I had the same problem, found an ftp site that had the latest mount
version, 2.9a if I remember correctly, even after I compiled and
install it I had the same message.

use ipfwadm -F p masquerade to just get things going and eliminate possible
mistakes. Re-do the
more specific ipfwadm stuff after it's up. Monitor both eth0 and ppp0 on
the linux box with
tcpdump -nei eth0, tcpdump -nei ppp0 to see if requests from local machines
are making it to
eth0 and out ppp0.

Forget it... I found the answer
My BIOS is (was) set up to the default setting of Enable PnP OS. I simply
disabled this option
and everything works fine now. For some reason it was holding off on setting my
IRQs until the
OS loaded, and since linux isn't inheritely PnP compatible, I was getting a bad
IRQ setting. I still
haven't booted back into windows, but I assume the NIC will still function
then.

For RH
Read PPP-HOWTO to get ppp working on the linux box. Basically have a
network card working (see NET-3-HOWTO and Ethernet-HOWTO). If
you can do an ifconfig -a and see lo and eth0 then your almost done.
If your build included ppp your all set, if not then you need to get it -
see PPP-HOWTO. Find ppp-on and ppp-on-dialer which should be in
/usr/doc/ppp-2.3.5/scripts. These may be already in /etc/ppp. If not put them
there and make a path to them. Edit ppp-on for your values - not much
difficult
there. You will probably have a cuax device ie /dev/cua1 instead of what's
there.
The values are all explained in the HOWTO's. ppp-on-dialer can stay as is in
most cases.
Check the modem with minicom to see if it can dial out ok to your ISP.
atdt xxx-xxxx and it should dial in for you if the modem was installed
properly.
If its ok then ppp-on to dial in. Monitor /var/log/messages with a seperate
window
with tail -f messages to see what happened.
On the network side this is cake if you installed networking on a custom
install
or did a server install again with RH this junk is all setup.
You need a hub and some cables. You can get everyone on a class C network
by using 192.168.1.xxx numbers 192.168.1 is the network and goes into networks
in /etc/networks. Also fill out /etc/hosts with your other machines. So the
98 and 95 machines would have their domain say smallnet.com. Everyone is
smallnet.com - linux and the MS boxes. Set this up and try to have the various
boxes ping eachother. First by number 192.168.1.x then by name. The full name
is something like linux.smallnet.com and msbox98.smallnet.com and msbox95.com.
In hosts
you have 192.168.1.1 linux.smallnet.com linux. Try pinging everyone by their
nick name.
Once these are going ping works all the way around by name. Ifconfig -a
see
an lo and eth0 and ppp-on can connect to your ISP and fetch URL's. Remember
to fill in your ISP's nameserver in /etc/resolv.conf. When you connect and are
logged in an ifconfig will show ppp0 with a dynamic address issued to you etc.
Now your connected test the connection with nslookup microsoft.com it should
come back with simething other than an error ie info on your server and
something
about microsofts address.
Then about the last step is to setup masquerading on the linux box so when
the 98 machine requests a url it will go to the linux box and linux will
remember who sent the request - send the request to the net. Get info back and
package it back to the original requesting box and do it all seamlessly. To
get masquerading going you need
to real IP_Masquerading HOWTO. basically you execute
ipfwadm -F p masquerade
modprobe ip_masq_ftp
modprobe ip_masq_irc
This will work if you did a custom load and did networking and all the other
packages or did a server install. If not then you have to do the reading and
find
out how to get this setup in your system. So if you have it then these
commands
will work. The ipfwadm will leave your box exposed to a hacker but the chances
are slim. If all this works then fine it out by reading the doc on
masquerading and
setup the box properly as a firewall - its not bad to do this.
So execute the command ifpw... etc the modprobe.... etc and may be
everything
will work. Verify whats going on by opening two small windows. Xterm -fn 6x12
& and keep'em open. Execut tcpdump -nei eth0 and tcpdump -nei ppp0. So when
you make a request from msbox98 you can watch the frames going out over your
net through eth0 into ppp0 and off into heaven.

I'm a networking newbie. I have finally received a "Static IP Address" from
a local ISP Service Provider and I want to convert my dynamic IP assigned
number to the static address from the local ISP. The problem is my linux
box, "server", on my home LAN is set up to use Dynamic IP addresses with my
current ISP. I am using IP Masquerade and ipfwadm firewall on the linux
server. The win95 machines connect to the WWW through the linux box just
fine with my current setup BUT, I can't get it to work with the new static
IP #. If someone can help me or point me to a specific HOWTO on setting up
a dialup ppp connection with a static IP address I would appreciate it very
much.
If this is a dumb question my apologies to the group and I will keep
searching for the answer.

First, let me say you are correct. It is a bugger of a problem (at
least for me).
netstat -rn says the following:

We have 3 lines with 64K synchronous modems to setup a private wan.
I believe that at 64K there is no need for smart cards, a card based
in Zilog SCC all that I need, I'm lookin for cards that costs less
then 200$ (EUR 171).
Anybody knows were can I buy these cards ?

The ppp-2.2.x source package has a README.cbcp that contains some c-code
diffs which can be converted to a callback patch. The ppp-2.3.5 source
has a README.cbcp that contains makefile diffs which can be converted to
to a makefile-patch that will cause callback code to be included in
the compile. The support is client-only.
The pppd man pages don't address callback options, nor does the file
README.cbcp . The source code shows that there is one cbcp option, of the
form <cb PhoneNumber> for 2.2.0f and <callback PhoneNumber> for 2.3.5
I assume that using the option activates the pppd callback code. There is
also a callback script in ppp-2.x.x/scripts. Be aware that I haven't
done callback - if this response is broken, you get to keep both pieces.

Hi,
I have a small network with some machines on a 10Mb segement
and some others on a 100Mb segement. I have a RH5.2 machine
setup on both networks using two ethernet cards. All of the other
machines on the net are running Windows 95/98. I have successfully
set up samba so that all the computers on my 10Mb network (eth0)
can share files and the printers on the Linux system. However, when
I try to bring the other network on eth1 in to the workgroup using
the interface field in smb.conf things just don't quite work.
I would like all of my computers on both networks to be in the same
workgroup and be able to share stuff using the Linux machine as a
router. I can get samba set up so that both networks see the Linux
box at the same time, but noone can actually access anything on
the Linux machine nor do any of the machines from one network appear
on the other. Each segment appears to be isolated. When I try to
access any resource on the linux machine from a windows machine,
I get a "network busy" dialog box.
I am so close, but not quite there yet. If anyone out there has
samba working across two nets using a linux samba server as
a bridge/router between the two, I'd like to know how you did it.
I'd be happy to browse through your smb.conf file or whatever else
needs to be tweaked.

I have found that on initial install RH has problems when I use disk druid.
The load rarely goes well. If I use
fdisk it load without problems. Another work around is to do a server
install then reinstall with the partitions
which were made with the server install. Lots of people report not having
any first time install problems but
the errors I get are very consistand when I use disk druid. Happend on two
different systems, 3 disks on IDE. ??

I currently use my linux box as a router and ip forwarding for a couple of
winblows boxes. I would like to restrict access to certain sites or ip
addresses. I cant seem to get the ipfwadm or route command to do this.
What am I doing wrong??
