there is an option in smb.conf to make your linux box a wins client.
You must be running samba to do this. this will allow them to see you
also in network neighborhood. The only machines that will have
entries in DNS will be the ones with static IP's (server's usually) so
I'd suggest installing samba or editing the /etc/smb.conf file if it
is already installed.

Hello out there,
I'm still a newbie in Linux (but I'm working on it...) an I have got a littl
problem with my little network. I have six PCs on a BNC-Bus. They are
arranged as in the following scheme:
WIN98-----WIN98-----WIN98-----LINUX-----WIN98-----NTServer
The Bus is correctly terminated. With my WIN98 Clients I can Log on to a
NTServer PDC and use its Proxy (Internet). I can also get files from
WIN98-Clients with my Linux PC.
I can ping the Linux-Machine from WIN98-Clients, but NOT with the NT-Server.
Pinging WIN98 from Linux works, but NOT to the NT-Server.
So maybe you can help me. (Sorry for my english, I'm from Germany)
Thanks, Matthias Minich

hi,
I have exactly the same problem. I have a Wyse-50 compatible terminal
connected to my Linux-Box... but it does not work correctly.
I have everything configured correctly (hopefully) and I can log in
on the terminal. The TERM - var is set to wyse50.
Some programs work absolutely correctly on the terminal... which means, all
keys (e.g. cursor keys) work correctly, the display attributes are ok and
scrolling is also ok. However, MOST programs do NOT work correctly;
keys dont work, attributes are wrong and after a short time the screen is
only a mess of random characters. (such programs include emacs, vi, joe, mc,
pine etc...; what's working is for example less or yast).
What's wrong? I guess it has something to do with the termcap/terminfo stuff?
I am using a suse 5.3 distribution.
Yours,
Wolfram

I'm not doing this currently, but what I had for a while was multiple
username lines in the rc file.
poll mymailhost with proto pop3:
username budr there with password XXXXXXXXXX is budr here
username foo there with password YYYYYYYYY is foo here
fetchall
I ran fetchmail from root's crontab.

Looks like they are doing an IDENT on your system. If you don't want them
to, comment out
'auth' line in your /etc/inetd.conf. However, some servers require it for
you to connect to them,
especially IRC servers.
I don't know of any security issues with ident. If I were you, I'd make
sure my telnet, rsh, rlogin,
finger, talk, and basically anything else you don't use are commented out
of /etc/inetd.conf.
Often best to be a little paranoid.

My advice would be to disable comm 1 in your machines bios and set the modem so
that its comm1 irq 4. Much less headaches that way.

This sounds like an IRQ problem with the NIC. Thats where I would look
first. Make sure that its absolutely unique.

Subject: Raw Socket problem
Date: 11 Apr 1999 14:53:21 +0200
Hello!
To open a raw socket which gets everything via IP from my own protocol (which
resides on protocol number 217) I use the following:
s = socket (AF_INET, SOCK_RAW, 217);
while (1) {
read (s, buf, 2048)
.
.
.
This works flawlessly with 2.0 kernels. However, under 2.1.132, read blocks
forever and it seems that absolutely _no_ packet is received! I could not get
my program to receive _any_ raw packets, I also tried other protocol numbers,
but nothing!
Maybe I need a special socket ioctl for 2.1.x kernels? Or what could be wrong?

Hi All,
I am using Slakware 3.6 with a 2.2.4 Linux kernel with
the netatalk package included in the Slackware.
All work fine, except for one thing, when two users tried
to open the same file they have no special message. So when they
save the file the last user who saves the file looses changes
made by the other.
I don't understand why or where I can see or check.
Could you please give me some help or any pointers ?
Thanks in advance for your help
Best Regards

Subject: Re: Network Printer (Linux + MacOS + HP JetDirect)
Date: Sun, 11 Apr 1999 11:31:23 GMT
Thanks Michael,
Do you mind clarifying a couple of things for me so that I know what to look
for. Sorry for my naivete.
When you say "printer control panel", just what do you mean? I assume you
mean the buttons on the printer itself. I've gone through all of the menus on
the printer and the manuals for the printer and JetDirect card, but did not
find anywhere that I could set the IP address. I had printed out the
printer's "self test" page with includes the MIO interface information. This
identifies the hardware address (the FF:FF:FF:FF:FF:FF number) but does not
give me what I consider to be an IP address that I can use under Linux to
identify the printer. It does identify what it calls a "Node Number" which on
my printer is listed as 154 --- potentially part of an IP address I guess.
But then the next line identifies what it calls a "Network Number" which on
my printer is listed as 65280. With this number I could not figure out how to
make a normal IP address (the "dot" or 0.0.0.0 type). Do I add dots to give
65.28.0.154 -- an unusual IP address for my printer I thought? Do I convert
65280 to binary and reinterpret the binary as the first 24 bits of the IP
address and then tack on 154 for the last 8 bits? Basically, I couldn't
figure out what these numbers meant and assumed they were something specific
to the HP Printer, the Mac, or AppleTalk and thus not available to Linux. I
also hunted up the "HP Namer" and "HP Zoner", but these programs do not allow
me to set what I consider to be a normal "dot" IP address. Thus I am in a
quandary here.
Do you mean a program on the Mac? If so, I think I may be missing this. For
instance, on the Mac I don't have a "printer" control panel. I do have the
"Chooser" that allows me to setup the printer, i.e., change its description
file and such, but this does not allow me to alter its IP address. Likewise,
the "PrintMonitor" on the Mac allows me to read the current configuration,
sans IP address, and it doesn't allow me to set an address. Maybe I'm missing
the printer control panel you are refering to? If this is some software that
came with the JetDirect card in the first place, I don't seem to have it.
On the Linux machines, the Printer tool on the control-panel also does not
allow me to set an IP address for the printer. Is there some other printer
control panel under Linux that I should look for?
I don't use Windows, but I suppose that I could load and boot Windows on one
of the Linux boxes ... does Windows have the printer control panel that you
refer to? Should I search the HP web site for this tool? I already did a
cursory look there, maybe I should look in greater detail.
I think I'm slowly being swallowed by the quagmire of unknown (to me at least)
HP network protocols.
Thanks,
Nick B.
