One more small question. I don't know if this is a bug in samba or not. Samba
reports an incorrect amount of disk free space to a mapped drive letter in winnt
4.0. I have an 8.8gig drive mapped to D: (dev/sda1) but it only says I have
3.99gigs free. I've added about 1.5gigs to drive D: and it still says 3.99gigs
free. When I run df on the samba host it reports the correct amount of free
space.
I mapped another drive letter to the root dir of my linux box with the samba
host, which is on a different hd (dev/sdc1). Samba reports the disk free space
correctly for this drive - 470MB.
Maybe I didn't format the scsi 8.8GB drive correctly. I made a primary ext2
partion with fdisk and then called "mkfs -t ext2 -c /dev/sda1" This is the
standard way to format a linux drive isn't it?

If your looking for a book, try "LINUX Network Toolkit" by Paul G. Sery. It does a
good job of setting up a Linux server from installation to tweaking for
performance. It's centered around SAMBA.

Whilst this obnoxious person has been winding everyone up, there has
been mention of what his ISP would think of his antics. Assuming he uses
an ISP. I just pointed my browser at www.hdtv.com and it turns out to be
a company called Image Circuits, consulting engineers specializing in
the design of digital video systems. There is no mention of providing an
Internet Service, so it would appear that he is an employee. Perhaps
the management of Image Circuits would be interested?!

I think I may have the same problem. My ppp just quit working.
tonight. First it started acting very slow in looking up nameservers
(it transfered data fine once it found a site), then after a restart
of X it just didn't work anymore. I'm using xisp to dia, but I also
tried the basic scripts to start it. Nothing. It dials the ISP,
negotiates the login, gets the IP nos... but I can't get anything to
see the ppp tcpip stack.
I have four machines on my little network and run samba on the three
Linux boxes. I suspected samba was the culprit, but I stopped SMB and
the problem continued.
Does anyone know what this problem is? I sure need the help.

My problem: I'm running RH 2.1.130 (i needed a newer kernel then
production because I have a 16750 high speed serial board in my computer, and
the 2.0.36 kernel serial.c doesnt support this UART). Anyway, I configured my
kernel for ip-masquerading, as well as firewalls. When I try to use ipfwadm I
get the following errors:
/sbin/ipfwadm -O -f
error msg: ipfwadm: setsockopt failed: Protocol not available
/sbin/ipfwadm -I -f
error msg: ipfwadm: setsockopt failed: Invalid argument

error msg: ipfwadm: setsockopt failed: No such file or directory
/sbin/ipfwadm -F -a deny -P udp -S 0.0.0.0/0 137:139
etc, etc, ad nauseum! It would appear that I either have an old version of
ipfwadm, or something isn't correctly configured in my kernel. Do you have
any clues as to what is wrong?

I think we might be getting somewhere. I wrote a mail to Dauphintech and got
back the name of the chipset used by the DTR-1. It is called AT/LANTIC
chipset # DP83905AVQB.
I then searched a bit with Infoseek and found the following link:
http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/setup/atlantic.html
Apparently a Linux program exists to configure this chipset, but I will have
to install the gcc compiler on my other pc in order to try this out.
This just may work though, so I will get on to it as soon as possible. I
intend to use my DTR-1 as a firewall. It should be capable of maintaining af
link with an ISP at a max of 43Kbps and forward the data to the other pc's
on my homework using the netcard.
I will let you know when I progress.....
Rgds.

"demand" may not work for newer distribution like RH 5.2. The kernel
support has been removed. But "idle" still works.

A) I can't log on from the Win95 machines using Client for Microsoft Networks
except for the root account equivalent..
B) I can't log in from the linux server using any account other than root.
Hope someone can help me. I'm so close to getting this to work.
Oh - for some reason the Win95 desktop doesn't want to cache properly to the
profiles share. I get a "unable to create directory.maybe your share does not
support long filenames" or some such error. Not sure why this is. the USER.DAT
file gets created but nothing else seems to.
In case it makes a difference, I have an NT box on the same network and if I
try to log in to the Samba domain, it complains that it can't find the
domain.
Hope this helps.
Don't know if that helps anyone figure out my problem or not.

I've been happily using a couple of FA310TX cards and a Netgear hub to
link a Windows NT workstation to a Linux fileserver since November
1998. The cards I have do not appear to have a real DEC chip --
nothing says DEC, nothing stamped with a number that looks like one of
the standard tulip chip numbers. Yet this has nevertheless been about
the most trouble-free hardware I have ever used! Of course, I opted
to take precautions (which included *not* doing a DejaNews search,
since I didn't want to scare myself).
When I first got the cards, I read their warning about using their own
driver, so I downloaded the latest drivers from Netgear (their URL is
http://netgear.baynetworks.com/support/). They claim to officially
support their own variation of the Linux driver (though I didn't
actually try their support since I didn't need it). I followed their
instructions for installing it, and haven't had an iota of trouble.
Their tulip.c driver is based on (and GPL'ed like) the stock driver,
but appears to be a branch from an earlier version than the one from
Redhat 5.2 which I compared it to.
Happy computing!

i have exactly this problem (or at least one that manifests exactly
this way), and may have an idea what it is.
after two days spent playing with the system and talking to my isp,
our current working hypothesis is that, while pppd supports synchronous
ppp, the isdn modem is using two channels and talking asynchronous
ppp. in one or anther of the howto's and faq's we found reference to
a need for a 'patched' ipppd to support asynchronous ppp.
if i plug a phone into one of the jacks on the back of my isdn modem
(3comImpact IQ) and take the receiver off the hook, i disable one of the
channels (possibly disabling async ppp, or possibly just reducing the
chance of a missed async message), and ping works, albeit erratically.
hang up the receiver, and ping stops in mid-stride when the second
channel kicks back in.
hope this helps. if this rings any bells for anyone, i'd like to hear
about it.
