I am wanting to try linux and want to be able to leave my LAN intact. Is it
possible to use the internet sharing from win 98 from a linux box?
The setup now modem nic card windows 98se with internet sharing.
The linux box will have just a nic card.
I have the kids on this LAN also, so I don't want to screw around with the
dial up box for internet sharing.
Can this be done, or will I have to install a proxy program on the 98 box
with the modem?

The versions on Becker's site is much newer and is more "enhanced" than the
one on the Netgear disk, so that'd be your best bet..

I've got a firewall running running with kernel 2.2.11 and everything is
working fine, but I get these annoying errors on the console screen.
During boot, I get the message SIOCADDRT: network is unreachable. This
occurs immediately after the dns prefix search 'searching
.owml.md.home.com'. Then on the logon screen appears 'eth1: tx
interrupt but no status' over and over again.
I have eth0 as my external network card and the eth1 as the internal
card, but I can't seem to find any problems with the routes.
my routing table is set up as:

and my hosts file has both my address linked to their hostnames with the
external entry first followed by the internal and then the loopback.
Both network cards are compiled into the kernel and configured with
lilo's append. Everying on the inside of the network and the firewall
works fine, except for these error messages that are filling up my logs.

I can not get my printer (HP DJ690) to print.
I set up the /etc/printcap file and all the permissions I also set up
the spool file and went through the printing howto. THe first time I
tried to print, it actually did somthing, it was "staircasing" though,
so i set up a filter file and changed the /etc/printcap accordingly, now
it doesn't do anything. when i try and print the hard drive does stuff,
but no go on the printing. When I use the lpc and type status I get a
message saying
queing is enabled
printing is enabled
no entries
no daemon present
those may not be the exact words but it's somthing like that. Can
anyone help me?
my computer has no controll panel set up, (HD too small)

I have a company that uses RH 6.0 for their E-mail server and NT for
their file and print services. As much as I would love to get rid of
the NT, it doesn't look like an option. My question is, Is there any
way to sync up user accounts and passwords betweent the two OS's. Right
now I have set all of the users shells on the linux box to be
/usr/bin/passwd and made a shortcut to telnet into the box to change
it. If it was the same as their NT password, this would be a lot less
confusing for them.

light as to why this is happening and how I can correct it? Ifconfig
reports the pointopoint address as 14.146.206.129????? The default route is
set to 14.146.206.129 as well. I can't ping either of the DNS servers setup
correctly in resolv.conf.

you could try this to your input chains
accept tcp port 80 destination to your server then
redirect tcp port 80 to port 3128 destination 0/0 .
so all tcp packets to port 80 going to outside your server will be
redirected to squid listening at port 3128.
anyway what's your ipchains command?
for squid.conf you have to enabled accel to virtual server

Are you using DHCP? You might need to delete /etc/dhcpd.leases and (re)start

Do you get the "not_bound" error only on booting your machine,
where ypbind is started ?
Try starting it manually, after the boot.
If that works, maybe you have the same problem we had.
"Ypbind" is started to early on boot.
Solution : move /etc/rc.d/rc3.d/S13ypbind to
/etc/rc.d/rc3.d/S70ypbind

In most environments it doesn't seem to matter for 10Mbps, hence the
"flat" soft cable you get for that application. I have run 20 metres of
this in office environments without trouble. It's no good for 100-BaseTX
or ATM though - you need the noise immunity that twisted pair affords.

It still doesn't excuse it - they caould have used 1-2 and 8-7 as the
two ethernet pairs, hence allowing flipover to make crossover cables
with the flat or twisted-pair-ribbon type cable, leaving the centre two
(or four) pins free for US-style RJ11 phone cabling.
Hindsight is a powerful tool, and no doubt they had some other weird
standard which they were trying to accomodate which now seems deeply
irrelevant.

That error message is NT code speak for - "The remote server is not
using network encryption for exchange of the password, and I'm not
allowed to send the password in the clear." This is the default
behaviour of NT4 SP3 and upwards. There is a full explanation in the
Samba documentation.
You have a couple of options:
1. If your network is private or behind a firewall that blocks SMB
traffic, it's pretty safe to enable plain passwords in NT (or at least,
it doesn't make its already pitiful security any worse :-) There is a
file NT4_PlainPassword.reg supplied with the Samba docs, copy it to the
NT machine and double click.
2. You can tell Samba to use encryption. This can cause a few headaches,
most notably synchronisation of the encrypted NT password with the
encrypted Unix/Linux one.
This is a well known issue with Samba. As always, it's a good idea to
read the docs before posting.
