Hi
I want to know which text editors are good to develop applications with
linux and which is the web site to download.
The KDE Text Editor is horrible for me because when I am writting if
the text line is too long the editor cut the line in the middle. I want
a text editor with horizontal scroll bar. And if is possible, with the
same frame window it can have more than one files opened like Ultraedit
for windows.
Thanks.
Artur.

It doesn't necessarily have to be that way, it's just the default.

Most likely your partition table is corrupted; it's easy to hose up
a Win* system that way, as the bootloader and all the relevant Win* tools
(like fdisk.exe) are very limited in its capabilities. I'd suspect
that probably your Win* partition has been assigned a different
partition id, this rendering Win* unbootable. Another possible reason
would be a changed partition layout. If you did, however, have some
sort of diskmanager software installed, then you're on your own.
EZ-Disk and similar tools change the partition table layout in a
way that makes restoring it close to impossible. Just try to remove
EZ-Disk from a disk once you don't need it anymore; it's hopeless
without manually overwriting the relevant sectors.
Please show us your partition table as reported by Linux' fdisk.

I use svga-mode 7 with my MatroxG400, it's 132x43 with 68Hz.
I tried more ( I think 140x50 ) but then the framrate was only
50Hz, which is too low ( for me ).

You don't write lines longer than 72 characters in any programming
style known to mankind ... and you don't use an editor that does
interpretation in order to write programs!
Use the traditional programming editors, emacs or vi (I use vim, other
people use xemacs or emacs). If you like windows style editors, use
nedit.
BTW, I've just tested the KDE editor (kwrite) on my machine and it
doesn't "cut the line in the middle". It scrolls to the right, using
a horizontal scrollbar. Please revisit your settings!

Any editor will do that. But even if it can't, you can open as many
windows as you like with an editor in each!

with the kdm (kde-login manager) u have to log in as root. then u can
edit the list (in kde it's the Application/LoginManager entry in
kcontrol).. now, the login manager still needs to know, what to do, when
a certain windowmanager is selected..
have a look at /etc/X11/xdm/Xsession

Hi,
does anyone know what we need to be able to communicate with our Linux
platform using a serial line, instead of using ethernet + telnet?
It appears there is a 'default ' application for Linux supporting this...
Also, what do we need on the other pc then? A terminal application?
Thanks,

Find a program on your 7.1 box called FTPD Editor - which is the easiest way
to configure your requirements.

There should be a new editor "kate" in the upcoming kde 2.2. It has all
those features.

try rmmod tulip, if it succeeds may be the module is getting loaded by some
init script
otherwise, this kernel may have tulip compiled in.
it is usually not needed to pass IRQ etc with PCI cards, they are PnP

Read the Serial-HOWTO for information on this.
You really don't need anything at all, apart from a nul-modem cable. The
rest is standard on your machine.
> It appears there is a 'default ' application for Linux supporting this...
?? "All" applications support whatever it is you are trying to do. You
haven't specified enough .. are you trying to do a login across the
serial line from a vt100 terminal? Or are you trying to connect two
computers over PPP on the serial line, using the IP interfaces?
> Also, what do we need on the other pc then? A terminal application?
?? Depends what you are trying to do. For a serial login, at one end
you need a terminal emulator that talks to the serial line, and at the
otehr end you need a listening getty plus login program that will
let you authenticate and will then connect a shell to the io lines.
There are plenty of choices for all those. The serial howto will tell
you more.

Well it's been updated 3 times now, to 10.03. It is getting better,
and more and more applications are coming on line. At this point,
I'm using it as my everyday at home-OS with no troubles, although my
needs are small since my most used applications are text-editors,
terminals, browsers, and an IDE.
The IDE is quite interesting, REALbasic runs natively in OSX and is
a fairly nice development environment for Mac. To my mind it has a
much more elegant object model than VB and it runs without some of
VB's issues. It can compile for OSX, MacOS, and (!)Win32. (No
affiliation yada yada).
Nice piece of work.

Just use a DOS or Win 9x boot floppy that have the commands FDISK and
FORMAT.
Fdisk the partition according to your needs, and then format.
Install Windows.

First problem: there is no monolithic approach to creating GUI apps for X.
One of the more widespread (and older) widget sets is Motif (Lesstif). A
popular approach for Gnome is the GTK+ set of tools. KDE apps typically are
created with Qt. wxWindows provides easy cross platform development, though
they all do, to some extent. Also, they all can be mixed and matched at the
app level. Then there is the myriad of solutions based on the tcl Tk
package.
I'm sure there are other schemes. Motif and GTK+ are C, though there are C++
interfaces for each. Then, there are further toolkits for building apps that
will play well on a specific desktop.
Welcome to *nix. The famous Perl slogan, "There is more than one way to do
it" applies fully.

i would guess mic/rec/input_boost(depending on your sound hw) mixer levels..
try a mixer with 'all' your soundhw levels.. if you got kde, try "kmix" and

Thanks for the advice, but...
nsswitch.conf has been set files dns from the beginning
However, Nicolai Langfeldt's DNS HOWTO at
http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/DNS-HOWTO.html states:
"In some resolv.conf files you find a line saying "domain". That's
fine, but don't use both "search" and "domain", only one of them will
work"
So my resolv.conf reads
search domain.com domain.com
nameserver 127.0.0.1
nameserver IP address of the server
nameserver ISP IP
nameserver ISP secondary
under search, i tossed in the second domain.com because i'm grasping, it
is the exact same as the domain listed.
under nameserver - Will a 4th entry be used?

Subject: Low cost timer-counter pci board w/Linux driver?
Date: 30 May 2001 07:00:34 -0700
Hi,
We are looking for a low cost PCI timer/counter boards, that there are
linux drivers for.
Thus far, the only one we have been able to find is an ISA board
(CIO-CTR05) (http://www.measurementcomputing.com) and the driver at
the Linux Lab Project (http://www.llp.fu-berlin.de)
We have found several DAC boards with timers and Linux drivers but we
are looking for low cost counter/timer board.
The timers must have at least microsecond if not nanosecond
resolution.
Does anyone have any suggestions where we can find one other than the
PCI-CTR05 (which would need to have the CIO driver modified for)?
Thanks
C.

To wipe the disk
>From a running linux system you can also wipe the disk and remove all
data and partitions.
!!!! WARNING !!!!
!!!! THIS WILL DELETE ALL PARTITIONS !!!!
!!!! IT WILL WIPE THE DRIVE AND REMOVE ALL DATA !!!!
!!!! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED !!!!
cat /dev/zero >/dev/hdX
You will need to format the disk if you are going to use it for a
windows system.

If you have sufficient space you can dedicate an extra
partition to move data around cleverly and make the
transition. I did not have to use any rescue disk.
Let's say you have the following
hda1 /
hda2 /usr
hda3 /home
hda4 /free
Then you can do
# umount /free
# mkreiserfs /dev/hda4
# mount -t reiserfs /dev/hda4 /free
# mkdir /free/{usr,home}
# cp -af /home /usr /free
Also move everything under / except /boot /usr and /home
to /free. Modify /etc/fstab appropriately so that
when you reboot you get just
hda1 /boot
hda4 /
Then make hda2 and hda3 reiserfs. Then move
/home and /usr data to hda2 and hda3. Then
modify /etc/fstab. Reboot
Have done this on many systems including
remote servers I managed

I've been very impressed by Xmanager
(http://www.netsarang.com/products/xmanager.html), which is $69 for a
single license. (There's a demo version you can download to try it
out.) If $69 is too much, check out Mi/X
(http://www.microimages.com/freestuf/mix/), which is $25. (I've not
used the latest version of Mi/X, but the older versions I have tried
were very weak.) There's also a port of XFree86 to Windows underway
(http://sources.redhat.com/cygwin/xfree/). I was unsuccessful in
getting it working when I tried a couple of months ago, but you might
have better luck or it may have become easier in that time.
Another option is to use VNC (http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/).
This runs a special X/VNC server on the Linux or Unix box, which
communicates with a VNC client on the Windows box. (It can also go the
other way, letting you use Windows remotely.) In my experience, it's
usually slower than X on a LAN, and it's got more issues than do most X
servers, but it's free, it's better than the weakest X servers, and it
allows you to use Windows boxes remotely. I'm not sure offhand if
there's a version for SCO.
