I can't reproduce your font problem. Please try the following: /usr/bin/xdosemu (explicitly use /usr/bin) if that doesn't give you the right font then try, *after* running xdosemu, some commands, like this /usr/bin/xdosemu xlsfonts -fn vga xset q and please let me know what the output is.
