What does where it was invented have to do with anything? It's still
incredibly silly to call a competition in one country a World Series. I
really don't see what its invention has to do with anything...

I certainly would. It's quite possible to have a war of global effect
which includes *most* continents without having Europe involved. I
suspect it's unlikely, given political climates and affiliations, but I
don't see why it shouldn't happen.

The resolv.conf syntax is OK.
It feels a little bit like an interrupt conflict. Is Emacs run in X?
The thought is that the mouse in X may use the same IRQ as the modem.
Or something else might use the IRQ that the modem uses.
What does setserial show the IRQ to be for the X mouse device file.
For the modem device file? What does "cat /proc/interrupts" show for
that IRQ before the PPP connection, and what does it show for the that
IRQ during the PPP connection?

G'day Ben,
I have just set up a network with Linux 5.2 and two Win95 PCs'. I assume
you have SAMBA installed on your Linux box. A couple of pointers to
check:
To make sure your network card in the Linux box is actually loaded and
working, enter the following command:
/sbin/ifconfig
You should see two devices listed, "lo" and "eth0". If you are missing
one of these (say the "lo" entry, enter the following:
ifconfig lo 127.0.0.1
The other clue might be to make sure SAMBA knows the workgroup name you
have in your Win9x network settings. Do this by editing /etc/smb.conf
The workgroup is near the top and should be changed to be the same as the
one in your Win9x settings. Then
/etc/rc.d/init.d/smb.init stop
/etc/rc.d/init.d/smb.init start
to restart SAMBA.
Good luck,
Kevin

I was interested in this claim, so did a bit of research. According to a
web page I found (http://www.geocities.com/Athens/5268/casualty.html),
the USA had 295,000 military casualties whereas the UK had 326,000
military casualties and 62,000 civilian casualties. Of course, when you
bear in mind the relative size of Great Britain and the US, it shows up
even more starkly. Of course, this was due to being in the war earlier,
but it is significant that 295,000 people form a much smaller proportion
of the population of the US than 388,000 people do wrt the UK.
These all pale into comparison with the Soviet Union, China, and Germany,
of course.
FWIW, the web page quotes its sources as Alan Bullock - Hitler and
Stalin: Parallel Lives pp987 and The Times Atlas of the Second World War
pp204,205.

Hi all,
I have a notebook with IrDA device.
When I recompile the kernel 2.2.6,
and enabled the IrDA related options while make config,
I got errors from the compiler.
The reason is from a kernel source file net/iriap.c,
it includes a <linux/irda.h> but there's no such a header file.
Besides, it uses a symbol CS_ASCII that is undeclared so
causes a failure.
Anybody ever encouter the sam problem?
and what did you do with it?
Thanks.

I'm not sure how to set such a system up, but one thing that may cause you
problems is the IP range. Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't IPs which start
10.x.x.x have a subnetmask of 255.0.0.0? After looking through FAQs and
having problems with Linux not booting at all with other settings, this may
cause you probs.

You should use 0.99.1 from http://diald.unix.ch if you use a

be something that "just happens" to have a similar name :-).

Read README.ethertap. If your kernel doesn't have an ethertap
module and you don't want to build one you can add "alias tap<n> off"
lines to /etc/modules.conf (or /etc/conf.modules or whatever your
dist. calls it this week)
>Jul 6 17:45:40 nameserver diald[905]: start sl0: SIOCSIFMETRIC:
>Operation not supported
2.2 kernels don't support interface metrics. Diald tries in case
someone was relying on it with older kernels.
>Jul 6 17:45:41 nameserver diald[905]: start sl0: SIOCADDRT: File exists
2.2 kernels add routes automatically. Diald tries to add the route anyway
because we need to do it on older kernels.
>My guess is that it is looking for an ethertap as an interface. (This
>was not compiled into the kerhel.) However, diald.conf includes the line
>"device /dev/ttyS0"
The device option gives a real interface or a device that a ppp or
slip interface might be established on. The ethertap or slip is used
as a proxy when there is no real interface up.
>In fact, diald.conf is merely a modified version of the sample

As are all valid configs to a greater or less :-).

'lo all
I have been asked to fix a system that was previously working before a
configuration change before the guy left (and no, it wasn't malicious ;) ).
Anyway, the ISP I work at has a Portmaster, which the modems dial in to and
then this in turn authenticats with the Radius Server on the Linux machine.
Now, all of the users are listed in the Postgres database, but I believe
there is a script, which is converting these to a 'users' text file that
Radius can process. The problem is, the Portmaster appears to update the
database periodically with usage stats, modem use etc and I don't understand
how this works. Worse still, the current information being provided is not
being put into the right place or in the right format.
I know Linux, Postgres and SQL pretty well, so any help in simply where
these settings are and what they should be would be *very* helpful as I've
checked a few Radius sites as well as Postgres sites with no luck. Any
ideas/URLs?

I don't see how ipac can help me - isn't it just for ip accounting - ie.

I need something that will run a script for ipfwadm when ppp is brought up

need to tell ipfwadm not to recalculate firewall rules each time ppp is
brought up.
I seem to recall something in my linux setup (can't remember what point)
about
having the firewall rules reloaded each time ppp is brought up - I probably
wanted to say no but likely that i said yes so each time I bring up ppp
I get the rules that I set at startup reset.
Can I turn this off - is it an option in ipfwadm ?

But now the question is:
If I start the "ppp0" with netcfg and I watch the connection with "tail -f

pppd[712]: Serial Connection established.
pppd[712]: Using interface ppp0

How can load the above modules? I didn't find them in any directory.

Most likely the connection fails on the LCP negotiation. To see what happens there,
add debug or -d to your /etc/ppp/options file. If that does not help, add
daemon.* /var/log/messages
to your /etc/syslog.conf file. (Don't forget to restart syslogd). Now connect to
your ISP and check /var/log/messages. You should see a number of LCP messages. One
of those will be a reject on some parameter negotiation. This will give you the
answer.

My advice: Dump the router. Unless it supports NAT (Network Address Translation),
because this is what you need. 192.168.x.x is not routed on the internet so it
will never work. If your router does not support NAT, connect the TA to your
Linux box, recompile the kernel with ipforwarding, masq and all the other
necessary stuff (see the Howto's). Install IP Masquerading and you're on! I have
4 PC's accessing the internet this way, in addition to the Linux box. Linux will
be your router.

I believe you have to stop and restart the NFS daemons to re-export the
exported file systems. The NFS daemons start at boot time (on my machine)
and only later do I mount the CDROM. Thus, I need to re-export. Sorry, I
don't remember the actual commands- I wrote them down at home...

Without an knowing your system we could only guess so here goes:
Either no or too small a swap space.
Very little physical memory.
Either /var or /tmp are filling up.
