Our company switched to an NT machine to serve as a gateway to the
internet.
I can communicate perfectly inside our internal network, as well as on
the external (when I'm wired up outside the gateway), but I cannot get
through the Micro$oft gateway...
I've been told that it is the MS system that refuses to let any other OS
through.. (dunno..)
Anybody know how to fool the NT system into letting my linux box speak
to the outside world?

You probably know that there are profiles for every user. The default
user is _default (i think). Search your user folder of netscape users
and change to the directory of the user (default: _default). In this
folder you will see a folder called 'cache' delete its content.
But there is also a history-file (Enter in Adress-field: about:global).
To delete this, simply delete the netscape.hst file in the netscape
directory.

Reply-To: Kolbjorn Bekkelund <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
I am using a ZyXEL Omni TA128 for my ISDN ppp-dialup connection.
I do not have any ethernet cards or other local network interf.
I use it along with my Red Hat 5.2 powered Compaq Armada 1592, and with
ppp-2.2.0f. Yes, 2.2.0f, because anything newer, let`s say 2.3.5, let me
dial up OK,
get me logged in and assinged to an IP-adr., but then things starts to
go the wrong way:
I can not ping anything else than my dynam. assigned IP-adr. and my own
localhost.
Any pings to the outside world, including my ISP`s DNS leads to 100%
packet loss.
If I connect to my ISP via my analog USR Sportster 28800 with the same
setup (except for adj. in the modem init-string),
everything works just fine with ppp-2.3.x.
My routing table is OK for all the different setups. The only
significant difference to notice is that when I use "netstat -r"
it takes about a minute before it displays any results when I am using
ppp-2.3.x, but it displays promptly when ppp-2.2.0f
is used. It also resolves the remote IP-adr. and displays the name in
the table when "netstat -r" is used instead of the IP-adr.
which is the result with the same command when using ppp-2.3.x.
This was much info, but this problem prevents me from using other
kernels than 2.0.xx, because 2.1-kernels want deal
with ppp-2.2.x. Any clues here.

First off... Great job on pissing a lot of people in this newsgroup off.
Way to go. Piss enough of them off and they might actually notice that they
can bitch to [EMAIL PROTECTED] .. And probably will.
Anyways, Since you're so damned impatient to install RH linux, you need to
do the following things: (And you WILL need to work at this a bit.. I'm not
going to source out all the damned directory trees for you and tell you
EXACTLY where everything is)
1) Ftp to one of RedHat's mirror ftp sites (I don't think they allow ftp to
them anymore.) If you need a mirror location, visit RedHat's site and find
one yourself.
2) Download the disk image files. There are three of them. (You only need
two to install, the third is a rescue disc. You'll probably need it in the
future.)
3) Use the utility you also downloaded (don't remember the filename and I
don't care.. I figured this stuff out on my own and you should be able to
also) and use it to make the floppys you'll need. (I believe the 3 images
are "boot" "supplimental" and "rescue" .. don't remember exactly)
4) Boot the "boot" disc and follow the instructions. You'll need some basic
stuff about your machine (Your i.p.#, dns #'s and stuff like that. Pull
those from windows before you reboot.)
If you have a cdrom burner, look for the Mandrake distribution.. You can
download the complete iso image and burn it to cd.. And it's based off RH
5.2 and has everything you need.
If you can't get it from here.. Tough.

I've recently being trying to get my Linux box act as a dial manager for
my internet connection, and have run into some trouble when not using X.
X works fine, as does ifup ppp0, but when I try the following, I have
problems.
I'm using pppd (ie, pppd :10.0.0.2 to give it a 'fake' address and then
accept any that are given to me) to set up a connection (soon to be by
demand dialling, but at the moment, my version doesn't support it) via
the /etc/ppp/options file which contains:
debug
demand # I know this won't work, but this isn't the problem
idle 1800
ipcp-accept-remote
ipcp-accept-local
lock
noauth # I've also tried to comment this out
defaultroute
user ******* # This lines up with the first line in my
# pap-secrets file... Is this correct ??
remotename ozemail.com.au # presumably ok ??
/dev/ttyS0 57600 crtscts
connect '/usr/sbin/chat -v -f /etc/ppp/call-isp'

You normaly get this error message when the x-server configuration is
incorrect. So in most cases you installed the wrong x-server or you choose
wrong startparameters (first try out a small resoulution and color depth and
then slowly increase).

Make sure you have pppd2.3 (or the latest) I needed to recompile the
kernel and the new pppd It all worked well after that.

I think this is a problem with the rights of the user on a dos partion. As I
know the dos partion don't support unix attributes like rw or ro. So in this
case unix does a translation between the dos attributes and the unix
attributes. Try out something like forceuser=XXXX (see smb.conf man page) to
say samba that all access to this share will done by user xy.

Date: Mon, 4 Jan 1999 13:38:04 +0100
Hi Darcy,
the answer is simple and complex together. At the first point you has to
decide which applications should run on this network. So after this you can
say how much power your network need. If you just have to transfer a few
files from host A to host B you normaly choose a twisted pair network with a
8 Port Hub supporting 10Mbit/s. You can also use a BNC cable to connect the
computers, the disadvantage is that can not upgrade these type of network to
the next generation of fast ethernet. If you want to run a server wich
should export a x-server for complex graphical operations you should decide
a fast ethernet working with 100MBit/s. The cable is the same like the
twisted pair network with 10MBit/s. You only take other Hubs and ethernet
cards.
In fact I can tell you more about the requirements if you post a detailed
list of service you want to use in your network.

I have 2 network cards in the firewall machine. The first (eth0) is
connected to the internal 100MB network. The second (eth1) is connected to a
Cisco 2503 router via a crossover cable. The Cisco ethernet side has the
address 193.123.234.145. My IP network as provided by my IP is
193.123.234.144/24. The eth1 device is assigned 193.123.234.146. The eth0
device is assigned 192.168.2.60. The rest of the internal network is using
various addresses from the 192.168.2.0 net range. From the firewall machine
I can ping the 192 network and also the Cisco. From the internal network I
can also ping the eth1 card. Unfortunately, I can't ping the Cisco from the
internal network. I have set up the routing table using the route command,
but it doesn't appear that anything is being routed from the 192 network to
the 193 network other than to the single card on the firewall. I am at a
complete loss here, since it seems that this is the only problem left
standing in the way of everything working (at least until I start
configuring the packet filtering rules and the squid stuff ;-)
The routing table is show below:

Macafees product is for NT / WIN95/98 only .
It doesnt mean however that you cant use it with linux , as it needs to run on
a separate machine anyway, and it simply intercepts any connections to port 25,
ie sendmail , scans the data for viruses and then forwards the scanned data to
the real SMTP server.
It requires that you are able to change your MX records to point to the virus
scanning machine.
They do have a free demo that runs for 30 days.
I have tried it with linux and it works OK.
It would be a hell of a lot nicer if sendmail would do the virus scanning
itself , but this would require a large virus database which would have to
supplied by someone for free, unlikely I guess.

Samba to security=user. The problem was that NT was trying to use
encrypted password (it never asked for the logon). The solution that I
used was to edit the Registry and tell it to enable plain text password.
In this folder of the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\CurrentControlSet\Services\rdr\parameters\
add this DWord entry:
EnablePlainTextPassword: 1
I understand another approach might be to tell Samba to use encrypted
passwords. Maybe someone else can provide the details on this.
