This works fine by adding the proxy server IP address to the Advanced
section in the Netscape Preferences.

Ok, I'm having problems with pppd 2.3.8 under RedHat 6.0
Basically I'm getting the LCP: timeout sending Config-Request error.
However, this is occuring on all 3 of my different ISPs. I will
include the information for an attempt at connecting to MSN.
Here is a copy of my /var/log/messages file:

Ok, under all three of my different ISPs I get the LCP timeout error
message. Each ISP has a similar login screen as well. I have done
every alteration to /etc/ppp/options imagineable including changing
the amount of Config-Requests and the size of the restart. I have
called RH Tech Support and one of my ISPs tech support. I have
allready read through and followed
http://axion.physics.ubc.ca/ppp-linux.html#Types and read the
ppp-howto, the serial-howto and just about ever message excite could

Any help would be appreciated. If any additional information is
required please reply.

Not very clearly. I'm guessing you have a machine with the IP address
10.9.9.9, and when you enter http://10.9.9.9/page.html you want to see the
page you would have gotten if you'd entered http://www.dummy.net.
>Can you help me with this one?
You'll need to use an HTTP redirect. Configure your web server so that
when it receives a request for /page.html, it sends a redirect to
http://www.dummy.net. The details of how to do this depend on the web
server software you're running. The folks in
comp.infosystems.www.servers.unix would probably be able to help you with
this (make sure you identify the server software and version).

Subject: How to change hostname on RH5.2
Date: Wed, 26 May 1999 18:24:05 -0400
I tried using linuxconf to change my hostname from localhost.localdomain to
something more meaningful and here is what happened :
/etc/HOSTNAME is now an empty file (ie it contains nothing)
/etc/hosts contains just one entry :
127.0.0.1 localhost localhost.localdomain
and /etc/sysconfig/network looks like :
NETWORKING=yes
FORWARD_IPV4="no"
HOSTNAME="enigma"
GATEWAY=""
GATEWAYDEV=""
I changed the hostname to enigma. Xterms display the new hostname
fine, and the correct hostname is displayed at both console login screens
and at the XDM screen. But I know that the /etc/HOSTNAME file
should not be empty. And the /etc/hosts file should also contain an
entry to reflect the new hostname.
/etc/HOSTNAME should probably contain just enigma, right ?
But what is the correct entry for the /etc/hosts file ?
Thanks for any info.
PS : I am using RedHat Linux 5.2 w/ kernel 2.0.36.

Subject: DHCP/DNS Problem w RH5.2; Linux Can't Ping Itself
Date: Thu, 27 May 1999 03:45:02 GMT
Folks,
I just recently installed RedHat v5.2 on a PC at work. We use (I
believe) a Windows NT network for PC servers (using 10baseT), and we
also have some Sun Sparc stations on the network. Our network assigns
PCs using DHCP.
When I have the Linux box request an IP address, it works fine, with
the following exception:
I have the Linux box named mylinux.mydomain.com (names have been
changed to protect the innocent). My NT computer is named
mynt.mydomain.com. We also have a Sun Sparc Station, called
mysparc.mydomain.com.
I can get to most systems using hostnames from the linux box (mylinux)
(i.e. I can get to the Internet through our firewall, and I can go to
our intranet, using Netscape), so in this respect, it works great.
But some systems I have to use the IP address to gain access to them,
including the linux box I am creating.
I get the following when I ping all machines from
mylinux.mydomain.com:
Host Pinged Pinging w hostname Pinging w IP address
mylinux unknown host OK
mynt unknown host OK
mysparc OK OK
I get the following when I ping all machines from mynt.mydomain.com:
Host Pinged Pinging w hostname Pinging w IP address
mylinux Bad IP address OK
mynt OK OK
mysparc OK OK
I get the following when I ping all machines from
mysparc.mydomain.com:
Host Pinged Pinging w hostname Pinging w IP address
mylinux unknown host OK
mynt unknown host OK
mysparc OK OK
I have read the mini-howto on DHCP, and have tried the -r and -h
options at /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifup at the line containing
the dhcpcd command, with no luck.
I have also used mylinux and mylinux.mydomain.com for the hostname in
netcfg, with no change (which is correct? I notice if I only use
mylinux, samba services take forever to startup on bootup.)
I am a newbie at setting this up (last time I used Linux was around
'93-94, and was using Slackware), but this has really getting me
befuddled.
Do I have no control over this? Is it the network DHCP server's
fault? Does it need to sit a while before it figures out the names?
It acts as though the nameservers (which it does find and puts in
resolv.conf) do not put the name i gave the linux box into the DNS
database.
The machine, when it was a Win95 box, was able to be pinged from my
PC (mynt). I'm not sure about the sparc station.
Help!
Thanks in advance for any help.
Completely confused,

In the application. tcpserver, xinetd and g2s (super servers) support it, so

Me too ! :(
But, You are already connected.
Try :
ping 199.183.24.140 (www.redhat.com) . Did this work?
Then try :
ping www.redhat.com . Did this work? NO ?
Then add DNS IP addresses of the MindSping into /etc/resolv.conf :
(verify the domain and the correct IP addresses in your Win98)
search mindspring.com
nameserver 123.123.123.1
nameserver 123.123.123.2
Try again : ping www.redhat.com Did this work now?
Yes !? Then run netscape and "boa viagem" (good trip) !
I hope has helped this time.

You should be able to export each filesystem explicitly on the
server and mount them in their respective positions on the
client.

Hi,
Maybe it is a to honest approach, but this the way I believe it has
to be. I believe the support I had from the Iomega Linux users had some
impact to fix my problem with Iomega. When I called them back after
I sent my message all over the net, the technician knew I was the
Linux guy just as I mentioned my name :-).
Anyway I was at friend place and had the unit installed on his
machine running Dos. The technician had us do very simple test ---
nothing more then I had done under Linux. He immediately offered to
replace the unit. I am under the impression they want me to calm
down a bit...
Next time I am buying hardware for my computers, I will make sure
that the companies do not have that attitude toward Linux users.
They won't force me into an OS I do not want.
Thanks for your support,
Dominic.

yes, this is exactly my case.
a mounted file system in unix is transparent to the user. it should also
be transparent to network users you want to whom you wish to offer the
file system.
this is the way things worked prior to knfsd, and i was assuming it was
the point of the sun nfs emulation.
again, i find it interesting that /n/ahab/src works from ahab - if it's
not being short-circuited, it seems to me that the functionality is
there but being blocked by some sort of permission thing.
do you know how to get around this?
thanks for your reply.

That's the problem, no external pinging, only internal (192.168.1.0/24)
I've got a firewall but it's not setup to block this out. ????

I'm using Redhat 6.0 isn't ICMP masq enabled by default?
