You may need to add the pppd debug option and look for better clues in
the PPP negotiation messages in /var/log/debug or whereever RH sends
debug messages. This is configured in /etc/syslog.conf.
One thing that you can try, based on the messages you do post, is to
add the pppd option "asyncmap 0". The default asyncmap in ppp-2.2.0
is 0x0 but it's 0xffffffff in ppp-2.3.5 . This may cause problems with
ISPs that default to 0 when LCP negotiation finishes and one sign is
trouble in IPCP. There also could be something amiss with how the IP
addresses are negotiated and not related to the asyncmap setting.

In an attempt to get my RTL8029 ethernet card working, I added
the line '/sbin/modprobe ne io=0x6800' to /etc/rc.d/rc.modules.
Now, booting hangs at the 'NE*000 ethernet probe at 0x6800:'
line.
I tried booting into single user mode using 'linux single' at the
LILO prompt, but had the same problem. How can I boot to undo the
damage? Booting from floppy with 'mount root=/dev/hdb2' failed
also.

If you have access to another computer go to www.toms.net and gets his
distro. It will boot into memory then you mount your partition and fix
the damage. Take out the floppy and reboot. All better :-)

Good point, but I'd use Stevie Ray Vaughan for this comparison. He was
quite humble about his abilities. Eddie really need to do some practice

Instead of using 2 nics on the linux box you could get 1 nic and a hub;
might be a little easier to configure the ip routing. I don't have any data
for you on the speed loss; I don't think it would be very much of you have
decent RAM and aren't running X on the 486...

Ok all I ahve read the "thread from hell" on pci modems. Now if someone in
plain english could tell me if the Aceex internal PCI modem I bought is
going to work I would be happy. While this modem comes with a windows
driver, it also inplicitly states that it will work with win3.1 and dos. So
I took that as meaning its not a win modem or software type modem. It does
have jumpers even if I haven;t the froggiest idea how to set them.. (No
manual).
So I am cheap and I wanted to double my modem speed. Maybe I will pay for
it. Tell me if I blew my money.
Thanks again,

Don't ask me why this worked, but it did. After trying to load the ne.o
module with modprobe, I received some error messages that said the symbols
in my ne.o module did not match my kernel(?). Quite a mystery, since I
had neither upgraded my kernel nor modified the ne.o before my network
card became undetectable. Anyway, the message implied that the only way
to know if the ne.o module was corrupt was to reinstall it from, in my
case, CDROM.
It was quite a scary move, since to do so I had to remove the linux
binaries while my system was still running. I used LISA to do so. I then
reinstalled from the RPM on the CD and rebooted. Voila! Back in
business, and astounded that one can remove the kernel and several modules
while the system is running! Can NT do that?

ip address of the proxy server in the preferences in netscape. Because the
proxy server stops all of his requests. Any suggestions will be greatly

You can use Sambar-Proxy-Server for Windows for this purpose. It's free of
charge and has for configuration tasks a sophisticated web-interface (you
can setup and monitor your proxy from any computer on your LAN). It also can
forward mail and news. For further informations look at

After 3 months of trying, I finally got samba up and running between my
linux and win95 box.
Now i'm going to be greedy and ask a question --
Can I set up samba so that ANYBODY can log in with no (blank) password and
have super user access to the entire system? In other words, none of my
linux accounts have passwords and I'd like samba to have NO security.
I have no security issues since my cat is not a very good typist...
Thanks!

You can connect them together by using " cross over cable". If you don't
want to make it yourself, buy it. I saw it in many computer store.

Not just any cable. A "NULL MODEM" or "CROSS-OVER" cable is required if you
don't use a hub.
Else, those little electrons never get there.
You can make your own with a crimp kit, or buy one for about the same price as a
crimp tool and 100' of cable.

I just started a more detailed reply, examining your rules, but
halfway through, they looked ok *if* only the packet filter is trying
to access the Internet. With what hosts are you having problems? Is
all DNS traffic discarded by the packet filter or just that of the
hosts behind it? I don't see any forwarding rules in your setup, so I
don't know how any of your protected machines can access the Internet
at all. Or are you using proxies on the packet filter and have a DNS
server installed on it? Please specify your problem more closely.

You need to recompile your kernel, turning on support for experimental
and alpha drivers. Then, in networking options, enable ipautofw
support (along with all the other firewalling and masquerading
gimmicks). Compile and install the kernel and you should be set.

What are you talking about???
It was an example.. I didn't want to advertise her domain in the newsgroup!
She did tell me I could, so I didn't. I made up the domain blah.net as a
example... Her's is something totally different.
PS. sorry for all the posts... dejanews kept saying there was an error and
that they were busy at the the time and to hit reload. I followed there
instructions and looked later and there were lots of posts from me.
I still need some advise.

=BFSomebody know why connecting from one client with Win98 to a Linux
Server with Samba,
client can see shares, but it can't access then?
When double click on one shared (hd in example), Windows say (share not
found), but =
can see it in net explorer.
In registry of windows, I enabled text password.
Client, otherwise, can use bsd printer declared in samba.conf and can
access home directories.
Can someone help me?
Thank's in advance and regards from C=F3rdoba (Spain)

Thanks for the link, however, we are looking for something more like a Squid
application instead of a full blown fire-wall.
Any other suggestions?
Brian
