Hi,
I am running Open Linux 1.3 and Red Hat and I would like to set up a
dial up server. I have a standard Hayes compatible modem (56k) connected
to serial port 2 (com2:) and would like to dial in form work to home.
Can anybody please help me.
Thanks

Date: Fri, 14 May 1999 01:53:27 +0200
I am trying to use karpski-0.101 (a network sniffer) on my Linux server
box, however it behaves very unstable and sometimes throws a segment
violation. This can be easily triggered by opening a watch window and
then drag some windows around. After a while it breaks...
Does anyone knows if this is gtk 1.2 related (which I use) problem or a
normal 'feature' of karpski?

Get a updated driver. There has been a lot of 'transmit timeout' as
reasons for new rtl8139 drivers.
http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/rtl8139.html
And a couple of days ago i got rtl8139.c :
'rtl8139.c:v1.06c 5/6/99 Donald Becker'
Try it. I've got it, but have not compiled it yet.
(it is among other cards set up to find:
"Accton MPX5030 (RealTek RTL8139)"
and i wonder if it supports the Accton card with a MPX5038 on it.. or
if that is something else. A local shop sell it, and i hope it is
something else than a RTL8139...
It looks like the:
http://hq.accton.com.tw/accton/products/adapters/en1207d_wol/specs.html
But i only got a fast glimpse.)

However, if I do an ftp ipaddress or telnet ipaddress, it says connected,

Just put welcome.msg in the /home/ftp directory. Make sure to enable read access.
Yes it is possible to make /home/ftp as / when accessed through a ftp client.
I dont know the exact steps but it is something to do with links(like shortcuts in
win95).
I beleive it is a hard link you need. Sorry I couldnt help more.

I don't run Redhat so I can't help there.
Did you follow the diald directions about compiling the kernel with
slip support, etc. You won't see a ppp0 until a connection is made.
I have no option in /etc/ppp/options. Everything is in /etc/diald.conf.
My /etc/diald.conf looks like this:
device /dev/cua2
connect "/etc/diald/muscanet"
speed 115200
modem
lock
crtscts
defaultroute
#mtu 576
#mru 576

ip-up /etc/diald/timeup
ip-down /etc/diald/timedown
include /usr/local/lib/diald/standard.filter
fifo /etc/diald/diald.ctl
The connect script is just the one that came with diald that I modified
for my situation. Just changed password, phone number, and login name.
Good luck.

Try specifying both IP addresses. I used
pppd 192.168.0.1:192.168.0.2 ipcp-accept-local ipcp-accept-remote demand ...
I got the same ioctl message for a couple of other cut-and-tries but this
one worked for me. Oh, and you likely need to setup for dynamic IPs with
"echo -n 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_dynaddr" in a boot setup file.
Should this not work and/or you really need to specify the address of
the peer then try other address pairs, e.g. 192.168.0.1:208.277.232.81,
or you may need something like 208.277.232.81:208.277.232.81 so as to
have both the local and remote IP address belong to the same network.

My cable modem is really slow in Linux. When I'm web browsing I download at
a rate of about 500 bytes/sec as opposed to 50Kbps in Winbloze. When I first
start a big download it starts very quickly, but then it "stalls" and the
bps rate drops rapidly. I think it may have to do with the packet sizes or
something. Can anyone help????

Subject: trouble pinging
Date: Thu, 13 May 1999 21:54:25 -0500
I have two computers on a small home network: one is running windows 95 and
the other Debian linux v2.1. Both have D-link NICS(the windows is a DE-528,
the linux is DE-220). I have both of the cards configured correctly and the
linux box uses a ne-2000 compatible isa driver. both computers can ping
themselves and eth0 does show up when I run ifconfig. The network also shows
up correctly in the routing table. But when i ping the linux computer from
windows 95 and vice versa, it times out. if i run tcpdump on linux and then
ping it from windows 95 it shows that the linux box is receving the request
and that it is sending a return packet, but the windows 95 ping still times
out. I have even tried running a win95 packet sniffer and found the same
results when I ping from linux.
What could I be doing wrong?

Subject: PPP to Cicso CHAP ISDN PRI Card
Date: Fri, 14 May 1999 02:50:55 GMT
Hello all,
I have been bashing my head in trying to have my RedHat 5.2 box connect
via PPP to a Cisco ISDN PRI (7813 I believe) using CHAP. I have set entries
in the pap-secrets file and chap-secrets files as per instruction. The only
thing that I have not done is to supply addresses in these files.
Now the problem is that when I dial via my Motorola Bitsurfer Pro, I
connect and the remote side sends me what I think is the first step in
authoriztion (appears as consistant lines of garbage in the
/var/log/messages file). The remote side sends me these lines every 3 or 4
seconds but my Linux box does not seem to ever respond (based on my logs and
no activity on the TA's transmit data LED). The remote side may send me 10
attempts but my side does not ever send a thing and I get the pppd script
failed message. I used the RedHat network config tool to configure this and
call 'ifup ppp0' to initiate a connection.
When I attempt to place the line 'auth' in my options file I receive an
error such as authentication required but no suitable secrets found. Since
CHAP must be used and placed entries in the files why are my entries not
being found? Am I perhaps missing something in my options file? I tried
using the 'name' and 'user' lines in my options file but still no-go.
Any ideas? Please........ I have a feeling I have missed one silly
parameter in this case. Never fails.....
Thank You in advance

Nope, I think I'm on the right track. But I didn't make the
distinction between controlerless and softmodems. I tended
to bundle them into the same group. Technicly they should
be separate.
Also, DSP modems may or may not be controlerless. It
all depends on the 'smarts' that are programed into the DSP.
Not all DSP modems need to be loaded at boot time.
Flash ROM can be loaded once, then only needs to be
reloaded for software updates and bug fixes. Can
you see the attraction of the DSP based modem?
(for the manufacturer anyway).
On the otherhand Flash memory costs more than RAM.
So it can be left off and all memory funtions handled
by RAM. That kind would have to be reloaded at boot
time.
And now risking the ire of the group. --no snippage--

Just my $0.02 worth.
Hope this helps,

Seems to be doing the same at irq10 and 7 as it was at 9. I can ping
192.168.1.1 --but nothing else.
INKY /root]# cat /proc/interrupts
CPU0
0: 77288 XT-PIC timer
1: 797 XT-PIC keyboard
2: 0 XT-PIC cascade
4: 32691 XT-PIC serial
5: 68539 XT-PIC soundblaster
7: 0 XT-PIC NE2000
8: 2 XT-PIC rtc
12: 27308 XT-PIC PS/2 Mouse
13: 1 XT-PIC fpu
14: 101342 XT-PIC ide0
15: 25 XT-PIC ide1
NMI: 0
[root@BLINKY /root]# ping 192.168.1.2
PING 192.168.1.2 (192.168.1.2): 56 data bytes
--- 192.168.1.2 ping statistics ---
2 packets transmitted, 0 packets received, 100% packet loss
I don't know what irq # it used to work at --it was about a year ago that it
was setup that way. 5.1 was installed to my box through the card at a Linux
friendly store. I never actually needed the card 'til now.
I edited conf.modules like you suggested and I removed the pre-existing eth0
reference
so that it now looks like this:
alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc
pre-install pcmcia_core /etc/rc.d/init.d/pcmcia start
alias sound sb
pre-install sound insmod sound dmabuf=1
options opl3 io=0x388
alias midi awe_wave
post-install awe_wave /bin/sfxload /etc/midi/GU11-ROM.SF2
options sb dma16=5 io=0x220 mpu_io=0x330 irq=5 dma=1
alias eth0 ne
options ne io=0x300 irq=7
(also tried irq10 first)
I am rebooting between changes because I noticed that the address in
/proc/interrupts wasn't changing along with changes to conf.modules even though
I restarted the kernel daemon (hit the button for it) through kernelcfg. Also I
am checking to make sure these Irq's are not turned off in the BIOS (10 was
disabled, but I turned it on to 'primary' before trying)
When I attempt to ping the G3 the LED on the hub should blink some right? Any
other configuration files that I need to know about --like routing stuff?
