Is logrotate not NFS safe? The reason I ask is I have a linux client
that mounts an NFS drive from a Solaris Server. It's been recently
migrated to this, and I still have the linux client configured to
do logrotate. Last night at 4 a.m. when logrotate runs, my linux server
hung hard and bad.

Will logrotate run and compile on solaris? I guess I'll find out. Any
insights appreciated.

Subject: Tape Device Name

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

How do I determine the device name of a tape drive. I recently added a
SCSI Tape Drive to my machine.
Boot up finds the device properly as follows:
Vendor: HP Model: C1537A Rev: L706
Type: Sequential-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 02

My only problem is I don't know how to reference this device. In the
past I've used /dev/rmt. On this box that only includes /dev/rmt16 and
/dev/rmt8. I tried using taper, just cos I'm looking for something that
gives me a nice interface initially, and doing taper -T /dev/rmt16 and
taper -T /dev/rmt8 both give errors of illegal tape type.

Anyhelp would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,
Brian Seppanen

I had a similar problem with mandrake 7.0, I had to fdisk /mbr then you
should be able to install what you want.

I searched through the man page for xterm for cursor and blink and I can't

Same problem. I also need to use the web access so any pointers that would save

Yes, it's possible. The biggest caveat to getting it started is simply
installing all the OSs in a way that'll let them all boot. It's probably
best to install Win98, then Win2K, then Linux. I recommend putting Win98
and Win2K each on its own primary partition. That way, they won't be
sharing any files on C: (each will have its own partition that it calls
C:). Doing it this way may require you use a third-party boot loader
(LILO should be able to do the trick, but if you use it, you'll have to
wait until you install Linux to get it booting any arbitrary OS.)

There are several HOWTOs on Linux-and-whatever dual-boot configurations.
I don't recall any on triple-boot setups, but there might be one that
I'm forgetting or that's new. Check http://www.linuxdoc.org for more
details. For MUCH more information, check my book, _The Multiboot
Configuration Handbook_ (http://www.rodsbooks.com/multiboot/).

Well, 'du -sk /home/*' will print the size in KB of every directory in /home.
>From there, 'man sort'.

I know you specified "not perl", but I've got a canned Perl script which
tracks changes in disk usage over the past day and week for any list
of directories you specify. Email me directly if you want it.

alphabetic sorting: du -sk /home/*

increasing in size: du -sk /home/* | sort -n

decreasing in size: du -sk /home/* | sort -n | tac

Alternatively, you can run ntpd. Check out freshmeat for the location since I

Try again; it's really quite simple.

For the clue-impaired:
        1) man xterm
        2) search for 'blink' (type '/blink')
        3) 1st match (unless your less does case-insensitive matching;
if it does, press `n' until...),
           at line 171:
+bc turn off text cursor blinking. This overrides the
                       cursorBlink resource.

        4) 2nd match (press `n'), line 174:
-bc turn on text cursor blinking. This overrides the
                       cursorBlink resource.

so `xterm -bc' does what you want. Not that hard to find, really.

That was of course the first thing I tried. It doesn't help.

With gpm disabled, the problem has now been narrowed to the fact
that both the PS/2 mouse and the module yenta_socket called when
pcmcia is bourght up want to use irq 12. I've tried various
ways to dissuade pcmcia from using irq 12, but so far everything
has failed.

Of course, there is some other basic problem because of the
fact that gpm hangs the system and yenta_socket should know that
irq 12 is reserved for the mouse.

I believe they assume that you know what you're doing and hence know how
to enable a simple service.

A more elegant solution is to (as root):
1) run "/usr/sbin/ntsysv", and check "wu-ftpd"
2) Click OK
3) run "/etc/rc.d/init.d/xinetd restart"

No need to reboot the machine!

What's the problem with xinetd? I don't think running "ntsysv" to

A simple answer: Install Ximian GNOME :-)

Have you tried setting up your printer with printconf, the printer
configuration tool in RH 7.1? AFAIK, printtool is obsoleted. I set up my
printer with printconf, and it works great.

I think Conectiva has a port of apt to rpm.

You don't have to pay a thing. Get a free RHN account on
https://www.redhat.com/network/ . Then you can use up2date on as many
systems you want. You can use it to update your Red Hat systems but also
to retrieve and install packages.

For example, if I want to install wu-ftpd:

# up2date wu-ftpd
Retrieving list of all available packages...
Removing installed packages from list of updates...
########################################
Removing packages with files not specified from list...
Removing packages marked to skip from list...
########################################
Getting headers for available packages...

Removing packages with files marked to skip from list...
########################################
Testing package set / solving RPM inter-dependencies...
########################################
Retrieving selected packages...
wu-ftpd: ##########################
Done.
Preparing... ###########################################
[100%]

Most likely not. RH 7 and 7.1 uses XFree86 4 by default, while older
releases use XFree86 3, and AFAIK the configuraion files are not
compatible. Sounds like your graphics hardware does not work nicely with
XFree86 4.

On Red Hat, you can try running "Xconfigurator --preferxf3" to setup
your graphics with XFree86 3, and see if that helps.

Have you changed "AllowOverride None" to "AllowOverride AuthConfig" in
httpd.conf?

Uh, sounds like you haven't updated your server properly. If you read
http://www.redhat.com/support/errata/RHSA-2001-007.html , you'll see
that the DoS attacks are nothing compared to the bind remote root
exploit with bind 8.2.2.

My suggestion is to update to the Red Hat errata packages mentioned in
the errata above immediately, and subscribe to the Red Hat watch list
(send a mail with "subscribe" in the subject to
[EMAIL PROTECTED]). That way you will know when new
security updates are released. Also, using up2date to update your system
at regular intervals is a good preventive measure.
