Here is the Trip.

I have been hassling Charter Cable about there choice of Cable modems.
Up until a month ago they were trying to tell me that the VSP external
3com cable modem would probably be able to be used from Unix based
computers. Well after looking into the external versions. I made my
calls to 3com. Well the external will not be able to be used under
linux. The way it was explained to me. Is that they are only working
on the drivers for Win* and Macs.

So I called Charter again. Mainly just to have a official complaint
about there lack of support for anything other than Win*. This time I
got a little farther up the phone chain. I got transferred up what
seems to be 3 levels of management. I got a Mac user. Seems he's been
pissed about not being able to use the Pipeline service. ( hahaha )
Well what He told me is that the reason 3com is working on Mac drivers
is because they had pressure from Charter Pipeline users and Charter
Cable Mac users.

When I asked if he had heard of other *nix users. He said that "He has
not heard of any *nix user complaints." He also added that they were
not very happy with the 3com solution that Charter had gone with. and
that Charter was considering going to hardware similar to the hardware
that @home and TCI cable are using.

I'm paying 45 dollars a month to boot to Windows in order to download
Linux software. From the amount of e-mail I have gotten on this
subject. I would have to assume ( a ass of u and me ) that there are
more Linux users out there doing the same damn thing.

( Side note: It was suggested to me by a tech that I set up a win95
computer that I could run wingate on and then I could use my linux
computer's web browser. This really pissed me off. I used to have a
Linux 486DX33mhz with 4 meg of ram that had a ISDN modem in it. It did
a hell of allot more than let me use a web browser on another computer.
Like have 3 friends bring there computers over and play quake2 on the
net. Can you even install win95 on a 486DX33mhz with 4 meg of ram? )

Bottom Line is that people need to start calling the Pipeline Tech
support and ask to speak to the manager on duty. They then need to
explain that you are considering canceling there service unless they
have a *nix friendly solution to using Charter Pipeline. Even If you
don't have Charter Pipeline and are a Charter Cable I urge you to call
and tell them that you have no intention of using Charter Pipeline
unless they have a *nix friendly solution.

Seems like 3com is pawning these modems off on Charter because they have
a contract. It smells allot like a WinCable modem. But I don't think
3com is the one that should be targeted.

If you do decide to call:

1. Please be nice.
2. Asked to speak to a manager.
3. Inform him that you would like to make a official complaint.

Thank you for taking the out to reading this.
I hope it did not reek of the 'C' I got in ENG201 ( 8 years ago ) too
bad.

Subject: User Limits
Date: Mon, 08 Feb 1999 09:28:32 GMT

Hi,

I'm writing a program which connects to a server lots of times. I have
discovered that under Linux, the program can only connect about 240 times
before it stops creating sockets. I eventually tracked this down to the limit
on file descriptors from which I discovered the command 'limit'.

However, here I am stuck because I can't work out how to set the file
descriptors above 256. The command

limit descriptors 1024

fails with

limit: descriptors: Can't set limit

Even with -h, I can't seem to set the limit higher than 256.

Does anybody know if there is any way of setting this limit any higher than
256?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
   Rob.

That figures. I mean, it fits with your description of the situation.

I also suspect a cabling problem or a problem with the hub. From a
quick scan, your setup looks ok and if your machines make it to the
hub, it seems like they're transmitting alright as well. Can the hub
be configured?

I'm snipping what looks ok or I don't wish to comment in the
following.

Looks good. You might want to disable the broadcast and multicast
flags when you get networking done, unless you know you need them.

bipolar's routing table looks ok.

[bipolar cannot ping 192.168.1.254, can ping localhost (resolved to
127.0.0.1), can ping bipolar (expanded to bipolar.bellsouth.net,
resolved to 192.168.1.2)]

OK, the symptoms you describe.

><!-- begin skitzo stats,
>     RH5.1 on i486 with a ISA SMC EtherEZ NIC -->

Routing table looks ok.

[skitzo can ping localhost (resolved to 127.0.0.1), can not ping
192.168.1.2]

>It all looks good to me, anyone see any problems?

Nope. I think it's either the cabling, the hub or the NIC
configuration. Cabling is unlikely because both machines' signals make
it to the hub. The same reason makes it seem that the NICs are
configured properly. It looks to me like the hub is not forwarding the
network packets correctly or maybe it isn't building up its arp cache
properly. AFAIK, a hub operates like a bridge, is in fact a multi-port
bridge and as such learns the MAC addresses available on its ports and
routes network packets by this knowledge. OTOH, I believe that they
(hubs) resort to broadcasts if an unknown destination MAC address is
used..

Have you tried connecting the machines directly by using a crossover
cable? That could offer a sign as to whether the hub is working
correctly or not.

In which routing table, please? And a route for 255.255.255.0 doesn't
make much sense practically, that's most probably a netmask, not an
address.

Could be. Could you post/email me more information concerning your
network topology, your NIC configurations and your routing table (i.e.
the output of 'ifconfig' and 'route -n' on the Linux box), please?

Do you call them exactly as they appear above, i.e. with variable
names $NETWORK, $NETMASK and $GATEWAY? Or do you substitute the
appropriate values? I expect there is an error with these variables in
rc.inet1. Try inserting the line 'echo ${NETWORK} ; echo ${NETMASK} ;
echo ${GATEWAY}' before the commands you quote in rc.inet1. If the
output doesn't appear on the screen, append ' > /dev/stdout' to the
echo commands or pipe their output to a file and examine that. You
want to know what the content of those three variables is, so you can
reconstruct the exact route commands that are being executed.

>Is route being called from somewhere else too?

Dunno. grep for route in your boot directory. I don't know RHs boot
sequence since I use a SuSE system. Your documentation should tell you
what directories and files are accessed at bootup.

>Note also that:
>ifconfig also looks good (except RX and TX are always 0)

You should still include the output of both these commands, even if
only to be told they're ok. It gives us a much better background on
your situation/setup.

>But, when I just run "route" from the command line, expecting output like
>the netstat -rn, I get only the first 2 lines (eht0, lo), then it hangs

It's trying to resolve the IP addesses to names. Call 'route -n'
instead and it should give you the same output as 'netstat -rn'. Or
wait for a while until the DNS lookup times out.

Well, if the route isn't installed properly, no network packets are
going to get onto the wire, so you've probably found the problem
location. Now you need to find out what the actual command looks like
that's causing the error.

Yes there is a way. One solution is to build a proxy with Apache
(www.apache.org). This will give you the flexibility to limit and
control web access. There is a pretty good article on how to do this in
the last sys-Admin magazine, february issue (www.samag.com)

Hmm. I wont start an emacs versus vi flame war here. Both are highly
customisable (read: complicated ??) editors, and it would be worth your while
learning how to use one eventually. However, to start with I'd recommend pico.
pico is a rather simple text editor/viewer, but is ample to get you started...

first, your www.second.com has to resolve to the same address

second, you have to change your virtual server setup in httpd.cond or
srm.conf...

mine is in /etc/httpd/conf

find where you see second.first.com and add www.second.com and any other
aliases for it.

The Alpha is a CPU. Compaq still owns that portion of Digital Semiconductor.
Compaq sold off the networking and PCI bridge components to Intel. I doubt if
we'll see any more DEC 21x4x 'Tulip' based NICs since they are competition for
the Intel counterparts.

Hmm. I wont start an emacs versus vi flame war here. Both are highly
customisable (read: complicated ??) editors, and it would be worth your while
learning how to use one eventually. However, to start with I'd recommend pico.
pico is a rather simple text editor/viewer, but is ample to get you started...

Subject: ip masquerading problem
Date: Mon, 08 Feb 1999 19:56:23 GMT

I have recently set up ip_masq and forwarding . Im running linux 2.0.36.

I have my cable modem going into my linux box and a 2nd nic going to my
Win pc. After reboot i am able to ping my Win pc from my linux box and
vice versa. I am also able to briefly surf the net from my Win pc
(loads about 3 pages) before it stops getting a response from the linux
box. I am still able to surf from the linux box, but now trying to ping
the win pc gets no response. Pinging 10.0.0.1 still receives a response.

Any ideas why the linux box is dropping the ip and not responding to
10.0.0.2?

Thanks for any help

Rick
