Have you set your gateway on your Windows box ?
If you have it can only be one of the following :
1) Routing on your Linux box with ipfwadm - Unlikley if you've got access to
the internal network.
2) Is IP Forwading enabled ? Check on boot up.
3) Is your routing table OK ? (route)

Hi !
I want to use my redhat 5.1 as an ipx router.
The only thing i know is that i see a line dealing with IPX when the
system starts.
I've read the IPX howto and downloaded the ipx.tgz.I've extracted it in
my /src/ directory but now what am i supposed to do ?
I think i'm supposed to create the "ipx_autoconfigure" tools since i
don't have it anywhere...
I've tried to "make" it but the only thing it produces is a lot of
errors but no "executable" files.
Anyone can help me ?
Thanks a lot !
Regards,
Marceau

RTFM. /usr/doc/samba has a lot of hints; also look in the smb.conf manpage.
The latest samba (v2.0) also has a Web-administration system which can
make initial setup a lot easier.

I found the answer to my own problem.
Diald sets up a pseudo interface. When outgoing traffic appears on that
interface,
diald dials.
IP forwarding has to be setup to forward packets from the local lan to
the pseudo
interface. I had done that, but by accident, enabled masquerading.
Here, the
packets that had been output to the pseduo interface now obtain the
pseudo interface
as its from field.
I still don't know why name requests that follow after connection is
made are still
sourced from the pseudo interface or from the previous ip address.

Your so called integration is a big fat illusion

Sorry, but I have no answers, but just to let you know, I'm in a similar
position, so if anyone DOES know, they will probably be helping many
of us...
I've got a 3Com 3c900 ethernet card (which is tier-1 supported from RedHat
5.2)
which runs to a Motorola CyberSurfer cable modem through the @Home network.
The Network Configurator never seems to really "activate" the interface.
I can try and activate the "eth0" interface and it appears to be active,
until I
close and re-open the Network Configurator again, only to find out it isnt
active...
I was noticing a message on the Console after every "activate" that said
something like "delaying activation of eth0", but now even that has
stopped...

This is only the case if the NFS server on emil is the user-nfsd of Linux.
Pretty much any other NFS server (Solaris, IRIX, Linux knfsd, NetBSD, ...)
only exports on a partition basis, so that when you export / it doesn't
automatically export /usr (assuming /usr is a separate partition).

It'd be great. I searched in DejaNews for an old post on the
topic, but most of the posts involved someone setting up a network at
home. I'd just like to get this main box working! :)
> I've got a 3Com 3c900 ethernet card (which is tier-1 supported from RedHat

> which runs to a Motorola CyberSurfer cable modem through the @Home network.
My setup involves a DEC 21041 based card with a SB1200 SURFboard
modem. I do know all works well under Win OSes, so the problem is
definitely in the setup/scripts and perhaps the kernel itself. (Not a
bug, just perhaps not compiled correctly with a generic install.) I don't
even know where to begin to look. Doesn't help to have HOWTOs that point
to non-existant files, although some posts have referred to look into
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts for RedHat distros.
Anyway, well just have to wait for a kind (and experienced) soul
to come by and give us the magic answer...
I'll work on it myself, but I don't think I can solve it fatser
than this group can answer it...

I had similar symptoms. I don't think OS/2 Peer responds to a wildcard
NMB request (test 5). Querying for a known name (like the machine name
or the user name) works, though.
I figured out that I needed to increase the password level in smb.conf,
as I had a mixed case password and I suspect OS/2 is case-folding when
submitting the password. I set both password and user level to 8 and was
able to connect to the Linux box.
BTW, contrary to info I read in the OS/2 Samba stuff
(http://carol.wins.uva.nl/~leeuw/samba/warp.html#warp), I can still do a
domain login to my existing LAN Server system and access the Linux Samba
server. I don't have to use the node login (AKA File and Print Client
Workstation Login).
As I'm replacing the OS/2 server, my concern now is how to make Samba
automatically assign shares to users. That way I just have to configure
the drive assignments once at the server and not multiple times at each
workstation.

Hank,
Who exactly is in your resolv.conf? Also what is in
/etc/hosts,
/etc/networks and /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ipcfg-*? I have
about the same setup. A few hosts with an NT router with a Linux
box running PPP and masquerading. Connected to the NT box is
another
network. All machines DNS entries point to the ISP's dns
numbers.
The other hosts on my networks are defined in hosts and lmhosts.
Every
one can ping and lookup by name but it happend differently under
different circumstances. Do you have WINS enabled on the MS
machines?
But what exactly is your setup? Who gets the static ip from the
work network. Is it the linux box or a router in between? What
are these machines dns entries?
The process for DNS resolution on RH is selectable but most
machines default to something like wins, hosts, dns. Depending
on
whats in hosts and if static routes were added to wins you will
get
varying results. What has been done on your systems? You did
not
mention which ip addressses your working with or what the network
topography was or what addresses were in resolv.conf. It would
be
helpful to have them.
When things are working right you can watch with tcpdump arp
getting things square and the networks come up.
"Who has xxxx.xxx.xx tell yyy.yyy.yy" then the reply from
xxxx.xxx.xx
with its mac address. Have linux up and watching eth0 then boot
the other machines and see who can report into linux.
