Isn't this just a mini-distro of linux, made just for routing?

I plan to use my existing RH52 installation, with a PPP modem connection to
my ISP as my default gateway. I want to masquerade my local ip adresses
(192.168.1.1, 192.168.1.2) through the dhcp issued address from the ISP, with
NAT.

Is there any good place to start looking for info about this?

I just tested it on my own private network and it worked fine.

Just remember to restart your inetd after you edit the services file.

Well, it might be downgrading then. But remember that if you are using Red
Hat you should consider recompiling those libraries from the original
packages anyway, even though you are using the "same" version - Red Hat
tends to make their own modifications to about everything so you can't
expect any of the libraries that come with RH to be "standard".

That would be the best solution, but I don't have a clue about where to
find the sources..

And has some javascript security holes which allow a web server maintainer
to brewse your harddisk. 4.08 does not have this hole.

Read up on smbclient, smb.conf & smbmount. You'll need to make
appropriate settings in your smb.conf and I assume you have samba
started. If everything is configured correctly, you should see your
linux shares on your win boxes.

Date: Sat, 13 Feb 1999 17:32:15 GMT

Hi,

I am planning on installing either RedHat 5.2 or SuSE 5.2 (PCPlus
Edition) on my 2.1Gb HDD.

My dad has his modem shared on a win98 machine.

How would I go about making linux connect to the internet through the
win98 machine.

What do I need to set Gateway ,DNS, etc to and how would I get DNS to
work correctly. I don't know what to put in the domain search, yet I'm
told I HAVE to put something there. (I've tried once before but had to
uninstall because my third HDD broke down)

Any advice and pointers greatly appreciated

yeah. familiar situation. Whne I asked those morons "do you support Linux?"
They said "uhhh we support NT..."
Anyway, you can read the howtos at www.linux.org/help and
www.linux-howto.com. You will need 2 network cards in your Linux box, one
will connect to the local network and the other to the rest of the world via
cable modem. To set up the Linux box as a gateway you do exactly the same
thing as if it were a regular modem. Read the IP masquerading howto.

And here is my Linux box, connected to the net via cable 24x7,
www.happypenguin.dyn.ez-ip.net (ftp and mail server also working)

I had similar problems: the network connection was OK, but only at 10Mbits.
The easiest solution is to buy another NIC.

Well, almost nothing. The DNS entries need to point to a valid DNS
machine. PPP usually does this for dial-up networking, but you have to
do it manually for static IP's. The Linux box also needs to be the
default gateway.

Check out the article at ...
http://www.eunuchs.org/linux/samba.html

The only thing it doesn't make clear is a change you need to make in
/etc/rd.d/init.d/smb ... change the line that reads daemon nmbd -D to read
nmbd -D -G workgroup-name

BTW ... I'm told -G is obsolete, but my system needs it. Go figure!

Just realized that the downloaded netscapes are all statically linked together,
so no use to change any libraries whatsoever.

I was a bit disengenous in my original note. I actually had made a
change to my system before I loaded KDE. I changed my server name from
localhost to teesmachine. The only problem was I didn't propogate the
changes to /etc/hosts and /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf, where the
ServerName directive needs to get updated to point to teesmachine.

Once I made the appropiate changes Apache was able to resolve teesmachine

and 127.0.0.1

Moral of the story: Check system thoroughly after making configuration
changes and before moving on to new system changes. It's much easier to
debug each change that way.

Subject: routing via portnr
Date: Sat, 13 Feb 1999 21:24:09 +0100

Hello!
I hope that i am not OT.
I have a simple question:
can linux route a tcp/ip via the port ?
I neet an solution because i ve got the following problem:
I have on tcp/ip address lets say 192.168.10.10
and i have 2 comps with 2 different services.
let me say serv1 has got www on port 80
and serv 2 has got ftp on port 21
and of cause one linuxbox ;)
the problem is that it is not possible to have both
services on one simple comp. Also it is not possible to have more
than one tcp/ip address. Why i cant run both services on one comp
and why i haven t got 2 ip is to long for thes posting :-) And the services
are only
for explaining...
So i thougt that i can make one linuxbox, with 3 ethernetcards
one for serv1, one for serv2 and one for the ip in the world...
The only different for routing is the coming portnr.
so if i have a get of 192.168.10.10:21 the box routes to card2 (serv2), gets
the service and give it back with the anweraddress 192.168.10.10:21
if a packet comes with the address 192.168.10.10:80
linux should route it to
the card1 (serv1) and send the service back with the answeradress
168.192.10.10.:80
I hope thats explain my question.
Of cause i need the ip masquarading for linux to because
i shoult seems like one comp :-) for <the world> witch is in fact an
intranet.
Hope one of you can help me. THanks a lot !
