Hello Hans,
Thanks for the reply. I was going by these lines from the document
QuickStart:

The bootdir method, however, doesn't work if you use the DosC (FreeDos)
kernel, for this you have to use 'hdimages' and ./setup-hdimage. Have a
look
at ./doc/README.txt, chapter 2 and ./doc/README-tech.txt, chapter 7.)

Maybe I was wrong to think this means that FreeDOS cannot access the
C:\ drive defined by $_hdimage.
Moreover, I have actually attempted this:
dos -A # with FreeDOS Beta3 in A: drive
#result: dosemu runs and the directory defined as $_hdimage
#appears as the C:\ drove. The directory can be listed and
#its programs will run.
dos -A #with FreeDOS Beta4 in the A: drive
#result: dosemu runs, but the directory defined as $_hdimage
#cannot be accessed as the C:\drive. Below I list what happens.
C:\>dir
Volume in drive C has no label
File not found.
Have you attempted this with FreeDOS Beta3 and Beta4?
