Simply hanging around being negative is a text book example of a troll.
Is that what you want to do?
In all of your arguments against Linux, you have focussed the defense of
your opinion on the GUI alone. You have not once delved into process
management, memory management, architecture, networking, or the
programming model. Also, when ever you talk about applications, you use
the number of applications, not quality or spread of functionality. You
may say "the user does not care" but, the fact remains that these things
contribute to stability, scalability, and speed which are things the
user does care about.
There are, of course, GUI differences between Linux and Windows, there
are GUI differences between different Linux installs. This, IMO, is a
good thing. My computer does exactly what I want it to do, the way I
want it to do it. That is a good GUI, because that is what a GUI is
supposed to do.
As for applications. I can't think of a single thing that I would want
to do with the computer that would not be just as good or better done in
Linux than in Windows.
As for applications, I will take applix over M$ Office any day. It
always crashes, sometimes it even takes Windows NT with it. When I use
Applix, it just works. Perhaps the screen fonts may need just a little
work, but, the output is perfect and it does not crash. I will trade a
touch of aesthetics for stability/reliability any day.
Linux does not suck. If you like Windows, that's fine, good for you bob!
You, however, are the only one I know that says that. All my
acquaintances hate Windows with a passion. I am constantly being called
with questions or for help. You may have picked up by now that I am a
Windows NT driver guy. Working on Windows is sort of like being a Yugo
mechanic. I can fix it, I can add things to it, but hell I won't drive
it except to test it.

Madge is producing a Driver for their PCI Cards. AFAIK not for their ISA
Cards. You should therefore get a Madge PCI Card and the Driver from Madge
(contact them via eMail!) or get an Olicom ISA or PCI Card. At the Olicom
Web-Site you can download a Driver for their TR ISA/PCI Cards.

If you get compile errors, I think you are using libc5 ? There are some broken
versions out. Look at the NIS-HOWTO, if your version is know to broken. I think
it was libc 5.4.28-5.4.35 or so.

If the netgroup entries are not wrong, no. On my systems, it works fine.

I've been looking for answers to my diald problems but haven't
found any. So here's my post.
diald (version 0.16.5) dials out when I try and contact somebody, but
the routing does not look correct. I am using RedHat 5.2.
When I connect by hand and look at the route I get this (works):

I've configured leafnode to fetch news from a single server so I can
read postings offline from /var/spool/news/.
1.) Though stated otherwise in the documentation of my distribution
(SuSE 6.0) files for subscribed newsgroups are not automatically
generated in /var/spool/news/interesting.groups/. I have to touch them
manually. Is there a way to change this?
2.) While leafnode will work perfectly with the news-client 'tin'
'netscape' refuses to display postings. That means that all groups and
the number of messaged are displayed correctly. Netscape will not
display the headers let alone the messages. Is this a problem of
leafnode? Is there a way to fix it by manipulationg the structure of
/var/spool/news/ for example?
Any ideas?

Ok, I got connected with ppp using pppsetup (quick!!!). I was not able to
ping anything outside of my nameserver addresses, and my dynamically
assigned IP address, and my termserver(?) IP address.
ping would resolve the name but nothing ever responded. I thought it was
broke, and didn't have routing set up right. However, I loaded up lynx, and
it works! I load up ftp, and connect to any server that I care to. ping
still won't respond. I've used it with/without the -r option (the only
reason I even tried to use -r was due to several ppp faqs and mini how-to's
stating to test your connection in this fashion).
I haven't tried mail yet, but see not reason why it won't work. Why does
everything else seem to function, and ping doesn't?
Is this similar to the tracert/traceroute problem with multiple interfaces?
I can't seem to find any info on this.
I am using a virgin 'official blue box' RH 5.2 workstation install, and the
only thing installed was a different XF86Config file, and pppsetup.

When I try to telnet from a Win95 machine, the telnet program makes the
connection, but then the window closes. Inetd is running, and the correct
entries are made in /etc/inetd.conf.
Also, when I try to $telnet localhost on the console, it says "Connection
closed by foriegn host". Apache web server seems to work just fine from other
computers. I also checked hosts.allow. That says ALL : ALL. Also, hosts.deny is
empty. Any other suggestions? Thanx. :-)

In a way it is an inconsistancy, but in another way it isn't. The linux
login program has been hacked (if you will) to pay attention to a file
called /etc/securetty (may vary from dstrib to distrib). Wu-ftpd could

Yup, that entry along with ftp is there by default. I am not sure what else I
am doing wrong. $telnet localhost doesn't seem to work either. It sez
"Connection closed by foriegn host". Any other suggestions? Thanx.

There was a *.* in the syslog.conf file and removing it stopped all
messages from ppp from logging, even the normal connection and
termination messages. So removing the *.* is a brute-force temporary
fix to the problem. The real solution lies somewhere else. Perhaps
in another configuration file.

I'm working on Diskless stations which boots via bootp without any pb
up to now. But I try now to boot dual PII and got a surprise ! The SMP
support is not found !!!
I've boot this dual PII with a floppy and no pb , the SMP support is
found.
I'm wondering if the Boot bios of etherboot hide the APIC bios ????
Or perhaps the address of downloading the kernel and the ramdisk
override the APIC bios ???

I have got the same problem between a linux-box and a notebook running
linux. slattach and ifconfig seem to work fine, but I don't get a
connection.
Here I need a null modem cable with 25pin and 9pin. Does anyone have the
correct cabling diagram? The one I use doesn't work at all.
