Subject: RHL7.0 and PHP4: Apache config file problem: file extensions
Date: Sat, 19 May 2001 02:07:57 -0230

The /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf file that comes with RHL7.0 contains the
following lines (see below). This is pointless as Red Hat 7.0 does not
install PHP/FI which is now outdated and does not install PHP3 either
but does install PHP4 which is broken up into the packages php-ldap,
mod_php, php, php-imap, php-mysql, php-pgsql, and php-manual. Hence
the PHP/FI and perhaps also the PHP3 lines should have been commented
out by the RPM spec file as I can now use .php3 extensions but not
.php or .php4 extensions for files to be correctly interpreted by the
Apache web server and I am not root on the system hence I cannot change
this. Has this problem been fixed in Red Hat 7.1?

Thanks!

# The following is for PHP4 (conficts with PHP/FI, below):
<IfModule mod_php4.c>
  AddType application/x-httpd-php .php4 .php3 .phtml .php
  AddType application/x-httpd-php-source .phps
</IfModule>

# The following is for PHP3:
<IfModule mod_php3.c>
  AddType application/x-httpd-php3 .php3
  AddType application/x-httpd-php3-source .phps
</IfModule>

# The following is for PHP/FI (PHP2):

My experience with Linux has been really good.
My experience with Mandrake has been really bad.
Improper drivers, can't connect to internet -- etc, etc.
I would suggest your problem is with Mandrake, and not necessarily with
Linux.

I added the path to /etc/profile and it works for me. You could also add it
to ~/.bashrc would would work for the bash shell run as that user. It seems
to over ride the path in /etc/profile which confused me until I realized why
the new path I added in /etc/profile didn't work (still had an older path in
.bashrc.)
I don't know where the rpm installs, I used the .bin file. My java is in
/usr/local/java. Do a search in /usr for starters. Apparently some
distributions deposit in /opt/....
I am far from 'experienced', but these are what I have gleaned from others

Maybe the guy isn't a 1337 H@X0R like you guys and maybe he is just a
average Joe. Am about ready to give up playing around with Mandrake 8.0 and
go back to Windows myself. Hell I'll be the first to admit am a newbie to
Linux and all ( 3 months of messing with Linux ) but it seems to me from
right off the bat that Linux distro's that claim to be working towards ease
of use have a longs way to go. You know not everything worth using has to be
mind numbly difficult or overly complex. There's a lot of things I like
about Linux like the freedom of development it allows programmers to access
the OS so they can build apps that work without the added layer of junk
coding that MS has and the it's reliable networking and fast TCP/IP stacks.
Despite those pros I think for average people like me who do not have the
time and patience to wade through vast amount of reading material just to
get a video card or network card to work. MS Windows allows us to get a lot
done without having to get or hands dirty. To me this is kind of like the
difference between people who like fixing and customizing there own car and
the people who like taking there cars to their local mechanic to fix it. For
some it maybe fun or just a hobby and even a way to make money but for
others who do not have the know how, knowledge or time to learn how to do
such things. Having someone else do the hard work for us is whole lot easier
and covenant.

P.S. You ELITIST LINUX ( not everyone here. ) USERS can me flame all you
want for my opinion but I don't care.

I am running RH 7.1 on an Intel system. I am trying to get me CDRW
working and the "CD-Writing-HOWTO" said that I needed to download and
install "mkisofs". Well I downloaded it but I can't seem to find a way
to install it. I ran the commands: "gunzip filename.gz" and "tar -xvf
filename.tar" and extracted the files. Now what? Can anyone help?
Thanks,

It's 3.05 that's needed, as far as I recall from the perennial torrent
of messages to that effect here and elsewhere, and their exhortations
to "read the notice on the redhat and rpm sites".

But you'd have had to configure your rpm install to use exactly the
same databse and config file sites as your old rpm. Did you? I doubt
it. And then you'd have had to rebuild the rpm database. Did you?

Thinking. You did some, now do some more .. !

Sounds like a pretty reasonable opinion to me.

I think most current Linux distributions have a GUI-based video setup
program that makes it pretty easy to get X working with many (perpaps most)
video cards and monitors, but I'm sure there are some configurations that
need hand setup or tuning. This is one of MS's advantages - that they have
so much market share any video card manufacturer that wants to do well must
provide a good driver that works under Windows.

In some cases, if you know a good Linux expert and are willing to pay for
it, you can hire him or her to deal with the hard issues and get Linux working
for you. It all depends on your priorities. I'm sure for some it turns
out that the best solution is to stay with Windows. Hopefully, as Linux
becomes easier to use as time passes, this will be the case for less and
less people - that is, people only stay with Windows because they prefer it
rather than that they find Linux too daunting.

Isn't there a README and/or INSTALL file in the package that explains how
to install it? Most packages have this or some other file that tells you
how to procede. If there is no such file and if there are no instructions
on the site you downloaded it from, you should mention that (here) and
hopefully someone familiar with the package can help you.

Subject: HELP with makefile
Date: Sat, 19 May 2001 04:23:24 -0400

Hi,

I need a makefile with the following rules:

For *ANY* "file" or "header":

1) create file.o from file.cpp with g++ -c file.cpp (and file.o depends on
file.cpp)

2) whenever file.cpp #include's header.h, file.o depends on header.h
(recursively)

3) file always depends on file.o, which should be used by the linker

4) whenever file.cpp #include's header.h and header.cpp exists and file.o
is used by the linker, header.o should also be used (with the appropriate
dependency: linker target depends on header.o)

5) I would also like to specify linking to libraries on a per-source-file
basis (as opposed to the usual per-target-file basis), e.g.
"eigenvalues.cpp -> lapack, blas, g2c", so that whenever the linker uses
eigenvalues.o (in any context), it would also link with "-llapack -lblas
-lg2c"

If I could somehow put these rules into a makefile, it would probably be
the last makefile I will ever have to edit! (except for the per-source-file
libraries dependency specification mentioned in rule #1)

I'm terrible at make-syntax though, so for me, even rule #1 is a challenge,
let alone the rest of them. However, it seems to me that these rules must
be requested quite frequently, so I'm hoping someone already wrote a
makefile implementing these rules that he or she can post.

Thanks in advance!

There seems to be be a typo, try 'grep -i idle /usr/src/linux/.config'
