I believe the soon-to-be-released (this week?) version of
Apache fixes the garbage collection fork per request.

Subject: Dial-up backup to DSL
Date: 3 Aug 1999 20:52:06 GMT

Anyone have any ideas on the best way to have an automatic backup for DSL?

The idea and setup:
One Slackware Linux box performing IP Masq. for a bunch of Windows
machine on a LAN. The Linux box would be connected to the Internet via
DSL, but needs to check somehow to see if the connection is live. If it
isn't, it needs to automatically dial up, send a page to the
administrator, and generally keep on with it's business (nothing but a
gateway).

Another idea would be to do the same with a Windows machine as the
gateway, but I've had a much easier time with Linux and IP Masq, than with
Windows and Wingate!

The important thing is to have those machines on the LAN always connected
to the Internet. Also, we can't have anyone manually dialing up.
Hopefully, with the DSL, we won't ever need the dial-up back up, but we
need to have it available and working.

Any ideas? Thanks,
-Anja

Linux does a reverssed lookup of the hosts IP address, thats why it takes so
long when you don't have the host name. Linux will use the hostname for several
things like variables and loging so it makes things easier.

When you have alot of machines on your network, than I suggest you install DNS.
The package is called BIND in the Unix world. I suggest you use BIND version 8
it is the newest.

Subject: Re: win95->linux routing

[posted and mailed]
I struggled with this too. W95 does have a rudimentary 'route' command
which you can run from the dos prompt. Good luck seeing its help
output since it scrolls off the screen - but I think somewhere in the
Windows help system is more info on route. The problem is that the
simple router stuck in W95 has difficulty with multiple routes - it
thinks, I'm either connected to the LAN, or I'm on a PPP connection to
the Internet, and I can have only ONE route. What you can try is
pick some innocuous IP numbers for your own home LAN - 192.68.1.1 for
Linux, 192.68.1.2 for w95, then on w95 from the dos prompt say
something like
route add 192.68.1.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 gateway 192.68.1.2 metric 2
But that might not be right as I am doing this from memory. And I can't
recall if it worked! just that I had the same problem. I think what
happens is that if the PPP connection is up, there's no IP connectivity
to your LAN, no matter what you do. Can't hurt to try , though.

Things will work much better if you put the modem and ISP connection on
the Linux box which can actually route correctly. Then enable IP
forwarding in the kernel with
echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forwarding
and set up IP-Masquerade (metalab.unc.edu/pub/Linux/docs/mini/IP-
Masquerade and ./Diald should get you started). A pain to set up, but
once you're done, it works great.

You can either boot with the boot disk mount your volume and delete all
the entries for ipconfig (wich sets up your card), you can also remove the
card from your system reconfigure it.
Or use append in the lilo command line to give it the right addr and IRQ.
It is probably a hardware conflict.

Change / add the follwoing lines to your senmdail.cf
Cwhostname
f.i. Cwsmtp
Cj$w.domainname
fi.
Cj$w.yahoo.com

Also add/change
Dmdomainname
f.i.
Dmyahoo.com

Now restart sendmail and it will work.

What Cw does, is that it tells sendmail wich host it is.
Cj$w. tells sendmail what it's FQDN is.
Dm masquerades all the email so it won't say [EMAIL PROTECTED] but
[EMAIL PROTECTED] instead.

Subject: PPP Server Problem - no "outside" IP access
Date: 03 Aug 1999 15:59:04 PDT

I am trying to setup a PPP server on my Linux (2.2) machine to allow me
to dial-in and use the internet.

I am using mgetty to enable dial-in. I am using the AutoPPP option to
start pppd when the modem connects. That all seems to work fine.
However, I can only ping the PPP server, but NOTHING else.

I have the proxyarp option set in /etc/ppp/options, so I think it should
be proxying IP addresses for the ppp0 device.

I've read the FAQs and HOWTOs, but it doesn't seems to address this
problem. Any help would be great.

Thanks in advance.

Sorry, it was a typo - it's actually called 'tcdpchk'. If
it's really missing, you can download the TCP Wrappers from
here:

   ftp://ftp.porcupine.org/pub/security/

This is in .tar.bz format BTW, if you need a Red Hat .rpm
then check at your "usual places".

Strange. Follow the advice of the previous poster, ie.
make sure that your "lo" interface is up & running,
and double-check your firewall rules, if any.

Good luck,

Subject: Transparent Proxy
Date: Tue, 03 Aug 1999 12:04:14 -0600

Howdy,
I have read through the Ipchains HowTo and the man pages, but have
been unable to come up with examples that would assist me.
I have set up a Linux firewall using ipchains 1.3.9 running RedHat
Linux 6.0 with kernel 2.2.10. I have made sure that Transparent IP is
enabled, etc. I have an old Western Digital NIC and a SMC Ultra both of
which work great. When I do an "ifconfig -a" I am able to see both eth0
and eth1. I can ping them and through them with no problem.
What I want to do is set this box up between us and our DSL customers
so that ports 137 and 139 would be blocked. But I want the box itself
to be invisible and have it simply block any packets from these ports
from going through.
Here's a schematic that I hope will help.

                .-------.
                | Router |
                '-------`
                    |
                    |
                .-------.
                | HUB |
                `-------'
                    |
                    | outer device # 206.71.77.72
        .-----------------------.
        | Firewall |
        | (Linuxbox) |
        `-----------------------'
                    | inner device # 206.71.77.78
                    |
                    |
                .-------.
                | HUB |
                `-------'
                    |
                    |
               .--------. # 206.71.77.55
               | Winbox | # later I will replace this one Winbox
with the DSL customers through the main hub.
               `--------'

The .55 Winbox needs to be able to surf and I should be able to ping it
from outside the firewall, but that's it.
Any sugggestions for simply blocking packets from these ports and
preventing us and them from seeing each other in the Network
Neighborhood would be most appreciated. They still need to be able to
surf the web and such, but they should not be able to see each other.
    Thanks.
KJ

Red Hat seems popular right now. I use Slackware. I think you could
get most any of the distributions to work. The minimum Slackware
install I use needed about 25M of the disk. There is a nice
distribution for use in routers

This depends. I use another machine to do all compiles and don't have
any development tools on the FW machine.

Check the documentation of the program you are using to establish a DHCP
link. For Red Hat's pump you use the -h option in the command line. (I
had to change the network-script in /etc/sysconfig to do this.)

Cut from metalab.unc.edu/pub/Linux/docs/HOWTO/Printing-HOWTO:
edit your /etc/printcap and tell it the name of the remote
machine the printer is on ('rm' for remote machine)
e.g.:
lp|dj|deskjet:\
        :sd=/var/spool/lpd/dj:\
        :rm=machine.out.there.com:\
        :rp=printername:\
        :lp=/dev/null:\
        :sh:
But don't just use this example - read the relevant sections
of the HOWTO and it will become crystal clear.

Yuo shoudl setup masquerading in the kernel.
That add the right ipchains rules.

And set the default agteway address from all clients to point to the linuxbox
wich has the ppp adapter.
You can do this with route add gw 192.168.1.1 (f.i.)

Subject: ppp problem, symptom: bad ping packets
Date: Tue, 03 Aug 1999 23:13:13 GMT

Help!

Today I noticed that my PPP connection was showing lousy performance,
running telnet, some downloading, and lynx.

Pinging the other end of my PPP connection exhibited a strange behavior:
packets came through fine, EXCEPT when an HTTP connection was active.
Whenever I fetched a web page using Netscape, WWWoffle, or Lynx, I
started seeing lots of "wrong data byte #8 should be 0x68 was 0x63"
messages.

Once the HTTP transaction was complete, the packets would start
coming through clean again.

Also, the average turnaround time was about 270 ms, but ran up to
7-8 sec. during those "bad spells".

Finally, HTTP seems to be special: telnet, ftp, ping and ssh do not
seem to provoke this problem.

Is this a Linux bug? Performance degrades horribly whenever I'm using
the web! Help!

Subject: Question about IPCHAINS HOWTO - IP Spoofing
Date: Tue, 03 Aug 1999 23:27:23 GMT

I think I've almost got my system set up for ipchains, but I got one
question. In section 5.7 of the ipchains howto it says:

The best way to protect from IP spoofing is called Source Address
verification, and it is done by the routing code, and not firewalling at
all. Look for a file called /proc/sys/net/ipv4/conf/all/rp_filter. If
this exists, then turning on Source Address Verification at every boot is
the right solution for you. To do that, insert the following lines
somewhere in your init scripts, before any network interfaces are .....

Okay so I'm a bit of a newbie but are the init scripts that they are
referring to in the /etc/init.d directory (using RH 6.0) or are there
some other init scripts? I think then that all I have to do is make a
script and make sure that it gets loaded before network and I'm money.

Any feedback would be appreciated,

sean

I installed the dhcpcd package from the RH6.0 cd and to my surprise the
files:
/etc/dhcpc/dhcpcd-eth0.info
/etc/dhcpc/dhcpcd-eth0.exe
/etc/dhcpc/dhcpcd-eth0.cache
were not there. Do I have to create these?
