That's my point, I inserted the linux HD as the boot disk. I don't have a
floppy drive, (otherwise I would have inserted a normal DOS floppy and I
am all set). What is the single user mode?

Yeah, I guess the cannot open display error was when I typed in
X-windows/xterm etc etc. Now I rememeber, if I type dosemu or dos, it
just gives basically the same prompt like before. None of the like usual
DOS that i am used to.
