PPP is probably OK, ppp-2.3.5 works with my 2.1.131 kernel and the "make

nothing was copied to the kernel source tree. I had already compiled
ppp into the kernel and it worked without recompiling.

Navi, usually the setup string is ATZ or AT&F . These should reset your
modem.

However, please note the following

ATM0 <-- turn off speaker entirely
ATM1 <-- Turn on speaker until carrier detected (usually the reset
default)
ATM2 <-- Internal speaker always off
ATM3 <-- Internal speaker on until carrier detected and off while
dialing

Sound like sometime in the past you may have done ATM3&W which turns on
the speaker and saves that setting into the modems memory.

Hi,
I am looking for advice on a reliable sort of hub for my home. I have a
10BaseT internet connection and two PC's, one runinng Redhat Linux 5.1
and the other running (shock horror) Windows95. I've seen a couple
around for approx $120 AUD but have never heard of the brands. Is their
any good brands which sell similar 5 port hubs for around the same
price?? If so where do I get one in Australia?
Thanks in advance.

That's the opposite way round from mine - my get operations are fine, but
doing a put of more than a few K starts locking it up. And it's not just
slow (with doulbe charcters etc.), it's no packets sent or received (which
looks size related, smaller packets getting through and larger ones not,
until it gets so that nothing gets through at all).

I don't think so. I didn't type it in, anyway, but it may be in a
configuration file somewhere.

12.5% loss of speed from full speed would be wonderful, that would be an
infinite increase in speed over zero...

> If this is the problem does it create drops in /sbin/ifconfig?

No. I have to drop the line explicitly and restart, ifconfig reports
everything fine, no errors etc.

> Where/How do I specify _asyncmap 0_ ? I start my connection with
>/sbin/ifup ppp0 &.

Hmm, I start it with either wvdial or pppup generally, and I don't know
where it should be put on either of those.

Thanks for the suggestion - eliminating what the problem isn't may spark
an idea about what's left...

(My favourite at the moment is some sort of queue block, but I don't know
how to look for that sort of thing...)

That may not necesarily be the case. I had the same problem, and found the
easiest way (read: the way that worked for me) was to just to live with whatever
name the system gave to the cards, and instead, just change which name gets
assigned which info..I moved my ifconfig lines in the boot scripts and changed
their ethX assignment, and that did the trick.

Robert, I'm not an expert in these matters, and everything looks
familiar in your posting, and identical to mine expect for one
detail.. your name servers are on a different network.. 24.64.0.0 from
your gateway/ip 24.65.0.0 .

You probably checked your routing using the command "netstat -nr" or
"route" and you know that you should see something like

0.0.0.0 24.65.228.1 0.0.0.0 UG ... etc.

at the bottom of that display.. is there any routing to your nameservers
in this display? Of course an "arp" command should show the ethernet
address for your gateway, yourself and any other ethernet computers on
your subnet.

Just a thought.. Ed

You actually have a couple of options...

The easiest option is to have REQUEST.NET handle your DNS for you
(although I seem to recall a rule at internic that said something about
the nameserver needing to reside on the same subnet). They can just
change the IP in DNS to point to your machine instead.

The next option would be to have PACBELL.NET (your current provider)
handle your DNS for you. They may or may not charge extra for this
although I'd tend to think the former to be true.

The last option is to run the DNS yourself and change your DNS
information with Internic. However, running DNS is no small task if
you've never done it before. The only reasons I can think of for running
your own DNS are:

A. You don't want to pay someone to handle DNS.
B. You don't want PACBELL.NET to know you're running a server.
C. You'd like to know more about DNS and how it works.

The DNS server needs to be up 100% of the time and according to internic
rules, should be on at least two *different* machines with unique I.P
addresses. Of course you can fool internic by binding two addresses to
one NIC in a single machine but that defeats the purpose of a backup DNS
machine.

If you really want to do your own DNS, begin by buying some books on the
subject. I'd recommend an "O'Reilly" book if you can find one. Then
experiment on an internal lan, making sure your setup works correctly
*BEFORE* letting the DNS server out on the internet. I can't stress
enough that the DNS setup must be *CORRECTLY* or you'll end up
propogating junk information out on the net. Beg, borrow or steal
someone, who knows DNS like the back of their hand, to have a look at
your setup before you change the info with internic.

Good luck,

-Jim

Hi,

I'm writing a Java Client/Server application. The server resides on a
Linux box running RedHat 5.1. The client runs through a browser or as a
standalone application.

The problem I am having is that I need lots of clients to be able to connect
to the server. The connections are done using socket connections to a port on
the Linux box. However, Either Java or Linux appears to be limiting the
number of connections to approximately 245.

Does anybody know of a way around this?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Cheers,
        Rob.

Either the /etc/resolv.conf file on your new Linux machine is
incorrect, or the DNS zone for the calling machine contains no IN PTR

to know the IP address of my machine, which will change

Hi,

I have a Thinkpad 600E running Redhat 5.2. I am trying to get the network
card configured correctly but no success so far.

I have the non-cardbus Xircom Realport combo 10/100/56K card (CEM56, yes?).
So far networking and modem work under Win98 and WinNT, and modem works
under Linux using minicom. Can't figure out what is wrong with the
networking. The local Linux techie couldn't figure it out either.

The current state of affairs (my tech support person wrote this) is:
-- The PCMCIA manager (3.0.5) recognizes the card (Xircom CEM 56) and
   installs the correct modules.
-- The ethernet driver is properly initialized and recognizes the ethernet
connection (see "Meda 10BaseT, silicon revision 5" messages).
-- ifconfig eth0 shows port 0x300, irq 3 hwaddr 00:10:A4:F6:39:6D
-- Kernel and pcmcia RPM versions are 2.0.36-0.7
-- Trying to ping something on the network results in "lost packets"
although the stats via /proc/interrupts and ifconfig don't change - no
interrupts, TX/RX packets, or framing problems.

Any hints on what might be wrong or needs to be done?

Thanks very much in advance for any help.

I'm experiencing a problem with FTP regularly hanging going from a

boxes (and even one 2.5, but not a machine running Solaris 7, at least
so far) to a server
running Linux RedHat 5.2, with the wu-ftpd (2.4.2 beta 18).

The ftp session always starts ok, but if I run an mget to get a bunch of
files, I can get
maybe 1- 2 dozen (the number varies a lot) and then it hangs getting one
of the files.
The hang is at least 2 minutes long (generally the files take only
seconds to transfer) and it does
not recover while I wait. If I hit Ctrl-C it looks like the entire file
did transfer, but it was waiting
for something to finish or close?

Please send me email if you have any clues- I'm not sure when I'll get
a chance to check the

Hi

I have Zyxel ISDN (external) and linux 2.0.35 (SuSE 5.3) as server

by PPPD the connection seems to work fine. However, occasionally
the pppd hangs-up the modem (SIGHUP) eventhough I am actively

The problem seems to take place when I make an WWW connections
from the client ( not always however ). First the browser freezes ( no

This could happen even if I am downloading something from the
internet with FTP on the server at the same time.

I use masquerading and I have also tested it with squid.
