The "recent changes" table at the standard compendium of modem info for Linux (at URL http://www.o2.net/~gromitkc/winmodem.html) lists the "SupraMax 56K PCI, Model 2260/2370, SM56IPC-XL1, Rockwell chipset" as an HSP modem ("Winmodem") that willl not work with Linux. The main table at the same site lists two other 2 "SupraMax 56K PCI" modems with different modem numbers. Status of both is "unknown" with respect to Linux compatability. I'd *guess* that they won't work, based on the fact that ALL PCI modems (with possibly one exception; see above URL for details) are HSP modems and do not work with Linux. That said, here are some things you can check to try to decide if your new modem will work with Linux: 1. Does the "system compatibility" list on the box mention it working with either WIn 3.1 or DOS? If so, it WILL work with Linux. Usually, a modem that will work ONLY with Win95/98/NT will NOT work with Linux. 2. If you put it in your system, does Linux detect it (as a serial port) during the boot process? 3. If you know what device it is on, can you detect it with setserial? (That is, if you run "setserial /dev/ttyS?", replacing ? with the appropriate number, does the return info include a UART type)? One more thing: this is not a kernel issue but a driver issue. There are no drivers in existence or being actively worked on to make any HSP modems work under any version of Linux. Someone else recently posted the name of a site (www.linmodem.org, I think) that runs a discussion list on HSP driver development, but that effort looks to be at too early a stage for us to know if it will succeed.
