to this document:

     Bob Bagwill <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
     Jim Carroll <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
     Tom Christiansen <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

I say that it is about time these start getting written

     Bob Bagwill <http://nurdly.nist.gov/bagman>
     Jim Carroll <http://his.host.com/~jim>
     Tom Christiansen <http://www.perl.com/teamplayers/tchrist>
etc.

I can think of a 100 reasons why the latter is better, and only one or
two for the former.

I can get the e-mail address from the webpage, but not the web page
from the e-mail address without [search engine luck or] pestering the
target: "I just wanted to find out what color Dennis Ritchie's hair
was these days. The photo was right there on the web page, but all I
had was this flimsy e-mail address from one of those thankyou lists.
Well, as you guessed it, I don't think he 'had a nice day' thanks to
me."

We are also hoping that whatever contact information will be around
years from now. It seems that one's webpage, well placed, will at
least as permanent as one's email address.

Also, which would you rather have in a thankyou list, your naked e-mail
address ripe for the spam harvester vultures, or instead, your URL,
where folks can browse your best photos and leave compliments on your
fine taste in data files.

Hello,

I have recently noticed that Red Hat 6.2 ships with libgr but does not
ship netpnm. This seems a little bit strange to me. Did they forget to
include the package or did they leave it out because of licensing
problems with Unisys and GIFs? What exactly is the relationship
between libgr and netpnm? Has one of them obsoleted or is it just
that Red Hat forgot to include it?

Here are links to the two packages:

Reply-To: "Andrew Smith" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Hi

I have a linux box set up to act as an internet server (i.e., dialup, mail,
news, etc...). Everything has been working fine, although recently some
programs have been experiencing odd pauses. For example, when recieving
email, fetchmail pauses when collecting each message. See fetchmail output
below:

===========<SNIP>============
reading message 31 of 51 (2590 octets)
fetchmail: SMTP> MAIL
FROM:<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
BODY=8BITMIME SIZE=2590

*** 5-10 second pause here ***

fetchmail: SMTP< 250
<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>...
Sender ok
fetchmail: SMTP> RCPT TO:<andrew@localhost>
fetchmail: SMTP< 250 <andrew@localhost>... Recipient ok
fetchmail: SMTP> DATA
fetchmail: SMTP< 354 Enter mail, end with "." on a line by itself
#***************************************.fetchmail: SMTP>. (EOM)
fetchmail: SMTP< 250 LAA09514 Message accepted for delivery
 flushed
fetchmail: POP3> DELE 31
fetchmail: POP3< +OK
fetchmail: POP3> TOP 32 99999999
fetchmail: POP3< +OK
===========</SNIP>============

Also, when I try to send emails form my windows machine, it connects to my
server although sending the message takes about 5-10 seconds to be accepted.

I suspect that the problem is due to DNS lookups, as the pauses may be from
fetchmail and sendmail checking that the to and from addresses will resolve
(i.e. anti-spam precautions). Am I correct in thinking this? If so, what can
I do? I have recently switched ISPs - could my problem just be my new ISPs
really slow DNS server or is it something else?

Thanks,

Andrew

Is there any reason why DOS shouldn't boot?

image=/boot/vmlinuz

    label=linux
other=/dev/hdb1
    table=dev/hdb

when I boot DOS, I get a "no system boot preset...." message.
the linux partition boots with no problem at all.

Any suggestions?

Hello
I have a problem with the bootprocess in my pc.
Whenever i try to boot from the hdd, i get an errormess. that there is no o.s.
installed.
I saw it first when trying to boot win NT4.0 , i tried with an rescue floppy,
no succes, then i installed win2k on the first partition ( c:) an win2k gave
no errormess. when formatting the c: drive. Untill i had to boot from the hdd
to complete the install process of win2k, same error that there was no o.s.
installed. Looks to me that there must be something wrong with the MBR, I
tried to setup the cmos with fail-safe defaults, no succes. I can only boot
from an fdd into linux, or from a cd-rom ( linux, NT, 2k ..) .. just the hdd
won't work.
My linix partitions are far beyond the 1024's cil. ( they are above
the 20'th gb..)so i can't even install lilo in the mbr..( suse 6.3.. kernel
2.2.13 ) Can anybody help me out ? i need NT or 2k badly because some people
here are affraid of anything wich doesn't look like a window, from ms.. and i
don't want to boot from a floppy the rest of my life :-)

It's great experience when I see my eyes what I've wanted.
I can do what I really want in Linux, this is the big difference with commercial OSes.

As soon as I fixed the hardware problem after upgrading Kerenl 2.4.2,
my SMP Linux box runs very stable.

Upgrade OpenGL library,
Upgrade KDE 1.1 to KDE 2.0
Upgrade KDE 2.0 to KDE 2.1
Upgrade OpenSSL
<snip>

Very nice,

I appreciate for all the guys who improves Linux for better one.

I'm no Lilo expert so this may be (probably is) wrong. In my lilo.conf
definition of 'other', the table and label entries are swapped.
ie label first. And table has a leading '/', table=/dev/hdb.

Silly question but, are the dos system files present on /dev/hdb ?

The below is the compilation order of my personal favor.

Qt
kdesupport
kdelibs
kdebase

other packages - your choices.

The three packages are the core of KDE and you can enjoy KDE.

Well, before you start building KDE, check the guide and recommendation
about building environment and requirement.

For example, if your system have old OpenSSL like 0.9.4 but KDE 2.1
use OpenSSL 0.9.6 above.

Well, the "dev/hdb" without the leading "/" is just a typo.
The order of the commands is not an issue.
/dev/hdb1 is a 800M, FAT16 primary and active partition....

Yes. Simply write an X server which resizes the display in
mid-session without breaking any programs.

I got RH7.0 installed and access it from my NT box using Exceed.
When I do "ls -l", directories, flat files, scripts, etc, are shown in their
own
color. When I had this problem in RH6.1, I edited the .Xdefaults and got
the color scheme removed.

In RH7.0, the setting must be saved in elsewhere as altering .Xdefaults
would make any difference. Please help!

Yes it reformats the partition. I actually use mke2fs to clear
partitions.
You should unmount the partition before clearing it, and mount it again
afterwards. You should be careful that you don't remove something
important
from the partition. For example, if your partition is mounted on /var
you
would not want to erase the spool, log, and other directories.

Once you have made your file system and mounted it, you can then start
using it
again. There is no need to use dd or anything unless you really want to
get rid
of any previous data. In that case, assuming your partition is mounted
on /music,
you can type 'dd if=/dev/zero of=/music/junk bs=1M' which will run until
a 'no space'
error occurs. Then 'rm /music/junk' ad all the free space will be zeros.

I have yet another idea how to solve the problem mentioned in my previous
post. It would be wonderfull if I could mount the nfsroot partition and
the
ramdisk at the same time. Is it possible?
What about such a structure:
1) initrd with empty /linuxrc and all necessary directories: /mnt /tmp
   /var
2) nfsroot root partition with /initrd mount point and following
   symlinks:
   /tmp -> /initrd/tmp
   /var -> /initrd/var
   /etc -> /initrd/etc

Is it supposed to work, or have I missed something?

You just need to locate where you distribution initializes /etc/motd,
possibly with 'grep -r motd /etc/rc.d/init.d/*' (SysV init) or 'grep
-r /etc/rc.d/*' (BSD init), and comment that out.

Then just write to motd whatever you want and that will be displayed.
