As I said, I won't be able to help with Linux stuff. You will need an
IPX-based client in order to log into the NetWare server, however. NetWare
4.x does NOT support IP login, except when NetWare/IP is installed (at a
server somewhere). And then you must have a NetWare/IP client as well.
That's because NetWare/IP encapsulates IPX inside IP packets.

Brief lecture: In order to login to NetWare, you must have client access
to NCP (NetWare Core Protocol). Prior to NetWare 5, which supports NCP
over IP (i.e., "Pure IP"), you had to access a NetWare server via IPX.
Period.

Back to the subject at hand. With that version of NetWare, you almost
certainly will not be able to configure DHCP to provide any support for
NetWare login. Sorry. Wish I could be more help.

Hello,

You can use a service call HedgeBuilders. It is basically a proxy type
service provided by this group concerned with filtering problems on the
Internet. They use I-Gear software which is available for Linux (if you
want to buy a very expensive package there you are). In my case
Hedgebuilders is great because I avoid the maintenance problem, i.e.,
updating files and the like. Their address is: www.hedgebuilders.org.
The service is 5 dollars per computer filtered, but 1 dollar per
computer if you are an educational institution.

Good luck,

The ISP sends an empty IPCP configure-request when it should send the

Set the pppd option :192.168.0.1 and the ISP should let you use
192.168.0.1 for it's IP-address . It's a reserved address but it will
usually work as the remote address for the PPP link to the ISP without
causing any problems.

Date: Tue, 06 Jul 1999 01:23:00 GMT

I can't connect using smbclient to a Win98 client but I can connect to a
Win95a computer. My Win95 computer is called 'ricardo' and my Win98 one
is called 'zanity'. Here's a sample of what I did:

It connects fine to a service on 'ricardo':

shadow:/# smbclient '\\ricardo\c'
Added interface ip=192.168.0.1 bcast=192.168.0.255 nmask=255.255.255.0
Got a positive name query response from 192.168.0.3 ( 192.168.0.3 )
Password:
smb: \> q
shadow:/#

But it doesn't work when I try to connect to 'zanity':

shadow:/# smbclient '\\zanity\c'
Added interface ip=192.168.0.1 bcast=192.168.0.255 nmask=255.255.255.0
session request to ZANITY failed
session request to *SMBSERVER failed
shadow:/#

This is sooo frustrating!! Anyone have this happen to them? I can
connect fine *from* zanity to the linux computer, but I can't connect
*to* the linux machine from zanity. Also, the linux machine pings to
zanity without problems. I get the same problem when I try to use the
IP address instead of 'zanity'.

Please help!!!

I also have had similar problems trying to get Win98 to see my Linux
server. Everything seems to work fine with ping and telnet, and I can
even mount the shared directories of Win98 on the Linux box with
smbmount or smbclient. However, I just can NOT get Win98 to log into
the Linux box. Win98 DOES see the Linux box through network
neighborhood and I can get password boxes, but no password I put in is
correct. I have set up a smb-user and set it's password but I can not
get it to allow me to connect regardless of what I do. I can't even
log into the Linux box FROM the localhost.

I have set the smb.conf to use encrypted passwords, but I have not
tried the registry hack because that appeared to be to turn off
password encryption which seems to be counter-productive. As well, all
the NT domain stuff just seems to be WAY above what I need. I just
wanted to get everything working so I can start up IP Masquerading for
a cable modem.

I honestly have no clue what to do now. I have seen a BUNCH of people
posting questions about this stupid password verification problem with
SAMBA and I realize that it's pretty newbie-ish but I'm totally
stumped and I would REALLY appreciate any help. I can post my smb.conf
if needed.

Thanx SOO much in advance,

Loch

It should work, but often does not. Very rarely am I able to make a smb
connection over a ppp dial-up connect (I have succeeded about 3 times), but
I do have a friend with a cable modem who has no problem connecting with smb
to remote servers. The connection is very slow though. SMB does not appear
to work well over a slow connection. There may be ways to tweak Samba to
improve this, but I don't know how.

I've installed SuSE 6.1 five days ago and have problems with ppp.
When I use minicom to dial, it works, dials, nagotiate connection, plays
little tune and says "CONNECTED 57600". Great...
Then it trys to send user/password informations and it takes waaayy toooooo
loooong till finnaly fails. Sometimes I can even see "Starting PPP" but
thats it, and some crazy characters fillup the screen.
Ok., let's try kppp, wvdial or whatever... But they can't even recognize
modem.
(It is ISA PnP 56k V.90 ZOOM faxmodem - not Winmodem!).
Back to xterm, run minicom, only initialize modem, than run kppp (or other
dialer)...
Now they work and set up speaker volume, dial, nagotiate communications...
GREAT...
but wait... oh no! Failure again....
Ok. I'm not quiter!
Boot NT and go online, see what IRC offers...
Nothing.... Only bunch of guys who have heard about something
called "fdisk" and "partition"...
Anyway, let's surf and investigate, internet is so huge...
There must be something....
Check ZOOM site..
Try Altavista...
Try Yahoo...
......
....
..
.
This is about what I was doing lest few days and now I must admit that
I am frustrated...
Can anyone help me? I have tried to modify scripts, I've tried a lot
differnt things like changing strings in kppp with what I've taken from
*.INF or what ever I could find online that was for ZOOM modems, and now
I've no clue where to look anymore...
Please help, help help....

Ok, I've got a Linux Box as a gateway/firewall with IP MASQ
set up to serve four windows boxes. The Linux box is set to dial
on demand (Diald).

The problem is with my NT machine (and probably with the two other
WIN95 OSR2 boxes as well, put I've left them off the hub for now).

After cleaning out all the TCP/IP stuff that Windows sends out, which
"wakes up" the linux box, I've got one last problem. As soon as I
log in to NT, it sends out a ping (ICMP:Echo request) to each DNS
listed on the network setup. This triggers diald to dial into my
ISP everytime.

Why does it ping? It didn't when it dialed in manually, otherwise
I'd get that dial internet request box everytime I log in.

How can I disable this "feature"? (which is my preferred
action)
Barring that, how can I set the diald config to ignore ICMP Echo
Requests? I didn't see echo's in the diald.defs file.

I see the same behavior with any kernel v2.2.x and v2.3.x (through 9).
Also, Proxy arp *doesn't* work. No matter what I do. I have checked with
a sniffer. The Linux box receives the ARP request, and *ignores* it.

Here's my situation. I have two networks.

   Public 170.1.15.129/27 eth0
  Private 192.160.130.0/24 eth1

I have NAT enabled on my box (special patches, not part of stock kernel)

ipnatadm -i -O -P all -W eth0 -S 192.168.130.100/32 -D 0.0.0.0/0 -M 170.1.15.150 -o
ipnatadm -i -I -P all -W eth0 -S 0.0.0.0/0 -D 170.1.15.150/32 -N 192.168.130.100/32 -o

I used my IRIX box (170.1.15.140) to provide the Proxy ARP:

arp -s nat1 00:60:97:09:14:97 pub

This works. It works great. BTW, I also tested IP MASQ (stock), and
it works too.

I delete the IRIX proxy arp, then pull out the Proxy ARP howto, and type in:

arp -i eth0 -Ds nat1 eth0 pub

And I get from 'arp -a'

nat1.strangehaven.com (170.1.15.150) at * PERM PUP on eth0

(postscript: What the h*ll is a PUP? Is this supposed to be PUBlish? )

Rather than (on the IRIX box):

nat1.strangehaven.com (170.1.15.150) at 00:60:97:09:14:97 pub

Back in the 0.99.x days, I used to use Proxy ARP to 'steal' IP
addresses from the University. I thought Proxy ARP would be easy to
setup, but it just doesn't work. I've checked the version of net-tools,
and I've compiled and used 2.2.5, 2.2.6 and 2.3.9 trying to find one
that works. To date I have not gotten Linux to Proxy ARP.

It's screwed up that my old IRIX box supports this without a problem.
If it didn't, I'd be checking my head into a hospital right about now.

Can some networking/kernel person tell me what's up? Am I really doing
things wrong? I'm going to try to start tracing stuff back into the
kernel now.

Just a few steps. I assume since you are using RPMS that you have RedHat. If
so, run linuxconf and go under "config -> networking -> misc -> info. about other
hosts". Add the IP of the Wintel machine (along with the other host info such as
name, etc.). Try FTP again. If it still doesn't work, go download Samba (I
think you can find it on www.samba.org). Install the RPM and follow the
directions on running the daemon(s). Setup Samba and Windows Networking
(Microsoft Networking). You should be able to transfer files via Network
Neighborhood. If you decide to use Samba, write back, because it isn't the
easies thing to configure.

I'm having all kinds of problems getting my 3Com Etherlink III 3C589D nic to
work with Slackware 4.0 I'm also using a rebuilt kernel 2.3.8.

The pcmcia driver on my laptop is a PCI system which allocates irqs on
demand. My system is a Thinkpad 380XD and I have had 3 versions of Redhat
beginning with 5.0 successfully running without any problem whatsoever. I
also have also double checked the nic by booting into Win 98 where I can
reach all network resources without a problem. However, when I boot (hard
or soft) into Linux the card beeps high then low. When I eject the card and
replace it I get a netdev_config error or something of the like. I've not
found any reference to the error in usenets or in any man file.

I've compiled and installed the latest pcmcia-cs3.06 driver.
I've read the PCMCIA-HOWTO. I've tried the standard fixes mentioned in
usenet, specifically:

Made sure that I have a correct entry for the card in etc/pcmcia/config
Tried various memory and irq commenting in etc/pcmcia/config.opts without
any change.

Any help is much appreciated. I like Slack much better and would like to
stay - but I need me network.

Well, I know that pppd doesn't properly reset the original device file
line. I also know that because of this stty and certain other programs
cannot access the device file after pppd runs but can do so after using
minicom with Alt-q (or after reboot). But this is the first time I've
seen a post where the incorrectly reset line attributes seem to have
caused pppd itself a problem.

In any case the file

http://www.inetport.com/~kite/pppd-main.c.diff.gz

is a pppd diff for ppp-2.3.8 that can be used as a patch to get pppd
to correctly reset the device file line attributes. If you apply the
patch, do Alt-q in minicom, and then run the patched pppd, upon exit it
will reset the attributes to the ones that minicom uses. Whether this
solves your problem is another question.

BTW the pppd option is defaultroute, not -defaultroute as you show above.

I have a new, Red Hat 6 installation and I'm tring to NFS mount a fs

my problems seem to be confined to the client.

Problem 1: mount -t nfs fails with a mount: fs type nfs not supported
by kernel error. SHouldn't kerneld or whatever replaces it in the 2.2
kernel series just load /lib/modules/2.2.5/fs/nfs.o?

Problem 2: modprobe nfs fails with the error "conf:2: missing module
argement" (Presumably fixing this will fix Prob 1.) I can't find any
documentation in the kernel source (or the NFS HOWTO, which seems to
only know about 2.0 kernels) for module options to nfs.o.

Any suggestions are appreciated.
