I am trying to connect to an AIX box which requires wyse50 terminal
emulation. I used the command TERM=wyse50. But when I connect, I just
get garbage on my screen. Am I missing a step? Thanks.

Sorry, I missed the original thread, all I have is the above.

1) nslookup says nothing about the ability to communicate with the
target system... it says only that you can communicate with a
nameserver that knows that system's IP address.

2) If there are routers between the pinger and the target system, they
may not pass ICMP (ping protocol). I imagine W2K also can be
configured to reject ICMP. Because ICMP can be used to hack.

Uh....did not realize that 586 was a default for the slackware linux
distribution. I was using bare.i and text.gz, version 3.3 in my efforts
to install the version 7.1 "A" series of floppy install disks.
I have not reached the point of compiling anything at all.

Maybe I need to poke around for an older slackware release.

There is only One True Editor: Emacs. (Oh, look; I've accidentally
started a holy war! :-))

I'd recommend you get to know Emacs sooner or later, but mind you,
it doesn't exactly take the novice by the hand and leads him gently
through the rough world of advanced text editors. Emacs can, among
other things, do everything, but it comes at a price, albeit a low
one, in my opinion.

If you just want to edit a text file here and now with absolutely no
nonsense, let me recommend pico or, preferably, nano.

Even if he doesnt touch / it can still cause the kernel to panic

e.g

/dev/hda1 FAT (C:)
/dev/hda2 <hda5 hda6 hda7......
/dev/had5 /

fips gives space between 1 and 2
somehow extends 2 backwards ???

creates partition in free space
this partion will be hda5 pushing / forward in the numbering
now /home = /dev/hda5
and / = /dev/hda6

kernel will panic trying to find init in /home/(s)bin

I know. It happend to me.

Subject: write permission to WIn partitions
Date: Thu, 5 Apr 2001 16:46:22 -0400

I've been trying to give write permissions to all users to the existing
windows partitions, but as of now only root is able to write. The
following is the relevant portion of fstab.

/dev/hda1 /mnt/c vfat defaults 0 0
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom iso9660 noauto,users,ro 0 0
/dev/hda8 /mnt/d vfat defaults,rw 0 0
/dev/hda9 /mnt/e vfat defaults 0 0

I'd like to give write permissions to all users to /mnt/d. Could you
please give me the right options to pass to fstab. Thanx in advance.

Yes, it can, theoretically. Its just the risk of the user panicking
IMO is higher if I overdo my advice than of the kernel panicking because
I dont give enough.

You forgot to verify the partition names against the fstab.
Sorry to state it that way, but you did.

When working on your partitions you _always_ doublecheck your
partition names against the fstab before rebooting. This is not
a bug, neither of fips nor of fdisk.

Perhaps the dpi setting of your X-Server is wrong. use something along the

Here you might try to play around with gamma correction (option is -gamma
value). Bigger values mean brighter colours. man XFree86
This is not supported by all drivers.

hello,
in our /etc/fstab we have the following line.
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom iso9660 ro,noauto 0 0.
when we type mount /dev/cdrom /mnt we get the error
the kernel does not recognize dev/cdrom as a block device maybe 'insmod
driver'?

we tried changing the fstab to /dev/hdc but it will not work.
however on boot it appears that hda is the cdrom. this used to work all
along.
why today it doesn't makes no sense.

thank you.

That's exacvtly the idea. But modules_install will (compile and)

I got parted installed and I've read the docs but I'm having difficulty
figuring out a plan. here's my issue:

/dev/hda8 256667 83514 159901 35% /
/dev/hda5 9005272 3280128 5267696 39% /usr

if I want to make hda5 go away I need to create a "usr" dir on / (hda8)...
but to do this I probably need to unmount /usr (hda5)... and if I do that,
won't I be screwing myself? and once I unmount it and create my new /usr dir
on hda8, how do I remount hda5 so I can copy all the data out of it?

1k thx - e

p.s. incidentally, I get this message when I run parted:

Using /dev/hda
Warning: The operating system thinks the geometry on /dev/hda is
2501/255/63.
Therefore, cylinder 1024 ends at 8032.499M. You should check that this
matches
the BIOS geometry before using this program.

...but in the BIOS I have this HDD set up as Auto - I haven't specified a
particular geometry. can anyone tell me whether this is a problem and why I
get the message?

Please read what the original poster wanted. He wanted to *skip*
some part of the code which has already been tested. The

Yes indeed. It is absolutely necessary to use vi. You have to
configure Emacs, and vi is as good as anything to do that with.
After that, viva la Emacs... and throw vi away.
