Development is slow. There are few developers and fewer are active. I did
a lot to get FreeDOS working nicely with DOSEmu and Hans continues
maintaining it. Right now I am really too occupied doing other things. You
can be annoyed, well the only thing you can do about it is to fix it
yourself or ask somebody to do it for you.
Stas Sergeev is working on some of the DPMI and mouse problems right
now. Sound support was mostly written by Alistair MacDonald, but he is too
busy with other things right now.
16-bit SVGA support: it is important here to distinguish between Console
and X. The console needs to support the hardware and needs (suid)root; X
has to emulate so can be slow, but does support 16-bit Vesa modes. You can
run DOS games/graphical apps in a window, something WinXX cannot do AFAIK.
Most pre-say-1994 games (say up to DOOM/Duke3D) and many of the later ones
work fine in my experience, though you have to miss sound in most
cases. Certainly I don't have many problems with most games that also ran
on XT's which usually did not even have a sound card - only a beep -
though I have seen issues reported by others.
Windows 98 totally circumvents things that are "not done" in Linux - like
direct port access and many other things. It offers almost no real
security. That's also why it is much easier to crash it.
It is better to compare DOSEmu to a Win NT/2000/XP DOS box, where security
is important. And it has been reported that in many cases DOSEmu works
better than the Win NT/... DOS box.
I hope that explains it a bit.
