Is that, you just need to install the nmbd in the samba package for other
machines to see you in the network?

Our company switched to an NT machine to serve as a gateway to the
internet.
I can communicate perfectly inside our internal network, as well as on
the external (when I'm wired up outside the gateway), but I cannot get
through the Micro$oft gateway...
The network runs with workgroups, not domains, with TCP/IP, so I should
think setting up the correct gateway+nameserver would have been
sufficient....

I've been told that it is the MS system that refuses to let any other OS

through.. (dunno..)
Anybody know how to fool the NT system into letting my linux box speak
to the outside world? Or perhaps how to get the NT system to accept
Linux as a legitimate client?

I remember reading a while back that SOCKS can only pass on Passive ftp
requests - the server makes no return connection to your local machine which
SOCKS will not allow. Your FTP software may autodetect this and use passive
transfer - your browser probably can't.

Just a guess!

I can't seem to get my FTP client to work through IP masquerading. I am
running Red Hat 5.1 and trying to use Cute FTP on my Win 95 machine. I
can log in to the server, but it won't accept the LIST command. It just
freezes.

Is there a way around this?

Please help,

The only way of doing this (the way you want to do it) is to run a SOCKS
proxy on your NT server.

You can find socks at http://www.socks.nec.com

Of course, if you want to do it the non-retarded way, you can set up an IP
masquerading firewall on linux, and do the same thing but have the following
benefits:

1) Faster
2) Free
3) TOTALLY transparent, you don't have to install some bogus client on every
workstation, just use the Linux box as the default route.

You can find a good HOWTO on IP Firewalling/Masquerading with Linux at
http://www.flounder.net/firewalling.txt

You should check out the description of scheme support in the

You want to do one of two things:

  (1) Set your FTP client to use "passive" (PASV) mode.

  (2) Use the module which enables use of non-passive mode ftp clients
      though the firewall:

        /sbin/depmod -a
        /sbin/modsbrobe ip_masq_ftp.o

I do #2 by sticking the first two commands in /etc/rc.d/rc.local

There is no way to make the Redhat box use WINS by default. What you CAN do
is put all of the workstations you need to connect to in your local
/etc/hosts file.

If you are using SAMBA, there is a utility called "nmbd" which will allow
you to send broadcasts in order to lookup NetBIOS names, but nothing that
will use a WINS server AFAIK. WINS is an incredibly broken protocol anyway,
which is why M$ is ditching it in NT 5.0.

Yes, set your client to use PASV mode and enable firewall access. This is
configured in the "Firewall" option in CuteFTP Setup.

If you are using linux FTP, type "passive". If you are using another OS,
you may have to download a new FTP client that supports passive connections.

For Webphone you would add a couple of ipautofw rules like..

ipautofw -A -r tcp 21845 21845 -h xx.xx.xx.xx:21845
ipautofw -A -r udp 21845 21845 -h xx.xx.xx.xx:21845

Of course replace the xx.xx.xx.xx with the Internal IP ad that you wish to
redirect too.

Just type 'ipautofw' on its own at the prompt for a list of options/help ?

I've set up wu-ftpd on RedHat 5.1 and am logging in as a real user.

/etc/inetd.conf ->  ftp stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/tcpd in.ftpd -l -a
/etc/passwd -> janssenL:<password>:500:500:l a j ,,:/home/janssenL:/bin/bash
/etc/ftpaccess -> upload /home/janssenL /home/janssenL yes root root 0666

I can login and download from any directory on the machine, but when I try to
upload (to my home directory), I get "permission denied". What have I left out?

Thanks in advance,

Now, with samba 2.0.0b5, that problem is solved. But now I loose some
of my mount after a while. They disappear leaving an error message in
/var/log/messages: "kernel: smb_retry: signal failed, error=-3".

Those that disappear are mounted from different versions of NT with
security=user (have to give a passwd). Tried to give the passwd on
the command line and at smbmount's prompt - no difference. The only
smbmount that doesn't disappear is the one that comes from another
linux box with security=share.
