If you are using Slackware, look at /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1 and copy the
'/sbin/ifconfig' statement, substituting the correct information for your
other network interface(s). If you are not running Slackware, you will need
to find that 'ifconfig' statement on your own. I don't know where it will
be but probably in /etc or some subdirectory under /etc. Try '"grep
ifconfig * " to see if you can find it.

Hi.
I'm trying to configure IPX on my RH6 2.2.11 box and have some
very weird problem - after compiling kernel with IPX & NCP
support (which is all that I need), when I try to load ipx.o
modules I get the following errors:
[root@deus Documentation]# modprobe ipx
/lib/modules/2.2.11/misc/ipx.o: unresolved symbol make_EII_client
/lib/modules/2.2.11/misc/ipx.o: unresolved symbol make_8023_client
/lib/modules/2.2.11/misc/ipx.o: unresolved symbol destroy_8023_client
/lib/modules/2.2.11/misc/ipx.o: unresolved symbol destroy_EII_client
Any idea what's wrong ???

Hi.
I want in our Intranet to use Netmeeting.
In Microsoft architecture, Netmeeting use an LDAP service called ILS
(Internet Locator Service) to find all peaple connected actually to the
Network.
But my server is a Linux server and I want to know if I can find a service
like "ILS" running on LINUX.
Can someone give me a good site where I can find softwares to build an
Intranet with LINUX. I want services running on LINUX but with MS Windows NT
Workstation for the clients (Word,Outlook,Netmeeting,IE4 or Netscape)
Can some tell me if is there a good Mail server on LINUX that give a good
integration with MS OUTLOOK for the client side. (Not MS Outlook Express).
Many thanks in advance.

Subject: DNS caching only name server
Date: Wed, 18 Aug 1999 13:55:47 +0100
Hi all,
I have a small network of MS machines behind a Linux 2.2.9 firewall
machine. I am using ipchains with masq. and everythings works great. I
would however like the firewall machine to act as a DNS caching only
name server. The DNS Howto from the LDP is very helpful, but I have run
into a problem.
According to the HOWTO, Section 3, the following line in
/etc/named.conf.:
//query-source port 53;
should be uncommented if I am using a firewall.
Section 8 Questions and Answers No.2 "How to use DNS from inside a
firewall?"
Says: A hint: forward only;, You will probably also need
"query-source port 53;"
inside the ''options'' part of named.conf file as suggested in the
example caching section.
Now, I am guessing that I need to add a rule in my ipchains file:
firewall.rc to allow forwarding of the DNS queries to port 53. Is this
correct? If so, what syntax would you recommend?
I am guessing the following:
/sbin/ipchains -A forward -p all -j ACCEPT -s $local_ip -d any/0
But this does not seem to work. Any help you could offer would be
appreciated.
Marty.

I've heard of Netscape growing before, but what is it trying to do

reach its hosts over and over? I know it tickles home.netscape.com and

Maybe I should mail this to netscape, but would they care.. :)

Don't really understand what you're trying to do but anyway.....there's an
excelent IP tunneling program called FreeS/WAN. Just make a query on it in

This is a documented problem on RH's errata page. You need to replace
the package "pump" with the update RH released. Pump sort of takes over
what DHCPCd does. There shouldn't be a need to replace DHCPCd directly.

i.e.

I get

I get a similar message if I try to use ftp, BUT if I use ftp via a command
prompt session, i.e. by first typing

everything works fine, but only once. If I close the connection and try to
open it again I get the getaddrinfo message again. Can anybody help?

This is one of my pet peeves, keeping the time correct, that is. I have
this RedHat box here and my time servers are Solaris 2.5.1 and 2.6.
Run 'date' and see how far off you are. If you're over a certain amount
of time off, you'll get a received date of 2036 for the year. ntpdate
-d time-b.nist.gov is the command I usually use to see what's going on
as you get the output without setting the time. Try this series as root
killall xntpd
rm /etc/ntp/drift
ntpdate -d time-b.nist.gov
(if that doesn't give you an error, then)
ntpdate time-b.nist.gov
/etc/rc.d/rc3.d/S55xntpd
If the ntpdate does give you an error, then you need to rsh to your time
server (the SUN box) and 'date' on it and 'date' on your computer and
reset your time to close to the server's. If you're within a minute or
two, it'll pick up with an ntpdate <server>.

Seems ipchains is not installed here on this RedHat 6 system. I don't
see it in /sbin and whereis ipchains returns nothing.
So I (1) install the ipchains.rpm and (2) recompile the kernel for
support, is that correct?
Would you recommend I use the kernel update rpms as explained in the
RedHat kernal upgrade HOWto, or should I do an actual recompile
(haven't done it before!)

Hello,
I've just installed a network with 3 computers connected behind a
firewall ( ipfwadm)
The firewall computer have 2 ethetnet devices (eth0 DHCP and eth1 local
IP).
The kernel is 2.0.37 compiled with all firewall options set to 'yes'.
For the moment the policies of the three chains in out and forwards are
'accept' and i have not create any rules. ( so it's open :o) )
the only rules i have made are for the ipmasquerading :
/sbin/ipfwadm -F -p deny
/sbin/ipfwadm -F -a m -S 192.168.1.0/24 -D 0.0.0.0/0
Now all the computers are connected. But i have some problems for the
FTP connections , and for sending mails with attached files.
Someone have an idea ???
Thanks in advance.

Subject: Re: Can't get 2 NIC's to work - Me too!
Date: Fri, 20 Aug 1999 08:08:06 -0400
1) Be sure the card is compiled into the kernel
2) Add the line
append="ether=0,0,eth1"
to your /etc/lilo.conf file. This will make the kernel probe for a second
card (which it doesn't do by default)
3) If you use RedHat, making a copy of the
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0, renaming it ifcfg-eth1, and
editing it to reflect the IP, subnet, etc and you will get up and running
quickly.
4) The problem may also simply be the PC/NIC combination. I have a HP
Vectra XM2 486/66 with 3 PCI and 2 ISA slots (1 shared) being used as a
router/firewall. I originally tried using a 3COM905x 10/100 for the
internal portion of my LAN, and a 3COM509B 10Mb for the external interface.
I'm relatively experienced at this and I still could NOT get both f#@kin'
cards recognized by RedHat6.0. After replacing the 3COM905 with a D-Link
500TX (tulip), and recompiling the kernel with support for it, everything
worked fine. If you are still having problems, and have another NIC, give
it a shot before trying anything more.
I have previously used the 3COM905/509 NIC combo in at least 6 other PCs
without problems, but in all cases, I've found the 3com cards to be
overpriced and show poor performance compared with much cheaper NICs such as
D-Link. In fact, this proves to be true in Linux, Win98, & WinNT. Just my
2 cents.

My uneducated guess:
Normally, a 3c509 uses Plug-and-Play. You can:
a. turn PnP off with a DOS-utility to be found at 3Com's website.
Instruct Windows 95 to use the IRQ and IO-Port you assigned (System panel).
b. use isapnp under Linux.
Also, it is possible but unlikely (since it works in Win'95) that the
card is setup for the wrong media: coax instead of UTP.
You can change media with the DOS-utility.

Why is that a problem? This is normal operation for many ISPs.
Jus make sure that you use the defaultroute option for pppd, and that you do not some
other default route set up.

I have installed IP Masquerading on my Linuxserver and I can now surf the
net via my Windows 98 computer. But how do I do to get the connection to
disconnect now when I don't have the ability to disconnect from Windows.
Earlier I could dosconnect from my modemicon i systray. Is there any way to
automatic disconnect when I close my browser och something?

hi,
The default setting of the ipfwadm chains (in,out, & forward) policy is
'accept'. so by default , this port are opened for TCP & UDP protocols. Make
sure that you have not any rules in these chains that can refuse it , using the
commands ipfwadm -I -l ; ipfwadm -F -l ; ipfwadm -O -l.
The matter is that ipfwadm is not a proxy server but just an IP Filter. So when
a computer in your local network establish a connection. The packets are just
forwarded by the firewall but the connection request come from the computer .
If you need to use the firewall IP for the connections requests install a proxy
server or use ip masquerading.
Hope this can help
Pablo.

I'm trying to get a machine with RedHat-6.0 to work with the 3Com
EtherLink PCI Combo NIC 3C900B Cyclone network card.
The card work in Windog NT, and I have disabled the PNP OS in the
BIOS, but I cannot get the card to work in Linux.
I would very much like to learn what to do to make it work, so if
anybody has this card and it's working please tell me what you had to
do.
Thanks in advance

Are you using caldera open linux? COL2.2 has glibc2.1 (aka libc6.1 ?)
and COL1.3 have libc5. If you are using COL1.3, you can download the
glibc2.1 package from caldera ftp site in the COL2.2 distribution. But I
recommand you should not install it directly, but convert it to tgz and
install it manually on seperate directory and use LD_LIBRARY_PATH to let
the system know where the library locate. If you are not newbie, you
should know what I am talking about.
