Hi, I need to run a Linux(RH6) box with 2 intel pro network cards, both on
the same subnet, where if one card dies the other kicks in, hardware
redundancy in other words.

Any ideas?
Is it possible?

Hi there,

we want to install a linux server, which works like a proxy without
having to configure the clients with proxy addresses. Some kind of
transparent thing, that caches internet traffic (mostly http) to reduce
the line traffic, without disturbing it when the server is down.

Is there some piece of software, that can handle this?

Please help!

Greetings all,

Currently I'm trying to install a 2nd ethernet card into my computer,
but I'm having problems doing so. Using the kernel configurator I
installed the 2nd card, which is a LinkSys Etherfast. I looked on the
LinkSys webpage, which claims that the card is compatible with RH6 and
uses the TULIP module for installation. This method was used for the
installation of the first ethernet card, a 3com model 3c59x. This first
ethernet card works correctly, but I'm having problems with this second.
Whenever I try and activate the card under the network configurator, I
get the error message "ETH1 DELAYING INITIALIZATION". Both of these
cards are pci.

Next I tried "cat /proc/pci" to check out the configuration of both of
these cards. According to this, my SCSI card has IRQ=9, along with both
of these ethernet cards. I tried to change the LinkSys cards IRQ within
the Kernel Configurator, but when I restarted the kernel I noticed no
changes within /proc/pci. I believe this to be the problem. Hopefully
when I change this 2nd card's IRQ to an available one, it should work.

My questions are:

How can I know what IRQ's are available for me to set the card to?
How can I change the ethernet card to the specified IRQ?

I will also probably need to change some of the settings within the BIOS
as well, but I didn't want to just start changing IRQ settings until I
knew which one to set the card to.

I did a modprobe of eth1 and I got the following message,

/lib/modules/2.2.5-15/net/tulip.o: init_module: Device or resource busy

then I did a dmesg | more and got:

Unknown Tulip-style PCI ethernet chip type 11ad c115 detected: not
configured.

Hope that this helps in the diagnosis.
Any help would be greatly GREATLY appreciated!!!!!

Thanks,
Paul

Answer some questions here
        http://rlz.ne.mediaone.net/linux/firewall
and check the ipchains commands against what you have to
see what might need to be setup for (http, ftp, pop, new, icq)

So unless I run setserial to set the IRQ, I can't trust

Hi!!!

Where's the difference between insmod and morprobe??

In a HOWTO, it's said that I should only use modprobe... But by using
modprobe, the hisax-dirver tells me that the resource is busy :-( By
using insmod, the module is inserted without any error...
But as I have SuSE, I want to use YaST for the rest of the
configuration, and I assume YaST uses modprobe (because in YaST the card
doesn't work :-( )....

Help!

I am running RH 6.0 server on dual PII-350's with an external Sportster
modem on
a network with 17 client workstations that masquerade (NAT) through the
server.
My ISP hangs you up after two hours and my phone company crashes the
connection on a frequent basis - depending on humidity in their lines.
So I do a lot of re-dialing.

When diald gets two or three busy signals out of my ISP, the kernel
crashes-- worse
stability that NT server! So I remove diald.

So yesterday, I have the server connected to my ISP using the manual
PPPD
method (netcfg, etc.), with the automatic reconnect feature turned on.
The
only person on the system was me (nt workstation and rh 6.0): the rest
had gone
home and turned off their computers. And a couple of busy signals on a
dial
back and down goes my kernel -- very annoying.

So diald is vindicated. So how do I now fix pppd? (I am getting a lot
of heat
from the other 16 clients wanting on the internet!)

Anyone have any ideas?

Many thanks,

By "ping my own card," do you mean "ping 192.168.1.1" (or whatever the
address of that computer is), or "ping 127.0.0.1"? The former does SOME
access on the Ethernet card, but the latter doesn't.

Are you specifying addresses in numerical format or with names? The
latter requires a DNS lookup, so if your DNS entries are bad, it won't
work.

By "no sign of any networking activity," does that mean that you've looked
at relevant LEDs on the card and whatever hub it's connected to, and found
nothing happening?

If you go to another computer and ping the Linux box, what happens? Any
response to the ping? LEDs on the hub and Linux box's Tulip board?

How is your system configured -- manual entry of IP addresses, DNS
address, etc., or an automatic configuration like DHCP?

The issue with the missing baud rate in kppp is fixed in
version 1.6.18. With 1.6.14 and before, the speed setting
in the kppprc file would remain blank until the modem speed
widget was actually manipulated. With this new fix in
the kppp 1.6.18 or by changing the modem speed setting
in the older kppp dialog, you no longer need at add the
"baud rate" to the /etc/ppp/options file or as an additional
kppp parameter to pppd.

Hi,
If anyone can help me with the following, I would be estatic!
I have setup a ppp server and a client using Redhat 6.0.

  ip forwarding is turned on,

"Advanced router" was selected in kernel options version 2.2.10

the ppp link works fine but the client cannot ping anything beyond the
server even using ip numerical addresses. I have tried all options in
the kernel but to no avail. I notice on the server and client when I do
an ifconfig ppp0 there is NOARP. Could this be a problem?

server options are pppd -detach crtscts lock proxyarp dev etc
client options include the 'defaultroute'.

The routing tables look correct on both machines, I compared them to the
"network administrators guide" by Oalof Kirch.

I have run out of ideas. Thanking you in advance.
Cheers,
