Subject: RedHat notebook config as server & client?
Date: Mon, 10 May 1999 01:47:55 GMT

Background:
  Running Redhat 6 on
  Notebook computer with
PCMCIA card network adapter (Linksys ect2 10BaseT)

Objectives:
  1) want to be able to have my computer set up as a SERVER with its
own domain name and IP address so that it can serve other
     machines.

   2) want to be able to connect to other networks (as a CLIENT) with
my machine via the ethernet adaptor. These other networks may
or may not be using the DHCP.

The PCMCIA cardmgr seems to be working, inasmuch as at boot time eth0
is recognized. But I'm unable to connect to the network.

  Confusions:
1)First of all I am wondering whether I should just chuck Redhat
and switch to something else. Redhat changes things and then does not
seem to provide adequate(/any) documentation about the overrides it
makes to standard things like pcmcia configuration. I am surprised
since I have been impressed by the fact that free software like Linux
can have such extensive documentation available, and here is Redhat
with their great poplularity and almost non-existent documentation.
If there were some standard to Linux which Redhat just followed, this
wouldn't be a problem.

(I admit I am still to inexperienced with Linux to make any serious
assertions here. So far my only help has been the great book "Running
Linux". The Manual that comes with the $39 Redhat book is almost
completely useless. I've read the PCMCIA HOWTO several times through
and not enough of a wizard at shell scripting yet to make sense of
it.)

I have gone in several times and edited network configuration files
only to find that Redhat doesn't even use them. Maybe they just left
them behind for good looks. I don't know.

Am I supposed to be a "typical" Redhat user and use their "control"
panel? Okay, but Linuxconf has virtually no documentation to go along
with it, certainly not enough to handle more than the most basic
configuration issues.
I admit I am still a novice Linux user. But I feel there should be
some kind of documentation at www.redhat.com.

Hello all,

I have done the make steps outlined below and it still doesn't work. Where
can I get the source for net-pf-17 (presumably, Protocol Family 17)? I have
been able to use Ethernet out of the box on my machine before, so this is
quite confusing. Thanks in advance for the help,

Subject: Is this possible? (VPN+IPMASQ)

Hi-

Question for anyone who can shed some light for me...I'm new to Linux
and
loving it, and am trying to figure out a way to stay in Linux 100% of
the time.

Let me diagram this scenario:

 W | --> L o=========o V <-- | R

Legend
=====
| means firewall
- means private LAN
= means Internet
W = Win98 running VPN client
L = Linux box, RH6 (2.2.5) w/ IP MASQ 1.3.8, fixed IP
V = VPN server
R = Remote server behind firewall

What I want to do
============
- access the remote server behind the VPN server from my Linux box or my

Win98 client running behind IP MASQ

Background
========
I read through the Linux-VPN Howto but it didn't really answer my
question
that I could find. I can successfully log onto the VPN server and access
the
protected servers when I'm connected directly via Win98, but not (yet)
when
I'm running Linux or running Win98 behind IP MASQ. (I'd like to attempt
accessing it through VMware guest OS as well).

Any pointers or advice would be much appreciated. I'm pretty technical
and
a quck learner but am just getting into Linux networking.

Thanks,
Jeremy

1) Does the etc/hosts file give a machine the ability to do a reverse

2) If running a caching only DNS server can I define reverse DNS

Thanks in advance?

How did you "configure" it? Do you know what IRQ it or the modem
actually uses? A PnP card should be jumpered or otherwise configured
for a particular port and IRQ in Linux.

: for example this command that supposed to produce a dial tone:
: echo "ATDT\n" >/dev/modem
: doesn't produce it.

This won't produce a dial tone, there's nothing to tell the modem how
to direct a dial tone to the speaker.

: connecting to ISP doesn't work: for example this how it complains in
: /var/log/message:
: pppd[338]: pppd 2.3.3 started by denis, uid 501
: pppd[338]: tcgettattr :Input/Output error (5)

In every instance I know about this error has meant that another process
is using the same IRQ as the one configured in Linux for the device file.
that pppd is using.

: I did check that modem is at the right port (COM2 in win95 =
: /dev/modem ->/dev/cua1 in Linux, IRQ=3 soundcard IQ=5)

Check again. Doing "setserial /dev/cua1" will show the port and IRQ
that is configured for /dev/cua1 in Linux. Doing "cat /proc/interrupts"
will show the IRQs used by active devices. If you are using "/dev/modem"
for pppd, then make sure it points to the modem's device file.

I think what you are asking for is to do a Beowulf Cluster. Since you have
RedHat 5.2 you might want to go to RedHat's site and check out "Extreme
Linux". Extreme Linux is Beowulf.

I can't even attempt to guess unless you post all the chat messages and

need ppp entered if you don't know? The exact procedure for connecting
to an ISP varies widely.

: PS - this login/pwd and phone number all work great under windows so
thats all OK.

MS is supported by ISPs which gives it a huge advantage: the ISP sends
you software that configures the MS dialup programs to connect to them.
You don't need to know beans to get an MS product to connect but with
other OS's you've got to dig into things and find what's what before
you can connect.

Well, people have been told for years now that the cua ports are not to
be used, and still people keep using them.
DO NOT USE THE CUA ports.
Use the /dev/ttyS (/dev/ttyS0 in your case.

I know. All of the manuals still talk about cua, and things like
linuxconf make links to cua rather than ttyS. What can you do?

I have the same problem, only I'm using qmail to send out mail.
This solution works fine indeed, but there is one problem. My email

casema.net is local. What to do about this? I'd be thankful for
suggestions.

PS: I'm using fetchmail to grab my mail from my ISP, procmail to
deliver it (all to one account) and qmail to send. It's probably a
stupid setup, but it happens to work, apart from the problem mentioned
above.

Subject: Wacky PPP problem
Date: Sun, 09 May 1999 22:35:52 -0500

I installed RH6.0 recently and now ppp is acting funky. I am using the
same script as I've used the last 2.5 years to connect:

/usr/sbin/pppd connect '/usr/local/lib/ppp/redialer' /dev/cua0 38400 mru 552 crtscts
modem asyncmap 200a0000 defaultroute noipdefault

and I've set the executable to execute as root:

# ls -l /usr/sbin/pppd
-rwsr-xr-x 1 root root 120020 Apr 9 22:33 /usr/sbin/pppd

BUT, it won't connect, and I get the following log:

May 9 21:55:08 localhost kernel: registered device ppp0
May 9 21:55:08 localhost pppd[2230]: pppd 2.3.7 started by sam, uid 500
May 9 21:55:08 localhost pppd[2230]: Failed to open /dev/cua0: Permission denied
May 9 21:55:08 localhost pppd[2230]: Exit.

But then I become root, run it, and it runs fine. What's going on? By
setting pppd uid root, pppd should be able to write to /dev/cua0, right?
I don't see any thing in /etc/ppp that should make it behave strangely...
Thanks for any help.

I'm in that same leaky raft. There seems to be some sort of a clash,
possibly related to something in the startup that has links to the old
install. Here, I let it install v4.51 in the /opt/netscape directory,
and have cleaned up enough of the old stuff that when I run it from
AfterStep menu, it runs the new version. But, the old versions
directories don't seem to be deletable by any means short of doing a
mkfs on the partition.

I'm about the resort to tactical nukes here, unless someone can tell me
how to get rid of, once and for all, considering I'm logged in as root,
those "Operation not permitted" responses when I attempt to do a bit of
housecleaning.

For your three computers to share the IP adress of one, you need IP
masquerading.

The following HOWTOs would be what you're looking for:
 Firewall HOWTO
IPCHAINS HOWTO (if kernel > 2.1.130something)
 NET-3 HOWTO (probably)
 IP Masquerade mini-HOWTO
 Kernel HOWTO (probably)

All these are available at www.linux-howto.com
