The ip address of the source machine needs to be in the hosts file of the
destination machine.
Good luck!

Qpopper is easy to configure and runs well. It has a bulletins option if
you want to be able to provide common messages to your customers without
actually sending them an email. It doesn't run standalone. It supports APOP.
Cucipop has the capability to run standalone and also supports APOP.

Hi,
Does anyone know where I can find docs on creating virtual links for my
FTP server? Is this something that I should look for from the
FTPDaemon, or from the OS itself? I have looked through the linux docs
and not found anything addressing creating vitual links. I want my

I am using ProFTPD.

Subject: NFS-Root - unable to find init
Date: Sun, 08 Aug 1999 01:55:46 GMT
Hello,
I am attempting to remote boot a Linux client off a Linux server using
NFS as the root directory for the client. The client initializes the
network card correctly, mounts the NFS root directory, then complains
that it can not find the init program. The exact error is:
Kernel panic : no init found. Try passing init= option to kernel
/sbin/init does exist under the exported client root directory, as does
/bin/sh, which should be started if /sbin/init can not be found.
The NFS server is functioning as I can mount the client root directory
on another machine and access the above programs. The client root
directory is exported as (rw,no_root_squash).
The server is running Red Hat 6.0. I compiled a kernel (2.2.5-31 ? -
what comes with Red Hat 6.0) with NFS root support for the client.
The kernel is being loaded via bpbatch with the following options:
"root=/dev/nfs nfsroot=192.168.0.1:/export/stbRoot
nfsaddr=${BOOTP-Your-IP}:192.168.0.1::255.255.255.0::none"
According to rpc.mountd, the machine requests the mount, and
authorization is granted.
Any help would greatly be appreciated.
Thank You,
Raymond Huber

Subject: Any advice for "bizarre" Network Collisions?
Date: Sat, 7 Aug 1999 18:52:03 -0700
First off I', running Debian w/2.0.36 on a multi-homed 486 with eth0 static
IP via DSL and eth0 to 4 port hub. LAN fills remaining ports by use of 3
win98 machines, ie. myself and neighbors. IPFWADM works well and throughput
is great. I noticed the problem I'm having when transferring files via smb,
Samba 2.05a-src, but then after some tests via FTP and simple telnet I
continued to see excess network collisions. All the network cards are
identical 3c509. What I dont understand is why this doesn't happen during
transfers via external routes, but still through the same cards. I
originally thought about checking my duplex settings on the cards but this
seems too inconsistent for that to be the cause. Please relay any ideas you
many have or where to start looking.

You can get rid of that message with these entries in /etc/conf.modules
alias ppp-compress-21 bsd-comp
alias ppp-compress-24 off
alias ppp-compress-26 off
However this probably won't affect you problems with you domain name server.
For that I can only suggest to check that the domain name server is set
correctly (in the network section under the control-panel (with RH)).

Subject: Linux vs. NT Challenge

Ok here's the deal:
Objective:
==========
Provide reliable, stable, speedy file sharing access/storage for
digital video editing team through any means necessary.
Seconday Objectives (wish-list):
================================
-Keep costs down and minimize time it takes to install/configure
-Allow for remote administration
-Minimize downtime (scheduled/unscheduled) to no more than
2 hours / month for any reason (hardware, software, etc) other
than Acts of God
Specifics:
==========
- Digital Video Editing team consists of 8 (growing to 10)
Blue & White 400mhz G3 Macs running MacOS 8.51
(need AppleShare IP access)
- IS Dept will need access to files for archival purposes from
WindowsNT workstations and servers
(need SMB access)
Hardware available:
===================
- Compaq DeskPro 400
-Processor: Intel Celeron 400 (128KB full-clock cache)
-RAM: 128MB RAM
-HD: 6.4GB IDE (for OS only)
-SCSI: Adaptec 2940U2W
-External Storage: 2 Externally controlled RAID-5 storage units
w/ 72GB storage/unit
(will be presented as one drive to the OS, no OS incompat.
or software RAID needed)
-Compaq NC3121 Netelligent 10/100BaseTX adapter It uses an
Intel chipset, but I"m not sure which one, will get more
info (has the capability for NIC teaming for Network
fault-tolerance which is a plus. NIC Teaming is an Intel
protocol, there might be a linux driver for it)
-Optional Adapter: Bay Networks NetGear FA310TX 10/100TX
Non-essential components:
-Video: Matrox G100 AGP 8mb
-Sound ESS Audio Drive (1688 I believe, I can check on that)
Note: These machines have been the most reliable non-server PC I
have ever had the pleasure as an administrator to work with.
I have ordered 40 in the past 5 months and have not had a
one fail on me. I prefer Teir-1 PCs to home-built PCs because
of support, warranty and stability issues.
Etcetera:
=========
I am 22 and have been working in the computer industry for almost 4
years now. I was first taught the joys of network/IS administration
on a Novell NetWare 3.12 box. I later learned on 4.11. We eventually
moved to NT for obvious reasons. I joined a consulting firm and
worked exclusively with NT for small/medium sized businesses. I like
MS products and I am confident in NT's abilities. I believe that all
the misinformation about NT being unstable and unsecure is mainly do
to mis-configuration and poorly trained/competent administrators.
I run our website on NT/IIS/ASP & Cold Fusion and we get about 10k
hits/day and run heavy databasing through SQL. We also run our internal
operations solely on NT. I have not had to reboot either of our web
servers or any of our internal servers in over 5 months. I firmly
believe that, if properly configured and running on solid hardware,
NT will meet or beat any other server OS in most tasks.
Having said that, I am not necessarily biased against any OS (well,
I'm not fond of NetWare, OS/2, and AIX, but most others are ok).
I have installed RedHat 5.1,5.2, and 6.0 in a number of different
configurations, but I would not call myself an expert by any sense
of the word. I am vaguely familiar with configuring SAMBA. I have
no experience with netatalk, but am familiar with how AppleTalk
works and am fairly confident that I could get it running. I like
linux and I'm sure that it can pull through for me on this task,
but due to my lack of knowledge, I don't feel that I could give
linux a fair run in this competition.
- I have used the Compaq DeskPros in numerous configurations and I trust
them
completely. At this time, what we're doing (just file sharing) doesn't
purchasing a whole server like a Proliant 1600 or something
- The external rage storage units I trust completely. I've been using them
for
about 5 months (we have 10 of them) and have only had 2 drive failures,
but
the RAIDs themselves have performmed flawlessly.
- Currently, we have 1 SCSI controller w/ 2 RAIDs on it (144 GB) running NT
Server 4.0 SP4 w/ Services for Macintosh on a Dell OptiPlex GL. I have
never been impressed with the Dells and I fear that it will give up any
day now with the stress it's under. It has run for 5 months straight
with
only one reboot due to power failure.
What I need from you (the linux expert(s)):
========================================
Given my lacking knowledge of linux, the costs/time for me to set
up a scientific comparison of linux vs NT would have NT winning
every time. So, I want to make this as fair as possible.
I have an open mind here, and I WANT to learn linux, and I would
be happy to see linux win/meet objectives in this test.
I am familiar with tuning an NT box to be a slick filesharing
bad boy, but I am not familiar with doing this in linux.
I will be using RedHat 6.0 for my linux distro since I am the
most familiar with it.
Here's what I need:
-During the install process, what options/components should I
disable (besides the obvious like FTP, HTTP, SendMail, NFS, etc)
-Once installed, is there any settings I need to manipulate to
optimize the kernel for maximum IP filesharing throughput?
-I am going to partition out the hard drive for NT and linux, I'm
planning on splitting down the middle, 3.2GB for NT, 3.2GB for linux
however, I can slide it either way. Will 3.2 be adequate for linux?
-What is needed (if anything) to tune Samba for maximum throughput?
-What is needed (if anything) to tune netatalk for maximum throughput?
-Should I use netatalk, or is there a better product out there?
(Commercial is acceptable and I am willing to buy a software if it
makes a huge difference)
-What format should I format the RAID unit? ext2? Is that the
best high-performance FS that linux has, or is there a "better" one?
-Any routine admin tasks that I will need to perform - defrag, fschk,
etc. How often should I defrag? The files will be video files and
will be copied up to the server. The files range from 800MB - 2GB
but are usually 800MB - 1.2GB. They will copy about 6-10 at a time
and they will sit there for about week until they are archived and
later deleted.
-Anything Else I'm going to need to know? (any particulars about the
SCSI adaptor? Anything about the Video Adapter?)
I'm not planning on running X, but it would be nice to have everything
working, but if the sound/video don't work, no biggy, I will just chalk
it up to Compaq hardware or Linux still gearing up for larger driver
production.
-If I later decide to add another SCSI controller and another RAID, will
this cause any problems? Any known bugs with Adaptec and multiple
controllers on Linux?
Details of the test:
====================
-the computer will have a full 100TX connection to a switch
-I will plug my test Mac into the switch as well.
-I will setup NT server on the one partition, optimize for filesharing and
configure SFM. I"ll format the RAID NTFS and then copy several files from
the Mac. The video files are Quicktime 3 MOV files and usually around
1.2GB a piece. I will choose an uncompressed Quicktime file that is
around 1.2GB. I will get exact numbers later. I will copy the file
to the NT SFM volume and time it. I will do this 3 times and take the
average time.
-I will then setup linux on the other partition and I will format the RAID
with
the recommended FS. I will also configure netatalk (or another
recommended
atalk sharing program) in the recommended performance mode and then copy
the
files again to the linux shared atalk volume 3 times and time it. I will
take the average of the 3 as the time.
-I will time the time it takes me to install and configure both OSs from the
time I boot up the machine to the time I get up to start copying the
files
from the Mac machine.
-I will document all costs required to install the system including:
-OS Cost (WindowsNT Server 180-day trial: Free; RH6.0 Linux: Free)
(We will only need this for the next 3 months or so, by then
we will have more demand and will have to purchase a full server,
at which point I will run this test again, factoring a full purchase
price of NT Server)
-Time needed to install at $30/hour. That's not really what I make, but
I don't really want to publish my salary on the internet, I'm sure you
understand. $30 is a nice even number and is about what the average sys
admin makes
-Estimated costs of routine admin tasks and any other tasks that will be
needed. I estimate about 2 hours of admin time/month with NT needed to
defrag and run chkdsk and make sure that everything is in order. What
would be a good estimate for Linux? Probably about 2 hours/m, that is
a pretty typical number for most OSs.
-I will add up the costs and derive a price/performance baseline for making
the decision as to who is the "winner".
Summary:
========
I'm counting on you experts to come through on me. Since there is no one
place
I can call for this information, I need you to help me out and come through
for
me. Prove to me that Linux is worth all the hype and propaganda I hear about
it
Prove to me that perhaps I should dump NT and move to Linux!
Thank you very much!!
If you ever need any help configuring and tuning an NT server to be
reliable,
stable, and secure, just let me know, I can help you out!!
