Also see on your windows machines: c:\windows\networks.txt and search for the
string "SAMBA". It tells you how to disable encryped passwords in Windoze
machines, which is the easiest route if your not worried about security.

stop If pnpdump doesnt see it, it's not a pnp device or it *is* a winmodem.
The fact that it can run in dos doesn't necessarily meant its not a winmodem,
as many cheap winmodem's make that claim, but what they really mean is it will
run in a dos box under windoze.

work with it. Is there a driver out there that will recognize

How does it make it more secure? The only possible extra security
that you get is that you have to crack two passwords if you're going
to use the password-cracking method to get in. If you're going to use
the network sniffing method to get in, then the "su" method is no more
secure, you just end up giving away two passwords instead of one.
"ssh" is easy to set up and very secure, relatively speaking.

While setting up the Linux box to do the dialing is evidently the best bet
performance- and stability-wise, you can use a proxy with Win95 instead -
check http://www.winfiles.com/apps/98/servers-proxy.html for a list of some
available.

during installation I specified not the lpd printer but the network printer
(sorry cannot recall what terminology is used exactly) I just specified the
IP address of the win98 box. it printed fine from Xwindows.

I am using X-Win32 on a Win95 PC trying to connect to a RedHat 5.1 system.
Whenever I try to start an X application I get connection refused after I
enter my userid and password. I tried rsh as well as rexec.

If I telnet in, then start the application sending it back to the remote pc
via "-display" it works. If log in directly to the RedHat 5.1 server and
send the application back to the remote pc via "-display" it works.

I have open the system up in /etc/securetty and /etc/security/access.conf
but no luck.

Any Ideas?

running as well. This happens if I
use any TCP utility (rsh, ftp,
telnet, rlogin) but not with UDP (my
http server is stiill responding as
normal). I have no problems
telneting out of my computer, only
telneting in. Even if I telnet to
myself it doesn't work. I have also

Masquerading disguises all packets originated in your local network
to the internet. It makes your ISP think that all internet stuff is
requested by the Linux box, not the windos boxes.
Assuming your local network is 1.2.3.x you might want to try this as
root:

# ipfwadm -F -i m -S 1.2.3.0/24 -D 0/0

Hello to you all,

After almost two weeks I solved the problem with setting up my network.
Thank to this newsgroup I found it.

The problem is that the NIC's have to be configured correctly. If, like
me you don't have Dos or Windows installed on the computer with your
NIC.

This is the way I dealt with it.
I download a program from ftp://ftp.3com.com called 3c509x2.exe.
Make a win95 startupdisk.(if you have a dos bootdisk you can skip this)
Boot the disk.
Start 3c509x2.exe which fills the current directory with other programs.

Copy 5x9cfg.exe to a other disk and run it from there.

I used the option auto configure, which changed the I/O address from
330h to 300h (problem looks small but it took me 10 days to figure it
out )
Tried the test which worked out fine.
Rebooted Linux and my network was working. (heeeehhhaaaaa).

I would like to thank everybody for the tips they gave me specially the
one with the golden tip.

Greetings
