Hi all, I need to use my Linux Laptop as a console for a couple of Cisco
2501 routers for initial configuration. Since these are done on a remote
site the laptop would be perfect rather than a terminal. I believe "cu" is
the program I should use but in testing, I have had no luck with it. Does
anyone have a sample command line to use or maybe a better program to do
this with. I am going from the serial port on the laptop to the console port
on the router.

Thanks in advance,
Mike

Subject: Re: ARP <---> PPP routing problems

Another piece of information on this problem. When
pppd (ondemand) is running on the "linux-gw", pinging a
host ("rosemary.gomes.home") on my
LAN gets sent to the eth0. But no ping echo response
packets are received on the eth0.

It seems that starting PPPd shuts off the eth0 interface
of "linux-gw.gomes.home" for input; i.e.,
packets go out but none come in. I have verified this
looking at /proc/net/dev, and using tcpdump -i eth0.

Now, when I stop "pppd" everything works normally.

Most of the time i connect just one system which functions as proxy and gateway
for the rest of the lan... one port goes to the hubs and the remaining ports are
used for those priviledged ones to be trusted with a direct connection... ;-)

Those features are available in the office connect routers as well...

The Lan Modem does come in short at that point though...

There's a patch to allow 2.0.36 to do port forwarding also. I've been
using it for quite a while, and if 2.2.1 isn't quite stable enough
yet, 2.0.36 is.

Subject: My POP3 seems to have broken!
Date: Tue, 02 Feb 1999 19:48:40 -0500

Hopefully someone can help me out with this one:

Yesterday I installed and built Sendmail 8.9.2. After fixing the relay
permissions, I tried logging into the server with Eudora on my trusty Mac
(the Linux RH 5.2 system is basically a household server) and got a TCP/IP
error - no connection. After a little investigation (telnetting to port
110) I realized that the POP3 daemon wasn't getting started. I verified
that I had the IMAP RPM installed (still), and tried restarting inetd (I
made sure ipop3d wasn't commented out), but I still can't connect. I can
send outbound mail fine, but I can't read it from anywhere but the host
itself (thank God for telnet and pine).

As I mentioned above, the system is a RedHat 5.2 box that's been plugging
away for many years and many upgrades - but I'm baffled. Any help would
be greatly appreciated and repaid in vBeer.

Is there any way to get the udp packets forwarded properly with
this version?

I finally got the masquerading done (crudely, but it works, as I'm
sending this from the win98 box via the Linux box)

I've seen the methods on how to do this with the 2.1/2.2 kernels,
but I'm not ready to upgrade the kernel yet.
(I'll be swapping machines this weekend, so I'll be starting over
and will do it *right* this time <g>)

Right now, my biggest problem is getting through to battlenet.
<sniff. no starcraft=withdrawl symptoms>

Any help would be appreciated. (even a FAQ or HOWTO that explains it.

btw, I've tried the port mapping with ipfwadm and that doesn't seem
to work. Not sure if I set it correctly though.
(manuals really, really should have EXAMPLES! <sigh> grouchmodeoff)

thanks.

Thanks for posting the link, it's a good description of the type of
architecture that's worked well for a few of our ISP customers as well.

As far as the load balancing & failover piece, cconsider a dedicated load
balancer, such as our Equalizer product. True load balancing is a tremendous
improvement over the "load spreading" of RoundRobin DNS, and server (&
service) failure detection insures high-availability. See
http://www.coyotepoint.com for details.

                Cheers!

Xavier Boschian wrote in message <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>...

Thanks. This was probably the problem. I actually have since found the
.rpm, and installed that. Everything works now.

Although - I'd like to have only one user enabled for ftp. I don't want
anyone else being able to ftp. I know that I can use the ftpusers file, and
list those people who can't log in, but that means I have to remember to add
the names to that list when I create a new user. Is there a way of
specifying that I want everyone to not be able to ftp, except for a
particular user ?

I've looked for the FAQ and the HOWTOs, but can't find them. If this
question is answered in one of them, please let me know where to find them.
Thanks.

And this user that I want to be able to ftp is actually just for the web
site designer who doesn't know anything about linux except how to ftp to a
machine and download his new files. So, the home directory I have for him
in /etc/passwd points to /home/httpd, and I've changed the ownership of all
files in there to that user, so there is no /home/ftp directory. I've also
now deleted the ftp user in /etc/passwd, because I don't want to allow
anonymous ftp of any kind. Plus I've added "anonymous" and "ftp" to the
ftpusers file, along with every other user on the system. Is that all I
have to do ? Is there anything else which I should do to add security to
ftp ? (Apart from having a good password)

Thanks.

As near as I can tell, I am using diald v16.5. It was recently
(within the last week) downloaded from the 'home page'. I used
freshmeat.net to find it. I think it was on loonie.net

Also, FWIW, I am running slackware 3.5 (kernel 2.0.34) libc5 based.

Subject: PPP Problems (possibly CHAP?)
Date: Tue, 2 Feb 1999 21:04:11 -0500

Attached is a debug log of what's happening with pppd.

My chat script seems to be working correctly (the ISP uses NT server with
ascii authentication, from what I can see). I login, get the ~ and start
pppd. That seems to work correctly. Then it looks like (in the attached
log) the server wants chap, but the client is rejecting it. It's rejecting
*something* atleast.

With a text login, why would the server want chap?

In any case, ppd connects, does some negotiating, fails and disconnects.

Can anyone shed some light on the matter?

samba & swat (Samba Web Administration Tool)

I installed samba 2.0 and swat.

I tried to setup samba by 'http://localhost:901/'.
I got the "username" and "password" prompt.

What should I put the username and password?
