Subject: Couple of NT problems with Samba 2.0
Date: Tue, 29 Dec 1998 16:13:03 GMT
I have two problems setting up samba (2.0 beta 4 )involving
WinNT on REDHAT 5.2:
Problem One:
When I run "net view \\linux" at the command prompt of
an NT 4.0 (SP4) server (it is the PDC and password server for
the samba box with encryption set to yes) I get this:

The command completed successfully.
At my Win95/98 workstations, I get the correct listing of shares:

Any ideas?
Problem Two:
I have a NT4.0 SP4 workstation who keeps asking for password everytime
I try to access the Linux box. Encryption is on in samba, security = domain.
The NT Server mentioned above as no problem, nor does any Win95/98 clients.
Any ideas?

Are the two machines on the same network and subnet?

Subject: NE2000 compatible - No Traffic
Hi out there,
I have the following problem :
I once had a small network between a linux and a win95 host. I used
two NE2000 compatible ISA Cards and everything was fine. Then my
motherboard crashed and I had to get a new one. But then the
NE 2000 Card did not come up like it used to, so I had to set the
irq and io port manually via jumpers. Okay, so far so good - but
even though ifconfig gives me a correctly configured ethernet card,
the connection between the win95 and linux is gone ...
Does anyone have an idea ? By the way, I checked the cables and stuff
they are still okay.
TIA,
Thomas
P.S.: could whoever answers send me the answer via e-mail ? gracias ...

Well, I'm not sure if this is the problem, but I read somewhere that
when trying to use multiple NICs, you need to *specify* the I/O port
and IRQ value. Autoprobe will only detect the first one, which is why
it's considered the non-recommended way of doing things in any case,
whether you have multiple cards or not. Also, I'd recommend
specifying ports and IRQs for *both* cards, thus avoiding the hassle
you could get into if it autodetects the card you're not expecting it
to, first. :)

This is what is known as a PCI NE2000 card. There is a kernel driver for the
PCI NE2000 use it.

First of all you need to study up on DNS configuration and MX records.
Second of all you need to study up on how to configure sendmail. Get the
corresponding books published by O'Reilly and associates.

Subject: Re: Problem setting up homenetwork with 3c509b.
Date: Tue, 29 Dec 1998 12:26:38 -0500
Well folks I'm not certain how much (if any...) help I'm going to be here
but I'll do my best...
The 3c509(B) as well as many other cards will work with Linux, just have
to be careful of some things...
First thing to keep in mind is that if you get ifconfig to show the card
you are more than halfway there, this can tend to be the hardest part
since with the card being PNP, and Linux having still some small problems
(purported, not MY experience with it...) supporting PNP bioses and
cards. You can IF you are having problems turn off PNP both in the bios
and the card and manually assign it, but this is the hard way... On the
other hand if IFCONFIG sees it then leave it alone and go now to either
Linuxconf, or startx and then click on Networking from the control
panel... Your card, which is called eth0: unless you have more than one,
or more to the point the machine needs an IP address at the least, and
name and a domain name before it will do ANYTHING with the card or the
network... Give it a NAME, IP ADDRESS, AND A DOMAIN NAME it is part of
and you should be up and running...
Scott...
P.S.
Just to make sure I'm clear here, I'm running a 3c509B in this machine
right now, which while most of the time is my server (www.tech-test.com) I
run X11 on to much about and to test web sites with something TOTALLY
non-Microsoft. I dropped the card in, booted from the 5.2 install CDROM
and ran a nice clean normal install and it saw the card first shot,
BUT I STILL had to give my machine a name and address before it would do
anything... Drop me a line if you get stuck...

Check your /etc/resolv.conf and make sure it's got the nameservers for
your ISP. it may have been rewritten when you upgraded RH. It should
look something like this:
domain yourispdomain.com
nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx are the nameservers for your isp.

The problem is your modem. It's a winmodem, which means that the actual
modem itself is basically nothing more than a phone jack connected to a pc
board. All of the functionality of the modem is provided through software
that runs under windoze. They usually work nice in win95, but they won't
work worth a lick in any other OS. In short, your only option is to get
a new modem.

SAINT is an updated version of SATAN that has no trouble on Linux,
as well as a bunch of new code. Search the bugtraq archives for a URL

Well honestly you need to do a bit more than just add the card and fire up
the driver... I WAS running the D-Link 220PCT ISA card in my server before
I upgraded, and it was a bit more work than the 3c509 I'm running in my new
server (the machine I write this from) but it certainly WILL work... If
you type ifconfig and the card shows attached to eth0: then the rest is
cake from here... What no one it appears has told you yet is that you need
MORE than just the card and driver to a network make... Each machine
MUST BE assigned (DHCP or manually) and IP ADDRESS, a host name, and a
domain name. The HOST name and IP adddress MUST be unique on each machine,
and the domain name SHOULD be the same if you want them to talk to each
other simply... Once you set this information up (use Linuxconf,
networking) or goto the control panel under X and click on netwroking to
set this information and you should be fine... In win95/98NT it's for the
most part the SAME thing, Control Panel, Networks, give them and IP, NAME
and a DOMAIN if you have installed the TCP/IP protocal and you'll be on the
way...

Try the Linux-HOWTO pages at www.linux-howto.com there is a PPP-HOWTO
there. Also look at RedHat's website they used to have a really great
doc on setting up PPP through the GUI Network Config tool (netcfg). If
you're familiar with PPP you might even be able to figure it out in the
NETCFG tool. Run it from X-windows and take a look.
Good luck!

these math coprocessors will never work...
because the human cpu and the ram can not be overclocked, not even at
100mhz
silicium based fpu's are inaccurate for low speed bio-cpu's
and an fpu bus buffer would not have the necessary capacity ( ~ 1 GB )

There isn't a whole lot of information here. You are mentioning a 'symptom'
that is usually associated with invalid reverse DNS entries - some sites
use TCP wrappers which will enforce that your IP address maps to a valid
dns name, and that that dns name maps back to that same IP adress. But you
also said that a popular web site wasn't accessible either (and I am
assuming that this popular web site would be smart enough to turn this
feature off in order to increase their visibility and target audience). Can
you check your reverse dns for accuracy?

Worse yet, they don't offer POP mailboxes. So, you are stuck with their
horrible mail system.

Hello!
I am currently experiencing some problems using eql......I have
perused through all the documentation that I can find and here are the
questions that I need addressed:
1) Do you have to have two ppp connections with the same IP?
2) How do I get rid of the default route to my ppp connections?
3) if I enslave two ppp connections, how come I'm still only routing
through one ppp connection?
Thanks in advance!
Sincerely,
Brian Gilman
