OK. conf/dosemu.conf makes a difference:
try the "native" speaker and run
xdosemu -D+ci -o log
try to beep (a beeping game or your example), exit dosemu. In the log file
you should have:
CONF: allowing speaker port access!
and furtheron something like
SPEAKER: sound OFF!
SPEAKER: on, period=1325
SPEAKER: sound OFF!
SPEAKER: sound OFF!
SPEAKER: sound OFF!
Apparently, under X, apart from the CONF output, "native" or "emulated"
makes no difference in practice; only on the console for a (suid-)root
dosemu it does.
