What about root console dosemu instead of xdos? SVGA support seems to
work well under console.
And sound support is problematic because it requires a DMA emulation
and DSP emulation - both things are difficult to implement.
Just motivate someone by paying him and you'll get it :)

DPMI have some permanent problems that will probably never be fixed.
There are also some bugs that can be fixed, but don't count on it too much :)
You can always try to fix it yourself as many users do (including me:)

Do you want to know the date? Look, it's free software. People mostly do
what they need and when they need.

What prevents you from using, say, vmware?

This is not correct. Win98 allows dos programs to directly access hardware
so any dos program under win98 can crash the entire system (I can give
you an examples if you want). This is unacceptable under linux. You can
compare dosemu with WinNT dos session and dosemu will mostly win.
As a user, I also have to admit that some parts of dosemu are really not
maintained at all and it is sad. That is why when I felt need to use a special
backup hardware called arvid (www.arvid.ru) under dosemu and found it
unusable, I had only one choice: to start fixing it myself. Now I almost have
no problems using it (I am still hoping that Hans Lermen will accept my PIC
fixes, or using this hardware will not be possible for others).
The advantage of GPL soft is that you always have sources and encouraged
to do what you need with them.
PS: I apologize to dosemu team. Hope I did not offended anyone by this flame.
