For all but one of the newgroups listed, the obvious
answer is to look to the sources.
If I suspect, say, Netscape of sending information
I don't want published it's a simple matter to
check the code and see if it's using some
mysterious Intel-specific instructions.
Of course, the fact that I /can/ do this means
I really don't have to, 'cos I trust a near
infinite number of better-qualified trainspotters
to have done it already.
Ah - the security of open source software.

Hmmm.
You will need a Ethernet card for your Mac (obviously) and Netatalk for
Linux.
This will allow you to mount shared directories and printers from Linux to
use on your Mac.
If you want to share printers though you will also need Ghostscript on
Linux to translate the Mac's Poscript output.
Search for Netatalk on Altavista or some other search engine, there are
some HOWTOs out there.

I have an older p166 with RH 5.2
Installed are two nics ( 1 Netgear PCI and 1 3com 3c509 isa. ) Due to the
hardware configuration ( scsi, etc ) the netgear nic works like a champ but
the 3com will not activate. I have the 3com set on IO:210 IRQ 3. I know
this should conflict with the serial. But I have no modem and disabled at
the BIOS the serial ports.
This config works fine for Win95 Osr but not for linux. In RH I have setup the
card under the kernal tool and it appears under the network management tool.
However, I can not activate it, nor does it appear in the boot messages.
Please any suggestions. Is there some default in the RH kernel for serial
ports at IRQ 3/5 that is blocking the card? What else could I try, I have no
other available ports.
Worst case I will just put the proxy server under Win95 and scrubb
linux....which hurts to say, but hey I have to have this thing working!!!

If RH5.2 is like RH5.1, /usr/bin/netscape is a script that does several rpm
probes to see
what is installed, where it is, etc. I removed the (upto) 3 rpm calls. I also
added the
-no-about-splash so Netscape would display my default page instead of those
stupid
copyright notices when it loads.

table has looked something like this.

I have read from other posts that it is harmless, but I would like to

My apologies if this is an old question ... I have read countless
articles and books describing the topic of network numbering, but I am
now looking for the answer from "experience".
Can any one point out the drawbacks to assigning addresses from a class
A "non-routeable" block then subnetting later as needed.
example: (before subnetting)
Location 1: host1 10.0.1.1/255.0.0.0
host2 10.0.1.2/255.0.0.0
Location 2: host1 10.0.2.1/255.0.0.0
host2 10.0.2.2/255.0.0.0
example: (after subnetting)
Location 1: host1 10.0.1.1/255.255.0.0
host2 10.0.1.2/255.255.0.0
Location 2: host1 10.0.2.1/255.255.0.0
host2 10.0.2.2/255.255.0.0
The reasoning is that a site has numbers assigned that actually belong
to someone else. They need to be assigned "private" addresses. They
also have 5 geographic locations under 1 class "B" address block.
(routers are configured as bridges). I would like to change the numbers
first, then create/debug subnets.
Also, any suggestions as to the easiest way to renumber a network?
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi folks, I seem to be having a slight conceptual problem...
I'm trying to set up an ID that can ONLY be used locally. I've edited the
"usertty" file and put in lines to restrict the given ID to logging in ONLY
from tty1, but this doesn't seem to have any effect.
Any ideas? Is there another switch to throw?

Does anyone have a bit of info on a server made by McDonnell-Douglas for
ADP? It's a Max 8500 model 6000 series used to run a car dealership's in
house system. It was configured for about 40 ports using SCSI drives. It
has one hard disk and one tape drive. Yeah, it's probably 4+ years old
and is heavy as a bulldozer, but it might serve a purpose still. The
specific flavor of unix is unknown till I boot it. (gotta get a TV965 or
WT6 terminal first)

I believe there is at least one 3Com card which is supported.
You might want to try a plip connection (using the printer port), which

simpler. Note that I said could be :-)

You need first to set up your own private network, seperate from theirs.
You can do this with a seperate card, or by aliasing multiple IP
addresses to your one card. If you do that, you need to plug your cable
modem into your hub, and anyone on media one (or at least, a local
section of it) can become part of your private network - your next
door neighbor only has to set his IP address to the next available
one in your intranet.
Better would be to use two ethernet cards. They're cheap now...anywhere
from five to twenty dollars. Spend the money - it's worth not getting
blamed when the kid down the street hacks Microsoft with YOUR
masqueraded IP.
