Example ifconfig output:

What does NOTRAILERS mean? I can't find any reference to it in the

Thank you.

You didn't say what user and group owners of /dev/ttyS1 are. On my
Debian, they are root and dialout, respectively. So add your username
under "dialout" group in /etc/group (editing it by hand, or using
some available script, like adduser), and next time you log in
you'll be able to access it. This is supposed to work this way, it
is a security feature.

i have a linux box that operates on a windows network (95 and nt) using
samba. it's also a web/mail/ftp server behind our firewall. with redhat 5.2
everything was working fine, but since upgrading to 6.0 i'm have some very
strange problems. everything works fine most of the time but occasionally the
networking layer completely freaks out. pinging a machine on the lan has
returns times like 2 ms, 1500 ms, 460 ms, 7 ms - all over the place.
restarting the network fixes it, until it freaks out again. i cannot find
anything that is logged anywhere at the time, nor can i find any repeatable
behavior that will cause the problem. as of now i'm quite stumped. thanks for

This lets you only access your vfat partitions on a dual boot system, a
situation where Samba is useless. The question was about accessing
windows files on other machines.

I just installed two Linksys EtherFast cards, one in Win98, and the other in
my Dell running RH 5.2 I did a complete re-install of linux, and went
through the setup, and chose the tulip driver. I let Windows install the
drivers for the card. I put 10.0.2.15 and "lacalena.dell.linux" in
c:\windows\hosts.
But I can't ping, telnet, etc from W98 into the linux server. Any idea what
step I have missed? Below are output from ifconfig and route if there are
any clues there.
Thanks for any clues.

It would seem to me that you do not have your resolv.conf file set up
correctly. Look in /etc/resolv.conf and you should have the following
lines:
search (domain name) ex. domain.name
nameserver (ip address of your ISP) ex. 192.168.0.1
This should take care of your problem :)

Check out the DNS documentation. In the configuration files you specify
how long an entry is valid. This information gets communicated to
requesters and determines how long an entry may be cached.

I'm trying to configure SAMBA to work only on the inside of my IP
Masqueraded network. I've been following the diagnosis text file from
the samba.org mirrors. I'm running Debian potato, with Samba 2.0.4
I've gotten up to test 4, which is where I'm stuck. When I do
nmblookup -B wall __SAMBA__
I get
Sending queries to 127.0.0.1
name_query failed to find name __SAMBA__
If I do:
nmblookup -B 192.168.0.1 __SAMBA__ (192.168.0.1 is wall's IP address)
I get
192.168.0.1 __SAMBA__<00>
I can use smbclient to interact with samba from another Linux box.
I can see the samba server from an NT box, but I can't mount any shares.
Can someone tell me where to look for my mistake?
Thanks,
Ted Leung

Hello,
I am some what new to linux, but I have read the verious related
how-to's and spent hours trying to get it to work, with no luck.
Ok, here is the discription of the linux box.
Runing RH6.0, was installed as "custum" and "everything" installed.
It has a modem in it that is used for my internet conection, ppp0
and I am dynamicaly asigned an ip# when I connect.
It also has an ethernet card (eth0) (ip# 192.168.1.1), that is
connected to my privet network.
Also, ip forwarding is enabled on linux box.
Here is my 2nd, computer, conected to my privet network.
This is runing windows 3.11 with the MS tcp/ip-32.
It is set as ip# 192.168.1.2 and gateway is set
as 192.168.1.1
Ok, this is what I can do:
ping the windows box from linux, no problem.
ping the linux box from windows, no problem
I can also ping the ppp0 ip# from the windows box,
That being 12.17.3.79 in the below example.
I can ping anything on the privet network or the
internet with the linux box.
What I can't do:
I can not ping anything passed the ppp0 ip#, (12.17.3.79),
from the windows box.
I can not ping the ppp0 P-t-P address, (12.17.3.20),
from the windows box.
Ok, here is my ifconfig and my route:
# ifconfig

Can some one tell me why I can't get to the internet with my

What command lines do I want to type in to fix the problem ?
Could the problem be that the defult gateway is automaticaly set to
the P-t-P ip# 12.17.3.20 and not the asigned ip# 12.17.3.79 ?
if so, how would I fix this ?
I sure hope some one knows the answer, becase I don't.

Hello Folks,
I've recently upgraded my Redhat 5.1 to 6 and have noticed that I am now
unable to ftp to my server. It establishes a connection for a second (or
tries to do so) but then reports that the service is unavailable. A closer
inspection shows that the correct line is 'uncommented' in inetd.conf but it
refers to in.ftpd ... however, this file is missing.
My question is 'how can I 'install / recover' my in.ftpd file and get my ftp
server working?' Since I am relatively new to LiNUX admin, I'm not sure if
this is something which is part of a module, a 'package' or what. Any help
would be appreciated.
Cheers,

Subject: multiple forwards etc
Date: Sat, 29 May 1999 20:07:42 GMT
hi,
this is probably blindingly obvious, but I can't work it out.
We have two dial-up ISP links on our network, one to Demon and one to
screaming.net. Obviously, the screaming.net is our preference during
the weekends etc. However, the two dial-up computers are different due
to physical location of the phone lines.
Currently we have one PC which handles DNS caches, SAMBA 2.1.0-prealpha
NTDOM and some others and is the gateway for the network.
While this machine could dial up Demon, we would prefer it didn't. It
definately cannot dial screaming.net. My problem is how to pursuade the
gateway to re-gateway all outgoing packets to the correct dial-up
gateway.
I can handle the masquarading, changing the DNS forwarding servers, and
most of the rest.
My current plan is to run masq on which ever box is the current dial-up
machine. The problem is how to pursuade the gateway that it should pass
all of them to the gateway while propogating the local ones out of the
lan.
Thanks

here are a few ideas for you.
first off, make sure you have the masquerading stuff compiled into the kernel
and that you have the kernel modules initialized when you boot either with
kerneld, modprobe, or insmod.
second, check out my firewall script. it might help you a lot with this
problem.
