Subject: PPP and sybase listener
Date: Wed, 17 Feb 1999 03:12:29 GMT

Thanks guys for your quick response. The problem seams to be in the ASE
SYBASE service listener (which sybase unfortunately does not support
in the linux world). When I start the sybase application, and I'm
on the local machine I can telnet to the sybase port 7100 on
mikesrh.myhost.com (which is 127.0.0.1/7100). If I do a netstat,
you see:

[root@mikesrh install]# netstat Active Internet connections (w/o servers)
Proto Recv-Q Send-Q Local Address Foreign Address State tcp 0 0
localhost.locald:listen localhost.localdom:7100 ESTABLISHED tcp  0  0
localhost.localdom:7100 localhost.locald:listen ESTABLISHED udp  0  0
localhost.locald:domain *:* udp  0  0 localhost.lo:netbios-ns *:* udp  0  0
localhost.l:netbios-dgm *:*

Looks pretty normal. But if I try to telnet to port 7100 from a windoze
client over ppp (which is setup with a server port 192.168.1.5),
I get 'Connection refused' like theres no sybase service running on that port.

I did check /etc/hosts.allow and /etc/hosts.deny and it's just a string of '#'
(nothing to worry about there).

I also created a simple listening program (below) to run on the same 7100 port
and I was able to telnet from windoze over the ppp link to this
program on port 7100 (I shut down the sybase server obviously).

#define LISTEN_PORT  7100
listenSocket = socket( AF_INET, SOCK_STREAM, 0);
listenAddr.sin_family = AF_INET;
listenAddr.sin_addr.s_addr = INADDR_ANY;
localPort = LISTEN_PORT;
listenAddr.sin_port = htons(localPort);
scktaddr = (struct sockaddr *)&listenAddr;
scktaddr_len = sizeof(listenAddr);
bind( listenSocket, scktaddr, scktaddr_len );
listen(listenSocket, 1);
sock = accept( listenSocket, 0, 0 );
bytes_rcvd = recv( sock, buf, 1024, 0 );
printf( "Rcv: %s\n", buf );

If I try to start the ASE sybase server while my test listener program
is running, I get...

19:55:27.66 kernel network name mikesrh.myhost.com, type ether, port 7100
19:55:27.67 kernel ninit: bind, Address already in use
19:55:27.67 kernel ninit: All master network listeners have failed. Shutting
down.
19:55:27.67 kernel  ueshutdown: exiting

as I would expect. So, my questions are, can you configure a listener that
routes only to the local machine? I looked at the setsockopt() and did'nt see
anything that would (except maybe SO_DONTROUTE, but I doubt it). Why do you
think a huge application would do something like this? Security?
What if this was on a network, would it work or is just a PPP thing?

Thanks again for your help.

Yes. Please read the relevant documentation in
/usr/src/linux/Documentation/isdn . At the very least, you'll need a
getty listening to the port. See "man mgetty" .

It's a chips and technologies 65554. I found this out by going to www.tais.com
and clicking on intuitive looking places. I ended up at
http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/Toshiba.woa/-/SSDetailedSpecs.wo?productTypeId=1&productFamilyId=6&productSeriesId=68

I have a Toshiba 435CDS and set it up easily. Slightly different chip set so I
don't know if it means anything. Good luck.

Are you using IP Masquerading for your gateway? If you haven't configured
for ICMP masquerading, then pings will not make it through. Though this
doesn't explain being able to ping 24.0.0.0 hosts, unless you only have one
NIC in your gateway host and it's on a hub with all the rest as well as the
cable modem.

Hi

Their is a driver for this card. But you have to say insmod tlan after the
installation is complete. Then configure your network card by executing the
command netconf.

If you have any other problems mail me at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

It's probably better to edit /etc/inetd.conf instead since it is not
intended to carry canonical definitions (which /etc/services is).

Duplicate the line that starts with 'telnet' and change the first instance
of 'telnet' to 'http'. Then just 'killall -HUP inetd' and you're golden.

If your system uses PAM, you can just configure it to use the NT-style
password for everything. Presto, no more sync problems.

An awful lot of people. Combining hand-coded HTML with a server-side
scripting tool like PHP gives you a fabulous mix of speed, flexibility,
versatility, and control. No mamby-pamby web fingerpaint tool comes anywhere
close.

I do not think many people code their pages one by one, but the best web
authors certainly do pick each and every HTML tag before letting their
custom tools go to work.

Hello, fellow linux hackers.
I'm currently looking for work, that involves linux/unix programming, but
can find none. All jobs here require degree and /or 5-10 paid work
experience. I am a little upset now, because local authorities changing
law locally to allow programmer to work for more hours, but I couldn't
find a single job. Would the problem be:
1. Bad resume
2. looking in the worng places
3. too dumb
I am 20 and abviously have no degree, nor any paid work experience.
I finished high school, I know linux/w95 well as well as C++, perl, Java,
Pascal, sh, bash. I know how to setup any kind of software. Able to
troubleshoot any software conflict. Currently I am working on a electronic
sales system.
Here in Victoria, BC. Canada, they are changing laws so that high tech
employees can work more, but I see no sign of shortage of computer
programmers. I applied at ~ 20 local places 2 interviews, one of them, was
promising, but no can do. It seems like many employers are arrogant.
I went to dice.com and hotjobs.com and they had few jobs, but most in the
states or other side of Canda(toronto). Most of them required degree or
large work experience periods. Should I even bother to apply?
What tactics should I use?
I do not know NT, but know Win32 programming. NT is way too expensive for
me, but I am willing to learn. Actually that where I concentrated my
efforts, to learn how to learn quickly...
So would you think that I should earn my money for education in Macs or
subway, or should I try harder? I am willing to move, but would company
pay for my relocation? I have no idea of how and where to look for
high-tech jobs. I wonder if you can give me any hints , like which way
should I direct my energy...
I posted to this group because most people here, may be working with linux
for a job.
Thank you for your time.

I haven't tried this but I can't think of any reason why it
wouldn't work.  Go to
"Edit...Preferences...Advanced...Cache...Cache folder" and
set it to point to the same directory for all your users.
Make sure this is a directory with permissions set so that
all users can access it.

Ow dude, that's gotta hurt. Is that the right margin with the paper turned
landscape or portrait? Doesn't matter, forget I asked.

Perhaps the default margin settings need tweaking. Try this:

You should have a postscript file called "align.ps" in the directory with
all the other *.ps files that come with ghostscript.
Pass it through ghostscript on its way to your printer. Something like

gs -sDEVICE=laserjet -sOutputFile='|lpr -Plp' align.ps

or whatever you've been using to print so far.

This will (should) print out a page with one vertical and one horizontal
line, and some instructions on how to use the line measurements to correct
margin settings for the device/printer combo you are using.

Your printer wouldn't happen to be hanging off a Windows9X box would it? I
have a Epson Stylus that is on a Win machine. I print from my Mac to Linux
which then passes it off to Windows. I started getting all sorts of bizarre
problems (including Windows memory problems, stalling, and a single page
printing in pieces across several pieces of paper). Restarting Windows
seemed to fix these problems. (Imagine what problems I could fix if I just
threw the damn thing out the window).

All,

Does anyone have experience getting X-Windows to work while using NAT ?

I'm using an Ascend PipeLine 50 ISDN router and have defined a "Def Server"
under NAT which points to the LINUX box. Whenever I attempt remote display
an xterm, I use the IP address of the Ascend and it should pass the traffic
to the "Default Server". The remote end just times out. If anyone has
used NAT with X I'd appreciate hearing from you.

Not complicated at all.

Cable -> eth0 -> linux -> eth1 -> hub -> everything else

In the long run you will be very happy you did it this way. Better
performance, better security, no harassment from the cable company.

I have... but I use a linux masquerading firewall and ipportfw to forward
port 6000 to the one internal linux box that I want to connect to with X.
