ftpd on @home Cable line
Problem 1.. only one routing table
Problem 2.. @home uses dhcp.. so my ip changes (although P 1
is my main concern)
any ideas how i can set this up??
i don't wanna have to set up a second
machine just for cable.
Any Ideas?

I know you can hook a hub to a cable modem and then connect the pc's off
of the hub. My friend did that and I found that you had to connect the
cable modem to the hub using the uplink port with a standard ethernet
cable (cat3 or cat5). We were having a problem getting the os/pc light
to light up on the cable modem, once I used the uplink port it worked
fine.

Yes, this makes sense, and it means that your interfaces are indeed
set up properly...

You mean 'network is unreachable'? I'm guessing we're dealing with a
routing problem, then. Type in 'route -n' on the Linux box. You
should get something like this:
Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface
172.16.0.0 * 255.255.255.0 U 0 0 3 eth0
127.0.0.0 * 255.0.0.0 U 0 0 14 lo
The second one may or may not exist, depending on your kernel version,
but the first is the one we're concerned about. If you don't see
that, then what's happening is that the Linux box doesn't know where
to send signals destined for 172.16.0.0, and thus, that network is not
reachable.
The solution? Well, if it *is* this problem (which it might not be),
try entering this (as root):
/sbin/route add -net 172.16.0.0 netmask 255.255.255.0
That should set it up. Good luck!

Is mountd listed in /etc/inetd.conf? If not, then I don't think your
tcp-wrappers setup has caused this problem.
Check your /var/log/messages file for relevant information.
If you still can't find the problem, post more information, such as:
- which distribution you have, including version number and installed
updates.
- the contents of your /etc/hosts.allow and .deny files.
- whether mountd is mentioned in your /etc/inetd.conf file, or if
mountd is started at boot time.
- relevant information from your /var/log/messages file.
- error message(s) when you try to mount a NFS.

normally just enable the pop3 in the inetd.conf (pop3 stream tcp nowait root
/usr/sbin/tcpd /usr/sbin/popper -s (suse5.3)). Make sure its always included
in services.

Did I understand your problem right? You try to install Linux from CD wich
is shared by a Windows95 box. If you try this, forget it, this won't work.
The Win95 supports only smb to share the cd-rom, not tcp/ip. Win95 uses
tcp/ip only to connect tcp/ip based services.

Things are progressing well on my new linux server. I now have email
set up and all goes well for email the originates form the outside

I don't like Redhat for this BTW (Slakware's not dead). Note that i could

RealPlayer and IRC do not support SOCKS directly. You will need to SOCKSify
them.
You may want to try the runsocks method as described at the
http://www.socks.nec.com/how2socksify.html page. This requires that you use
the shared library (ELF) versions of IRC and RealPlayer. You will also need
to have the SOCKS shared library (libsocks5_sh.so) and the runsocks script on
each client Linux system (created when you build the SOCKS5 distribution).

in the man page - also found online at the www.socks.nec.com site; there is a
link off the how2socksify.html page).
When configuring RealPlayer for Netscape, you will need to ensure that you run

'/usr/local/bin/runsocks /home/foobar/rvplayer5.0/rvplayer %s' as per the

I would imagine that you will need to follow the same sort of procedure for
IRC.
Note: I haven't tried this yet, as my experimental/development Linux system is
currently in a broken state (due to an unfortunate CORBA accident on my part).

If the client is Win95/Win98/WinNT, then you can download Hummingbird's SOCKS
Client V5 software. This is the best solution, since once configured, it will
intercept TCP/IP communications from your Windows machine, and redirect as
required to the SOCKS server. The instructions on how to configure this are
essentially: if the packet is meant for a destination on the internal network,
then don't go to the SOCKS server, otherwise send the packet to the SOCKS
server. The SOCKS client supports SOCKS V4 or SOCKS V5.
You can download the software from www.hummingbird.com. The FAQ and
installation instructions are also there.
The SOCKS server may need to be configured to accept SOCKS requests from your
client machine. Speak to your system administrator regarding this.

I have a dual 133 linux box. It's got two nic's in it, both are
3c905b-tx's. When I boot, I get this error, SIOCADDRT: Invalid
Argument. We are getting a frame relay connection in another week. I
wanted to get all the proxy/firewalling issues done before the line gets
installed. I'm trying to connect to my ISP via modem. I can dial in
(via dip) make the connection, but cannot resolve any names, or connect
to anything. This is a the same machine that I use at home (sans one
nic) I cannot figure out what else it could be. One nic is a
192.168.1.1 IP and the other is a 192.168.2.1 IP. they both work, and
can ping other machines on the network of about 10 people. Samba is
running on this machine, as well as a pop3/smtp server. I am running
RedHat 2.0.36, with all the necessary items for diald as well. (slip &
other packages)
Any Suggestions would be appreciated.

This looks OK for a slip route. So do the others.

I don't know any man pages for this but it should be in the NAG.
There is also the /etc/resolv.conf which should have nameservers specified
with entries like
domain yourisp.com
( or search yourisp.com works too. )
nameserver xxx.xx.xxx.xx
nameserver yyy.yyy.yy.y
"man 5 resolver" for more about resolv.conf
There is /etc/hosts
where you can put often used IPs with their FQDNs for quick lookup.
"man 5 hosts" for more.

If none of this brings joy then I would make sure the ppp negotiation
messages don't show anything funny. These are ordinarily found in
/etc/log/debug for pppd after adding the debug option - diald may do
something else.
