I have a compaq deskpro 4000 (5166)with mandrake6 and the netelligent is
recognised during setup. But impossible to ping anybody else than the
localhost adress. I'm using BNC as a media, is it possible that the
problem is due to the fact I use BNC instead of UTP?
Is there some workaround in this case ?

Subject: /etc/hosts config question
Date: Tue, 24 Aug 1999 08:48:40 GMT
Hi all.
I have seen on some linux servers the etc/hosts file has few setups
for different hosts.
eg. 123.456.789.1 host.domain host
123.456.789.2 anotherhost (no domainname specified)
In my hosts file i have included after each hostname the domainname
followed bij the alias of the hosts.
(Like the first line in the example) All host (windows NT4.0)
including the Linux box are in the same domain.
Does it make any difference how i set up the hosts file?

Thanks for all the answers but I think you all have the wrong question in mind!
I do not even get a login when i telnet into my machine! It just times out!
So the security files isn't an issue yet!
I hope someone can answer this! I realy need it!
Thanks!

Actually, many systems will *not* send to A records, only MX records.

The IP address of the clients doesn't matter, the whole Windoze stuff
usually works using broadcasts. But to have a clean environment you
should use a "WINS" Server, that is some kind of Windows name service.
You can either use a NT box for this or the samba server ("wins proxy =
yes" and "wins support = yes"). On the clients you have to set the
"Primary WINS server", either by hand or by using DHCP (replace a.b.c.d
with the IP-Adress of your WINS-server):
subnet 192.168.1.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 {
range 192.168.1.180 192.168.1.199;
option subnet-mask 255.255.255.0;
option netbios-name-servers a.b.c.d;
option netbios-node-type 8;
}

Jochen

Subject: jammed network - NFS malfunctioning?
Date: Tue, 24 Aug 1999 09:24:43 +0200
Hello All
I'm experiencing a problem with my NFS-rooted (diskless) workstations.
When it works for couple of minutes it starts jamming my network. I
think its a nfs link that tries to exchange of some nfs packets leading
to some network traffic jam (network use statistics go crazy both on
server and client side).
I tried changing parameters:
* tried timeo,wsize,rsize,noatime options in client's fstab
* changed network cards on both client and server side (with 10 and
100 MBps speed)
* changed duplex options in card drivers
and no progress.
It doesn't seem to happen when my NFS rooted workstation does something
specific, even if left alone doing nothing but blinking login prompt it
starts jamming network after some time.
Most curious: the problem doesn't appear so often when people are gone
and my company LAN is not occupied so it most have something to do with
network load.
Please let me know if you got any suspicion for possible cure.
TIA
Bartek

But if your incomming chain rules are deny then (I think) it looks like
time out.
Thats why I asked for the output of "ipchains -L".

I mean (although I may not have said it quite like this) that I am going to use
it as an ip masquerading door to the net for my LAN, with a ppp connection to
my isp and an eth connection to the lan. At this stage only one eth device (cos
the other will be a modem). The modem is not installed yet and I am just
getting things going a step at a time. Therefore I want the eth to connect to
the lan and at least do a ping!! LOL.
]I will try your suggestions and let you know how it goes, thanks! :-)
PS would I get the same result if my 3 year old damaged the ethernet cable when
he tripped over it? needless to say I am unpopular at present for (1) buying
another computer for this little project and (2) laying cables all over the
home to connect it to the other computers at home (which are already an
issue!!). ah well......

Warp Server from IBM has a Dynamic DNS that does this. I haven't any

Date: Tue, 24 Aug 1999 08:44:36 GMT
This is a repost because i simple can't solve the problem and i realy
need help with this one!
I have a problem regarding telnet. When i try to telnet from the outside
world
into my server I get a time out and that's it no login or access denied!
Tough
if I telnet from the inside it works fine!
Here is my setup:
486 firewall with 2 nic's (eth0 and eth1)
DHCPd with a cable modem on eth0 (out.side.ip.number)
eth2 (192.168.0.1) is connected to a hub providing internet to my
internal
network
Now when I telnet to the firewall's "out.side.ip.adress" from e.g.
192.168.0.4 no problem! Telnetting on the firewall machine to itself
works fine to. Now when I try to telnet form "some.where.out.there" to
my linuxbox I get a time out and nothing more, though ftp and http work
fine from anywhere!! my /etc/host.allow says ALL:ALL
and /etc/host.deny are empty!
Can somebody explain to me how I can configure my box so that I can
telnet into it from anywhere on the planet?
I tried fixing it for 2 days an gave up on it (shouldn't but no more
time)
I hope it is a simple fix :)
Thanks!

This is a sendmail config problem not a Linux Networking problem and you
would probably get a better answer from the folks in a sendmail group.
What you need to do is setup the
/etc/mail/LocalIP
/etc/mail/relay_allow
/etc/mail/RelayTo
files. If you want more info, then go to www.sendmail.org and look in
the HOWTOs

I've mounted a share from a NT-server, but all the files have wrong

Running 2.0.5a client.
Anyone know how to get rid of the prob?

Wir haben hier am Institut einen Linux Rechner (SuSE 6.1) mit NIS und NFS
installiert. Alle Benutzer die mit m anfangen werden in der Passwortdatei
/etc/passwd mit der Zeile
+@musers::::::
importiert. In der /etc/group steht die Zeile
+:::

Okay, this might not be the correct ng for this post, but here goes
:) I am trying to set up a virtual host on my Linux box so that I can
test my website before uploading to a server. I want to mirror it
exactly as it is found on the server, of course :)
I have read through the how-to's and configure httpd.conf according to
the how-to. The problem is that when I try to access the virtual site I
get a _cannot access startfile http://192.168.0.2_ error.
I have set up a directory /home/webvir for this purpose and in the
httpd.conf file there is a line with _DirectoryRoot /home/webvir_. In
this directory, there is already an index.html file.
Does anyone have an idea about what I may have done incorrectly here?
Any help would be greatly appreciated :)
Thx, in advance!

Thanks again.
I did check those things, it all seemed ok in /etc/sysconfig/network, but i
couldn't make head nor tail of the scripts in
