I always run lilo after recompilling; but often I reinstall and play one
change
at a time. Maybe I need more time, and errors, before I can weed them out.

Thanks for your suggestions.

In /etc/rc.d/rc.local:
for t in 1 2 3 4 5 6
do

In /etc/rc.d/rc.local:
setfont lat1-16.psfu # or another latin font file
loadkeys cf.map

For X, you modify XF86Config file.

Is there a Linux dist that's only graphical, all I want to do is point

anything.I don't care if they operate the same, all I want is a choice.

When I go in a store to buy whatever,I have a choice of brands or when I
buy a car, the same motor is not in every brand. I have no intention of
learning Dos all over again.

You have a choice:

Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 2000, Windows NT, Windows XP, MacOS

pick one.

Hello,

I tried to create a new project with kdevelop 1.2 (SuSE 7.0), but although
I have qtdevel-1.45 and qtlib-1.45 installed it keeps saying
"checking for Qt... configure: error: Qt (>= 1.42 and < 2.0) (libraries)

My $QTDIR is on /usr/lib/qt and this directory is the one qt is installed

Looks for me, as if you had changed the cdrom in your

Custom Install, then check the box to "select individual packages"... It can
be time consuming because of the "organization", but it does provide the
opportunity to strip away the extra packages that aren't used.

Of course the installer will perform dependency checks after the selections
are made, for which the decision will have to be made as to whether or not
you want to satisfy the dependencies or go back to make further changes.

Be sure to read the individual package descriptions to make sure that the
system can live without them. Another good source of info would be the
document "Optimizing & Securing Linux 1.3" from
http://www.linuxdoc.org/guides.html ... Though it addresses optimizing/
securing Redhat 6.x servers it can be easily adapted to workstations
(especially the sections package selection, manual configuration and optimization).

Hope this helps a little bit...

Nope! all sites. This is immediate.

Surely if I connect to a site, then click on
a link, read the link page then click on "back"
to return to the previous page, it should
load from the cache and not reload from the
net.

But it does not, I can watch the progress indicator
on the corner of the window displaying the download
including infuriatingly "stalled ".

What use is the cache?

I've been trying to look around, but can't really find anything on it. I
know I'm just not looking right. Man's, HOW-TO's, nothing comes really close
in my guessing what topic it would be under. But basically I need some basic
help in writing simple batched command scripts.

For example, I want to make a script to create a user and make a password:
#useradd -m <newuser>
#passwd <newuser>

With it prompting for the <newuser> name once to use in both lines.
Playing around I made a file that has those lines, chmod'd it to be
executable, and it works but of course, only with whatever name I put in the
file in place of <newuser>. So I need to know how to get a file to prompt
for a user,
OR better yet, to take what's put in the command line at the same time.
For example if I named the above file "ua", and I could type at the prompt:
#ua fred
It would complete the two commands using "fred" as the username.

Anyway, if anyone knows the MAN or HOW-TO that would explain this, or a doc
on the web, I would be REALLY appreciative!
Thanks!

Subject: increasing ulimit for core files
From: Steve Allan <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Date: Mon, 04 Jun 2001 20:33:29 GMT

I'm running RedHat 6.2 in a development environment and I need to
allow developers to write core files. The problem is the default
ulimit settings are different for a user when logged in directly to
the console versus logged in remotely:

# console
% ulimit -H -c
unlimited
% ulimit -S -c
1000000

# telnet session
% ulimit -H -c
0
% ulimit -S -c
0

The 1000000 soft limit is being set in /etc/profile, but it fails for
remote logins with the message

bash: ulimit: cannot modify limit: Operation not permitted

because the hard limit is set to 0 for a remote login, so users cannot
increase it. Does anyone know how/why/where this is set, or how I can
change this behavior?

Thanks.

I'll save you the trouble of looking any further for an answer. Linux is
not for you. Not because it is too difficult to use, or install, or figure
out, or that there are no apps for it, or that you can't point-and-click...
but because you've already made up your mind that you don't want to learn
anything new. Do yourself a favor and stick with what you have. You'll be
better off. (Unless of course you change your outlook on things).

Try (untested):

#!/bin/bash
USER=${1}
useradd -m $USER
passwd $USER

Run it
./scriptname username

There is a Bash HowTo and some starting points, considering shell
scripting.

Search linuxdoc.org and google.com, I'm sure you'll find some docs
or/and if you're serious, take a look at some good books...

Good luck

Red Hat Linux 7.1 comes with both Netscape Communicator 4.76 (4.77 is
available via up2date) and Mozilla. I would recommend that you go ahead
and upgrade from the Mozilla that comes with the distribution to 0.9
(www.mozilla.org - RPM is available). Both packages come with an HTML
editor and brower.

The Gimp (an open-source image editor comparable to Adobe Photoshop)
also comes with Red Hat Linux 7.1.

People have varying preferences on Linux distributions. Since no
company (seemingly) has perfected the end-user, consumer Linux the
question is really not an easy one.

Mandrake has its foundation in Red Hat's own distribution - they also
package it with their own special utilities and tools to make it easier
to configure and setup your system.

GNOME is based on GTK+ (the Gimp Tool[k]it) - GTK+ is a type of library
that makes writing visual applications for Linux easier. GTK+ is a
versatile, but still in development library.

KDE is based on QT - QT is common, popular library that renders visual
objects for Linux.

I like GNOME - it is extremely flexible and, with Ximian's
(www.ximian.com) release of GNOME 1.4, it is sleek and very nice to use
(using Nautilus/Mozilla as its core). And, GNOME can mimic KDE's
interface directly (an option you won't find with KDE).

But, Konqueror (the file browser with KDE) is very powerful and has its
own following of fans that make KDE the major contender for Linux
desktop dominance.

I imagine Red Hat asking _you_ which desktop you want to use because it
is giving you the option, letting YOU decide which desktop - which is
what most Linux users come to appreciate, right? :)
