Having a DNS server will not make your site available to the public. A
DNS simply tells people how to find related sites once they have reached
your DNS. The trick to having an internet presence is to get listed in a
DNS somewhere else.
In some cases, the ISP does this even if they don't tell you. In order to
keep their own network topology understandable, many ISPs use a discrete
computer-geek address to identify your machine. My ISP uses my ethernet
MAC address (essentially a digital serial number) and their domain name
unless I access a web "login" page that replaces the geeky name with an
english domain name.
If your ISP uses DHCP to assign addresses dynamically, you will have to
find a dynamic DNS service so that your domain name points to your new
address every time it changes. There is a DDNS server at www.dhis.org
that serves the Linux community.

Yes. I'm doing it now. The Linux firewall does IP masquerading so that
all of the machines connected to it appear to have the same address when
viewed from the outside world. All of your machines can connect outward,
but incoming connections can only go to the firewall machine. The DNS is
useful for configuring your private network and for caching data from the
rest of the world to make your network slightly faster. It won't make the
rest of your machines available to the internet unless you get more IPs.
If you really need to divide the work load between several machines, one
option is to install an IP forwarding service on the firewall machine.
That would reroute specific types of incoming connections to the "hidden"
machines.
If you are restricted to one IP, the normal network topology is to install
two network cards in the Linux machine. One card connects to the ADSL
modem while the other is connected to a hub or coax cable that feeds the
rest of your machines.

Ok here it is. I installed RH 6.0, Mandrake 6.0, and COL 2.2. I can't
get any of them to work on internet if I install network support. I've
tried every class of IP . If I install without network support Internet
works fine on each except COL 2.2 which is a different matter. What am
I doing wrong? Is it best to install without network support and add
later. The network works great with Win98.

I don't see any such thing as a DFE-50TX. Do you maybe mean DFE-530TX?
If so, I have been having MUCH trouble getting this to go. During boot,
as soon as the driver loads, the system hangs, just after giving a
cryptic message--i.e. (from /var/log/messages):
kernel: via-rhine.c:v1.00 9/5/98 Written by Donald Becker
kernel: http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/via-rhine.html
kernel: via-rhine.c:v1.00 9/5/98 Written by Donald Becker
kernel: http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/via-rhine.html
kernel: eth0: VIA VT3043 Rhine at 0x6100, 00:80:c8:e1:03:b6, IRQ 10.
kernel: eth0: MII PHY found at address 8, status 0x7809 advertising
05e1 Link 0000.
kernel: PCI latency timer (CFLT) is unreasonably low at 32. Setting
to 64 clocks.
(I'm running SuSE 6.1 (2.2.7) on an old Pentium 200MHz system.) I've
tried both the driver that came with the SuSE system and a newer version
downloaded from http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/via-rhine.c
The only difference in behavior that I see is that the new driver only
introduces itself once instead of twice (as above).
So, if you ARE using a DFE-530TX, and you are successful in getting it
to work, could you let me know? The SuSE people could only guess that
maybe my problems had to do with the fact that the card is supposed to
be in a "bus master" slot, according to comments, but my BIOS or other
documentation doesn't seem to make it clear how to ensure this.
Anyway, any help (from anyone) would be appreciated.
Thanks,
-Dave

HELP !!!
I am trying to send emails from my computer. I have a PPP account with
dynamic IP.
>From what I understand, the PPP server as a name for every IP it
assigns. When I set `hostname' to correspond to that name, everything
works fine, but if I use the name I choose for the computer (`equus')
then the mail hub I am using refuse my mails :
451 <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>... unresolvable host name
equus.dial.uottawa.ca, see RFC 1123, sections 5.2.2 and 5.2.18.
This may also be linked to the firewall that the university is using...
Is there a solution to this?
Please help I already spent too much time on this to give up now, but
it's driving me nuts.
